My nominee for best wargame of all time would probably have to be Steel Panthers which has been on my hard drive in one form or another longer than any other wargame i've ever played.

Others i'd list would be:

Carrier Force
War in Russia (8bit) /Second Front
USAAF
Silent Service II
Pacific War
UV/WitP
Combat Mission
Warship/Battlecruiser

I really enjoyed PTO II on my sega saturn despite some of the silly rules. Another old all time favorite would be Sea Battle for the Intellivision. But WitP, WPO and CoG have to be my current favorites.
It doesn't make any sense, Admiral. Were we better than the Japanese or just luckier?

HOI2 and WitP are in a dead heat for best PC game ever, IMO.

The Campaign Series runs a close second.

Does anyone remember the old "Hunt for Red October" sub simulator, from the 286/386 days? Me and a couple of buddies had an INCREDIBLY fun time with that one. One of us would sit at the keyboard with the overlay and be the 'XO', while the other would watch the screen and be the 'CO' calling out orders. What a blast! And it never needed a patch! [8D]

Ohhh so many great games...

WITP for me is best I love it !!

But in terms of oldies that I loved to play

RT Smiths Desert Rats, Arnhem and even Operation Vulcan [:D][:D] for the Spectrum 48k these were my 1st wargames and are fondly remembered for that reason.

Also worthy of mention
RTW and MTW are good, Civ is good, I loved Master of Orion 2 (but hated 3)
Pacwar was highty addictive as was WIR ;)

p.s. I bought AH's 3rd Reich and hated it so many compromises to make an AI work.

I would have liked an Advanced 3rd Reich/ Rising Sun global game designed for Multiplayer sod the AI ;)

Always enjoyed SPIs Sniper. Was particularly good when we had 2 boards, a referee, and could play blind.

In the ancient days (pre-internet) i had a good friend who set up a futuristic Sniper scenario set in a small town, with all turns submitted on his BBS ("The WordWorks").

In the future, the Felkies and Codos had agreed to limit themselves to mid-late 20th century weapons. The Felkies and Codos fought over that town a LOT (Lokivari, iirc). The last scenario was me vs. all comers (not sure why i agreed to this last one, but it was my friend's idea... [&:][X(])

Grigsby's Pacific War would have to be no 1 in my book. Played it for years, then forgot about it. Found Matrix games and the upgraded free versions and started playing it again while waiting for UV.

Combat Mission is still great-still play it all the time.

Medieval Total War-Viking Invasion is still on my hard drive and I am playing the Turks now.

Just like girlfriends, the best is always the first. Got my new Leading Edge PC about 20 years ago ($1,900!) My first computer game was Epyx's "Sub Battle" Just 2D black silouettes on a green screen, but a great game. That was the beginning of my wife's complaining about me spending too much time on the computer. Has not stopped in 20 years.

I have to admit I never played PacWar after seeing my "autoconvoys" sailing into their doom. Pissed me off. Can't believe I stuck with this after the same thing.[8|]

Perhaps this is why I'm such a critic. I hated the effing game (pacWar).[X(]

Interesting, I never used auto-convoy. Played the game to death though. Just goes to show how different things turn people off. I have not played any WITP campaigns. I like the smaller scenarios. Don't even mess with auto-convoy.

RTW would be on my list but I can't get it to stop crashing. Spent hours tweaking my computer but it still crashes.

Very poorly supported by the game company as well. Two patches and that was it. No more and none to come.

If not for the excellent modding community, it would be a total dog.

1) Harpoon, I, II and III, but it´s II that takes it to the top
2) Tanks and the TOAW series, the diversity and flexibility to create new stuff overrules some of the flaws
3) Steel Panthers, countless hours spent clicking through endless formation set ups
4) WitP, no need to justify it being on the list here.....
5) Highway to the Reich, and with COTA on the way, it´ll climb my list. I might be biased since I´m beta testing COTA [;)]
6) Hearts of Iron. Haven´t tested II yet, but I´m still playing the CORE mod for HoI I
7) Combat Mission series. For reasons already mentioned above

There are many more worth to mention. All games that probably severly threatened my social capabilities and physical fitness. The first "strategy" game I cam across was for the VIC 20 and called World at War or something like that (No - I don´t think Gary G was involved!) and the idea was to build missile bases on very basic maps. Two players head on using one keyboard. There was a gauge showing the "tension" at the top of the screen, and once the tension got high enough all the missile bases would start firing nukes at eachother and the very pixelated cities on the map

I could probably come up with a few more, but that list still represents a fair amount of lost sleep over the last (scary thought - Am I getting old or what?) 15 years.....

/Widell

HoI2 is light years ahead of its predecessor. I personally thought that the original HoI was rather poorly executed ('world market', in particular, made war over resources as Japan meaningless). Besides drastic changes to combat model and a reworked naval/air model (it's very enjoyable), there are bilateral trade agreements in hoI2 that make seizure of the SRA a viable proposition for Japan from an in-game, rather than 'historical', standpoint. Besides, as a WitP player, you will no doubt enjoy the sight of China. No less than 4 warlord states, Nationalists, Commies, Sinkiang, Manchukuo and Mengkukuo and such. China is unrealistically monolithic in WitP ;)

I only play one board game anymore, Advanced Squad Leader. Still a great game but it is sad to go to tourneys and see the same faces. Well, it is good to see them but everybody is aging. Does not bode well for the future.

I love computer games for the ease of play, exposure to more players, graphics and real fog of war. However, the best gaming days of my life were in the early 90s when my three buddies and I would meet three Saturdays out of the month to play ASL Red Barricades. We would usually play til 3 or 4 am and it was just great. Children put an end to that.... I would never give up my computer but I miss playing board games with my buddies.

Avalon Hills Cesar Alesia was a great one two. Excellent multiplayer game.

Thanksgiving week I went to the beach with my family and my two brothers and two little nephews and I played Monopoly all week. What a blast?

Somebody game me Age of Empires II years ago and I played it quite a lot. Simple really, but tons of fun. I used it to get my nephews into computer gaming. Really, great to see my six year old nephew get an interest in the Persians, Egyptians and so on. He really loves those war elephants.
