RE: 2ndAcr vs rroberson Nik Mod 5.0
Great AAR ..
Miller .. Niks mod changes the game is a lot of ways that arent apparent from the FAQ. fortunately for allied players and unfortunately for the japanese the learning surve is steep, I'm seeing how CV's operate in the new environment without having to risk them [;)]
Frankly your doing alright, when the time comes read my AAR and you'll see what i mean.
anyway good luck 2ndACR .. didn't mean to hicack the thread there. but you do need to change strategy from the basic and even CHS games in several ways. From memory and experience i can list a few.
China -- much tougher and no valuable stuff on the front lines anymore. china has more supply generating cities that really help a LOT. also the need not to build up all the front line cities leaves more for replacements and combat use. the chinese have a few more teeth.
Port attacks- After day 1 Port attacks can be brutal .. especially if heavy AA is present ..AA is a component of all base forces so beware them from now on they arent toothless rear area units anymore.
AA Batteries -- Much more useful for both sides . It's possible to really make a place bristling with guns that actually hurt now[;)]
RAF Range --Hurricanes range 5 and spits range 4 make them a lot more useful , and not just for escorts. they can now hop from australia to java so expect some aussie hurricanes here.
Oscars can be damn dangerous now .. especially vs older allied models . even nates can be dangerous now with the accuracy improvements. Neither will hurt allied heavies but thay can dogfight well now.
Allied 4E bombers .. very valuabe assets at 16/month for the B17's . no more allied carpet bombing for quite some time. and with better AA i suspect the days of pummeling Rabaul in one day are over. ( at last)
I think you will encounter more allied mediums 25's and 26's as these arent reduced in quantity and i downgraded several B17 and B18 units to them for use.
I think that just about covers it from memory .. and have fun !

RE: 2ndAcr vs rroberson Nik Mod 5.0
So far so ugly. I have to admit, not having heard of the Manilla strategy (see what taking six months off will do for you) and I'm scrambling to figure out what to do with DEI. I also truly do not know what to do with all those very old American battlewagons.
LoL...and right there's one reason to do the Manila gambit. Even intact....what can you do with those old BB's anyway? Being conservative, i do still tend to like knocking them out as then they can't be used to support any surface actions or bombardments but admitedly, its a remote threat anyway. Japan has too much dangerous airpower lying around to risk such high value units. In a way the Japanese did the Americans a favor in attacking them at Pearl....without it they might have gone out to sea and learned the lesson with no chance to come back for Round II.
I also like hitting Pearl to knock out all that juicy airpower. that also puts a serious cramp in Allied counter-plans and makes him paranoid about the defense of PH, tying up yet more assets
RE: 2ndAcr vs rroberson Nik Mod 5.0
If you do not attack PH, then Allies have circa 100 P40Bs intact, so they can be more aggresive with the AVG and Philiphine P40 units, because he has replacements

That was what I was refering to in regard to him paying for no pearl later....all that airpower has already cleaned out his sub forces off pearl....thats what will hurt him.

RE: 2ndAcr vs rroberson Nik Mod 5.0
If he left those subs near pearl they were dead anyway. I always move subs away from pearl, its a deathtrap and Jap subs in general get beat up really hard by allied ASW anyway, even now. They may not sink but they do get Depth Charged back to port with pieces missing[:D]
You have the ability to arouse various emotions in me: please select carefully.
RE: 2ndAcr vs rroberson Nik Mod 5.0
Have you sank any of his Pearl subs or just drive them off?
RE: 2ndAcr vs rroberson Nik Mod 5.0
He has sank around 3 of my PH subs.........There are lots more out there. [:-]
RE: 2ndAcr vs rroberson Nik Mod 5.0
Well, another couple turns have gone by. Not alot has changed the last few turns. Nik's modification of transport sizes has slowed me down quite a bit. Takes me longer to mass the forces I need to bulldoze my way thru the defenses.
I am really enjoying the AA fire changes. Rob sent 13 B17 on a port attack at 3,000 feet and everyone of them was damaged and he lost 4 somewhere. Not a single hit occured.
The changes to A2A has allowed Rob's air force to survive alot longer than most before.
Looks like China is going to heat up. Rob is massing 14 units in Canton and I am waitiing to see what he does with them.

RE: 2ndAcr vs rroberson Nik Mod 5.0
We have hit day 30. I Still hold most major areas...(Singapore, Manila, Rangoon). Though I think he is about to descend on Rangoon.. He has hammered me on shipping/ships. I have hurt his submarine forces...though not quite as bad as he has hurt mine...thought Id update this game with the current score.
I am loving the nik mod. Game pace feels pretty good so far.

Day 34
Ugly day around Rangoon...IMperial troops are on the city streets...Japanese air is hounding the my transports as they continue the evacuation there.
All in all though, I'm pleased. A week ago I slipped in and removed the bulk of my fighting soldiers from Rangoon, right under the guns if the Imperial Guards...it was a nervous week

Rob, 34 days and you haven't lost a CV yet? Is this a new record? [:D]

Rob has been hiding the US Navy out of fear.[:-]
I have yet to smell a CV after day 2 when they raided Wake invasion forces.

And your carriers would be where exactly?
Methinks a hawaiian harbor of some fame is about to get a visit [;)] from some Japanese tourists.
Rangoon fell today (day 35)

RE: 2ndAcr vs rroberson Nik Mod 5.0
well i don't know in terms of Rob's personal record but for the general record, you'll be hard put out to beat my most farthest along game with Kaiser73. Got up to 3/43 before i even so much as sighted a USN CV..and then it was only a feint to see what the defenses in the Gilberts looked like (no attacks)
RE: 2ndAcr vs rroberson Nik Mod 5.0
Well, my CV's just happen to be somewhere on the map. LOL. Have to keep you guessing as to where they may be.[;)]
Let's just say, that wherever you decide to "test my defense, they will be waiting for you". LOL [:-]
And with Nik's flak model, I do not think I will be hitting PH anytime soon. But anything afloat is a worthy target in that area and west coast.[X(]

RE: 2ndAcr vs rroberson Nik Mod 5.0
Just ploughed through your AAR Scott, kinda reminds me of our old game [;)]
Will try to follow you, most of my time is spent playing turns and updating my own AAR!
Niks mod looks good - hope to give it a try one day.
I don't find attacking Manila with the KB gamey, if Yamamotot hadn't gotten his will the carriers would
never have ventured all the way to Hawaii. It was a huge gamble.

I didnt find it gamey either....shocked me...since no one actually had ever done it before. Pretty logical move I think. That being said I have quite a few torpedo magnets that need attention now. Not use to having all that extra floating steel.

day 46
Well we are now 46 days in and its ugly. He has rolled through Rangoon and is driving on Mandalay. I believe that small hamlet in the middle of the Jungle
is now a lost cause, British Regulars and Indian troops were too slow moving down the trails. I have held off using much air against his incursion...saving my sunday punch.
China is a stalemate. Wouldnt have it any other way. I moved about 80K troops into Canton, another 20 or so into Nanning, he has to dig them out.
Singapore is not long for the British Empire. I had several units retreat the wrong way and now the are cut off. Both my Aussie units stand in front of his advance, but I think he will take it well before it fell historically.
PI, hanging in there...but thats a sad tale told too many times.
I have a few things brewing now....wouldnt be like me to not lose at least one carrier before february.

The liberation of China begins
There isnt much to brag about in February. Only Bataan and Manilla remain of the PI. The barbarians are at the gates of Singapore. The American fleet is in hiding and the Mandalay line is about to be pierced. And then there are those plucky Chinese!
