Interesting size of the RN's new carriers. Also Pompey based? That will be a tight squeeze. For everyone else here's a pic that gives some idea as to how narrow the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour really is:

I found this too from 1905 and it's got no wider since!

Has anyone heard from the guys at MATRIX on this project lately? I have a catalog which gives prices and order procedures, but it is not listed on this site!

Bump. Any news?

And as I understand Matrix will only be working with H3, so is Harpoon Classic going to be worked on any further? I'm just starting to play the Harpoon demos, and it seems to me like H3 is more of a simulation where you command a TF or three and Harpoon Classic is more of a theater level war game. Am I correct?

That would be a very boring war.......the EU vs the US. I gues the US could mobilize a few national Guard units to defeat France. But I can not think of any reason to keep France after we conquer it.

US would have to defeat 300,000 finns with leopard 2s, mobile artillery, elite paratroops, modern AA systems and fifty F18s. Only after that they could move on to other countries. Poland for instance has several armor and mech divisions with very modern equipment.

Allthough I dont think it would be fair that US could disable our F18s by shutting down their navigation systems (iirc).

Best tactic to defeat the finns might be a quick conquest of estonia. Their army is small and not all that modern. Once estonia is lost finns liqueur supply would run dry and theyd be forced to surrender.

Don't know what you mean by 'only working with H3'. AFAIK, Matrix is supposed to be publishing both H3 - Advanced Naval Warfare and Harpoon Classic Commanders Edition.

Your assessment of the different Harpoon might be due more to the designers preferences. Both HCCE and H3 are able to handle monstrous theatre-level games and both can handle the minutaie of a small group.

However, the reason H3 might appear to cater to smaller actions might just be the designers preferences. As the map size grows, the memory requirements grow dramatically, too. There are more than a few H3 scenarios that cover both sides of the Atlantic, for example. However, these are often called Monsters and they really suck up the memory.

Conversely, HCG is able to handle very small engagements. However, I, personally, find it awkward in command and control at this level. To me, it is difficult to plot individual paths and commands for specific units. Of course, this is easier with H3 than with HCG because you can have the game paused in H3 and you can issue all of the orders you like before re-starting the game. This isn't possible in HCG.

There are also massive scenarios available in HCG. Brad's put out a few that I can't even play on my slow computer unless I want to devote a few days of Real Life to it because I can't get it to run faster than 1:1 compression.

Thanks, they really should make you a spokesman Herman; your AARs got me interested and here you are in a different forum answering my questions [:)]. I think I'm leaning towards H3, seems to be more of a simulator as someone else commented.

I wasn't aware that Matrix was going to publishing both H3 and Harpoon Classic versions. For those that purchase Harpoon from AGSI will they be able to update their games to the ANW version? I want to get it soon, but if Matrix is coming out with a new version that has to be bought seperately I'll just wait.

I do not think we would have to defeat the Finns. Nor Poland, Estonia and a bunch of other nations there. Just take out France and germany and the EU crumbles. Besides, Poland is more pro American than they are pro EU, same for Hungary and a few other former East Europe countries.

Just very boring.

Hey guys,

That is really saying without the UK it would be a boring war. We already let you have the bloody colony, now u have it why the hell would we want it back? U are there and ready and you almost speak the Queens English.

We have a ready made army to buffer anyone attacking us ;) And then we have our own forces should you fail us <G>

Our ancesters really were "wise" men and you thought it was a decleration of independence [8|]

Those same AARs have caused others to start flame wars. Go figure. [&:] I'm very glad that they managed to pique your interest. [:D]

A couple of other folks asked this same question.
Others have thought the same. Take a look here.

My hunch is that you are not going to lose out by buying H3 and then buying the upgrade to ANW. It sounds like you are going to shell out the exact same amount as if you waited to buy only ANW.

Now, the difference is going to be the time that you are NOT playing while waiting for ANW! That could be weeks or months. Also, there are hundreds of H3 scenarios currently available to keep you entertained. They will likely be transformed / translated into ANW scenarios by their authors. However, this may or may not be an overnight process as designers might first want to test how their scenario plays with the new ANW features / bug corrections.

So, my advice is, if you are already set on purchasing the game, go ahead and do it. You're only denying yourself the enjoyment and it is very unlikely to cost you more to purchase the upgrade after. If the upgrade does cost you a bit more, I'd bet heavily that it wouldn't be more than the cost of lunch ($5). It's really peanuts for the amount of enjoyment you can have between now and then.
