In regards to art (and I apologise if you addressed this earlier):

Ship side art and plane top/side art.

Are you going to use some of the nifty artwork from the various modders, or did you import the stock stuff?

I think that trying to cut and paste the airplane top art into the file is a pain

Since we added things no in stock or CHS, we had to have art. Lots of art was submitted. But how to work with the art required tools I do not have - not to mention skills I probably do not have. So when Cobra offered to manage it - he became the de facto RHS art coordinator. I am not sure how much of the art of others he has used? He did do a great deal of new art - but there also is a great deal of old art retained - and it may be he has used new art he did not draw himself. In the case of ship art, I have alternate offerings from several people - if you want something different than is in the "package" - and I now know how to name it so it will work! Plane art - that is different - I don't have the ability to change plane panels - you need to talk to Cobra if you want that.

Of all the new ship art for RHS I used 2 from Big B and 1 from Freman - but as I pointed out in RHS install docs ,once you have intalled RHS its open slather as to what ship panels you use just need to match whats being used in the Scenario they will all work
Air art is differant the art panels done only work in RHS - ther are still some spare bitmap slots for the modders to work with but not many spare AIRCRAFT slots in the database

Simple question: should RHS have its own copy of the game directory? It's currently 1.5 GB, so I'm a bit nervous about simply doing a copy.

in a simple anwser there has never been a problem in just copying the full install to another dir it will all work - there is one trap though - if you uninstall the original installation of WITP none of the other installs will work until you re-install WITP then they all work again

RE: RHS Plan (RHSCVO Test Set - see end)

Post by el cid again »

I tentatively plan to release a file set to testers tomarrow- Saturday - April 29 - if my test files run through the night on two systems without major issues being apparent. Anyone wanting to see them can get them from me, Cobra, and when posted, Roguemarine or Spooky (I think - Cobra handles that end).

We will continue to accept corrections to data while the testers run. I do not work Monday - so I plan to release RHSCVO (with passive Russians) and RHSRAO (a Russian active variant otherwise IDENTICAL) on Tuesday - May 2 - incorporating any lessons learned from testers.

Note that unlike stock or CHS, RHS scenarios can ALWAYS be corrected.
The moment you point out an error that survives a one day review process, the revised file will be sent out to download sites. So feedback is always welcome and won't wait for the next release if it is pure data and purely a correction. Not that we can always make every field what everyone likes - we have here a dirty data set where no one is going to dispute most corrections.

Revision: The need to update a couple of thousand ships - they do not accept corrections unless you refresh every vessel in the class - even things not visible in the editor (like cargo) only change if refreshed - and to run a second pre test of the economic system - are imposing a half day delay. Test files should release Sunday April 30. RHSCVO (and the Russian Active Variant RHSRAO) should release on schedule Tuesday.

I am running a third pass test of the economic system - and trying to get correct data into another thousand ships or so. [Every change requires hand alteration - unless you trust WITP Excel - which I do not].
My hands are getting sore! More in a few hours.

I am setting the test set to run - and releasing it to those interested - to detect major bugs or data errors prior to official release tomarrow. I need sleep - and my fingers need a break. I HATE THE EDITOR!!!

I have decided to release a final test file set (v 2.09) in about two hours.
I want to run this set for erratta - and continue the 2.08 file set out longer in time. It has produced over 100 minor errors - and some improvements. And I want to add the Royal Thai Navy (such as it is - torpedo boats anyone? Not MTBs - Italian style torpedo boats - ancestors of the "torpedo boat destroyer"). And some RN carriers need air groups. Mostly I am tweeking the economies - there are many now - every isolated place.

I now can say with confidence I will release RHSCVO (and the Russian Active Option RHSRAO) in about 12 hours - Wednesday morning - Alaska Time, 3 May 2006. I may be able to release RHSBBO (and the Russian Passive Option RHSRPO) the following day. The revision of this for you pick the destination of the troops - you get political points to do it (RHSPPO) should then follow Saturday. And I estimate I may be able to turn out the Empire Of the Sun option (RHSESO: a Japan optimized production and operations plan variant) the following Tuesday.

Somehow in my RHS files (I might have messed them) aircraft weaponry is strange. US planes had some of their weapons shifted by one (that is, instead of .50 cal MG thay had SAFAT etc.) Also, did you plan to reduce the range or leave it as original ?

And I think that making rockets as aircraft cannons will result to them being used in air-to-air combat (not sure about that since they are in late war and cannot be tested without test scenario easily).

Someone gave the idea of making them PGMs (donno if game really supports them even when editor does). But then they will probably be treated like bombs...

Did I ever tell you how much I HATE the editor? It does that.
Yep - shifted one. Good catch. Most allied planes shifted one for that gun - one shifted two - and several didn't shift. No explanation.

The ranges are reduced (or changed) for air guns.

Testers say the rockets work - but I have not seen them work yet. I fear they may work too well. Time will tell.

The PGM idea was mine, I havent got far with it though. I am going to equip some P-40E with it and see what they can do in defending the PI. I may also try some of the other settings.

I suppose a Rocket was like a bomb as far as the game goes, unless you can set a range which might allow firing from outside of LAA range. But I doubt it.

I also share your fears about the Rockets being used in A-A by the program.

Having trialled rockets for Cid a long while ago, I confirm they work very well against shipping. Barges, PTs and other small craft will be very vulnerable once rockets appear.

After many flights with rocket equipped fighters, I didn't see one occurence of rockets being used air to air.

Hi,

sounds good. But nevertheless it is possible that PGM may work better. Plane-launched rockets are probably in the code (because this feature existed in PACWAR and the code seems basically to be the same).

If you define the HVAR rockets added by Sid as PGM in the editor, they appear as PGM in the bomb section of the in-game plane database (I'm not talking about the editor here, talking about the database you can watch when playing the game!). Thus the code seems to accept PGM devices as PGM (hmm, probably a confusing sentence).

(If I find the time, I'll test this further)

It appears that the code things PGMs are air-ground weapons.

I had the theory that defining a aircraft gun as a rocket would work both air-air and air-ground - because guns do both. It is tricky and there is a down-side - but it seems to work. The down side is a function of a code problem - planes have no ammunition limits. So far there is no indication this is a big problem - because I used a ROF = 1. But time will tell.

Except of course that HVAR are not GUIDED munitions at all. They are aimed. At a few thousand yards it may not matter much to the target - and mine only have short effective ranges of 2000 and 3000 yards - so IF they worked I would be happy. But I think they ONLY would work air-ground - and the intent is to have them work air-air as well. They were originally invented by the Brits for attacking submarines - but by the Axis for attacking bombers.
