Sick CFL teams next year

Quebec doesn't have a big enough stadium. Ottawa had good fan suport until the last 2 years. One 500 season in 30 years. Just bad management.
Ottawa only had 1 person in the office over the winter and had maybe 2000 season tickets due to that. I think anyone intrested would like to hold off to get things lined up.

I just took a look, and it is 2 .500 seasons in 26 years -- not that that is much better. [:(]
However, it makes the 10 .500 or better seasons by the mediocre 'Riders in the same time period look not so bad. [:)]
RE: Virtual vs Real
Where did you hear this information about Ottawa suspended in the CFL? And how do you know they are heading to Quebec? Did you read about this on the net or something?
I have my sources lol[:D]

-Actually they do, they were considering going there for the 10th team expansion.
-The choices are Halifax and Quebec city and Windsor.
-I heard people were offering to purchase the gades and move them to quebec, someone wanted to move them to detroit actually.
-but the league isn't interested

Wouldn't it be better to find a good owner in Ottawa and to start a new franchise in Quebec City?
-That's a good idea but the fan support in ottawa has been terrible recently, that's the problem, but they should have really like 12 teams in the CFL.

RE: Virtual vs Real
The CFL has suspended operations of the Renegades for this year, moved Winnipeg to the eastern conference, and the dispersal draft of the Ottawa players is to be held tomorrow (April 12).
Hopefully the 'Riders will pick up Kerry Joseph....
-now it's gonna be easier for winnepeg, so now I have my two teams in the easern division, I guess Riders are my West team now because before they were my 2rd team and my 2nd west team. In the east I like Toronto and then Montreal.
-Joseph will do good for the riders because they have a way better O-line then Ottawa did and better recievers.

RE: Virtual vs Real
It sure does seem like that Ottawa has had a hard time supporting a team in the History of the CFL. I mean, they have had Teams come and go in the CFL over the past 100 years. How is the Fan support in that city? Are there a lot of diehard Football fans there?
RE: Virtual vs Real
Well, MjH that doubled the number. It IS the fans fault!![;)] I really don't have respect for the Watters family (well the son or father). I blame Jr. the most... but what does that count.
The 'Riders did go to 2 cups in that time (losing to the mighty Flutie led Argos and wining one of the best games played).

- There aren't many diehard fans in the CFL (CFL sadly lacks fans compared to NFL) anyways, but Ottawa hardly has any.
- attendance avg for Ottawa was like 18 400, worst in the league

RE: Virtual vs Real
Look over the last 30 years. Ottawa fans have shown the are good fans.
The Argos won 2 Grey Cups in a row with Flutie and drew about 15,000. 10 years later the are getting over 30,000. Hamilton 2 years ago drew less then 18,000. Bob Young buys them and puts flowers in the womens bathroom and now are sold out.
Management makes a huge difference... in the CFL.

RE: Virtual vs Real
- Actually argos drew more than 15 000.
- Hamilton always has good crowds
Ottawa
- Ottawa has had bad seasons throughtout history
- Low fan support already.

Link about attendance in 2003 Hamilton drew 14,863. In 2002 17241. Bob Young took over the team in 2004. After the other 2 walked away due to they could not or would not pay the bills anymore.
Can't find anything from '96 or '97. I was at every game and I know they only had 15,000 average. When Hamilton came it would bump up to around 20k.

RE: Virtual vs Real
- Well in was only for 2 years
- Hamilton can get away with it because they have money still
- They were a winning team in '99
- Ottawa is a different situation
*Any Ottawa Jersey's around**

RE: Virtual vs Real
The Ottawa team is done. So the CFL will have 8 teams now. I am not sure if the CFL is planning on any expansion in Quebec ,Halifax, or Winsor and really it does not make sense for another Canadian team to join when a city like Ottawa who cannot keep the team for a long time unlike most teams who have been there for a long time have much better management and fan base to keep the team. CFL should try to bring some US cities perhaps two teams that does not have an NFL team in that city and hopefully bring back Canadian US league back like the 1992-94 season. The problem in 1992 was that the CFL expanded to quickly so that is why some of the US teams dropped out in the league. Maybe that is something the CFL could look into.

Yeah I did some work on it and its not bad considering I had to alter the logos a bit.

RE: Virtual vs Real
I have a feeling we may not see any US based CFL teams for a long time. After there attempt to expand down south, it nearly killed the league. I think the CFL owners don't want to take that risk again, at least not now.
RE: Virtual vs Real
I lived in Memphis when the Mad Dogs were there- the CFL experiment with U.S. based teams. Baltimore was pretty good and had a good following, but the other U.S. based teams floundered. I saw the Mad Dogs play several times and they were NOT a good example of CFL football. They played in the Liberty Bowl which was really too small to accomodate the regulation CFL field and football in Memphis in August is brutally hot and humid. Pepper Rodgers was in charge and he didn't do a very good job of marketing the Mad Dogs. Even with all the obstacles, a fan base was forming- not a big one, but it was starting. I guess the biggest obstacle to CFL in the south is college football. SEC and ACC rule the fan base. CFL rules were perplexing to the average fan. I would think that a U.S. CFL franchise might work much better in a border state that doesn't have an NFL team. Along the border, I would think people would have more exposure to CFL ball, understand it better and with the cooler temperatures in August, they might embrace it.
I have seen a little CFL football on TV and it's fun to watch. I hope the CFL gets it's 10th team and does well. A side thought, I think the NFL has too many teams. But that's another discussion.

RE: Virtual vs Real
If the CFL wanted to move into United States markets in the future, it should do so in mid sized northern cities like Portland or Columbus.
A team in Windsor would be able to tap the Detroit market. That would be cool.
I have often wondered why the CFL does not try to market into border states. I wouldn't mind watching Winnipeg Blue Bomber games in Minnesota.

You have that backwards. The US based teams saved the CFL.The money that the league was able to bring in through exspanson fees is what saved the league from going bankrupt.

- I think Quebec and Halifax could keep a team because they have no major sports teams.
- Ottawa is more of a tourist and government area so you can't have a strong fan base.
- People just pass through their.
- I say they need at 14 or 16 teams so they can have a wildcard round and two teams with bye, it's tougher that way.
East
- There's 3 teams in the east (move Winnepeg back West and assuming Ottawa won't be back)
- In Halifax, NS or Moncton, NB they have no teams and football is big there, so there's some good areas for 5 teams in the east.
- Windsor likes football and has no teams, it gets CFL exposure to the states (particulary Detroit) so thats 6 teams
- In Quebec city you have a chance, but there winter sports dominate, but it can be done or NewFoundland, they have nothing going on there so you can have a possible 7th and 8th team in one of those areas, maybe more Quebec because Newfounland isn't a rich province.
West
-You have 5 teams (Winnipeg is back west)
-Saskatoon, good area for football, people there will go to games, 6 teams.
- maybe 2 teams in Vancouver would be a good idea, but the CFL might not do that
- Or Bnaff, Alberts that's an area that will get attendance, so you got you 7th team.
