West Coast

The 111th RCT begins loading at San Francisco. Destination: Canton Island. Once Canton is garrisoned the Central Pacific’s initial line of defense should be in place. Then I’ll need to worry about strengthening it. I do have the Oglala and all the DM’s at Pearl laying mines out at Midway and Johnston. Once Canton is occupied, I’ll look at sending some minelayers on that round trip.

South Pacific

Things begin to stir here again. An amphibious force arrives at Kavieng and starts to unload. CVN still hasn’t make a move west into New Guinea but I’m betting he will soon. The Enterprise and Lexington are en route from Noumea back to New Zealand again. I’m still trying to move ASW assets into this area.

Philippines

More mop-up amphib ops in this theater. Landings at Taytay occur with no opposition. The force at Naga is also still unloading. CVN’s routine bombing of Clark continues.
ABDA
Malaya

The Nells are back at Singapore. Anti-aircraft batteries shoot down three attackers. It’s nice to make CVN at least pay some price for this bombing campaign.

Central Pacific

The 27th Division completes unloading at Pearl Harbor. Once again, there are three divisions holding this strategic location. I’m beginning to believe that any action in this theater will occur on the southern flank. After Canton is secured, I’m going to look at garrisoning and improving Baker Island. This should certainly take place if I ever intend an offense at Tarawa/Makin.

South Pacific

Kavieng falls to a Japanese assault. Work continues at Noumea as I’m trying to improve all three bases on the island.

Philippines

Yet another shock attack at Naga suffers high casualties. Over 2,000 Japanese fall while 122 Filipinos are felled. At Taytay, an unopposed Japanese assault takes the base.

ABDA

The De Ruyter and her escorts are attacked by the SS I-158. Unfortunately for I-158, her torpedoes miss and the dutch destroyers launch a devastating counterattack, hitting the luckless sub with four depth charges. I’m hopeful this will dispatch one more Japanese sub. At Tarakan, three Japanese battleships appeared and shelled the shore installations. Damage was also inflicted on the AK and PT in port. I haven’t spotted any transports headed towards Tarakan so I believe this is more of a raid than an invasion. I’m sure an invasion will occur soon, but not at this time. Moving near Balikpapan, the Houston is sighted an attacked by Zeroes. She takes two bombs that inflict little damage on her armor. On Timor, I’m redesignating the F.K.51 squadrons to other commands. Southwest Pacific will get most of them, but will be loaning them to China for a bit. One squadron will go to Southeast Asia. A small convoy of AKs will transport them to India.

China/Burma

More air combat over Wuhan, with little for either side to show for it. 2 Nates are destroyed with w I-16c’s damaged. Just outside of Yenen, a Chinese Corps out scouting is struck by almost 70,000 Japanese. The Corps holds its ground as the Japanese suffer moderate casualties. I’m on the defensive at Yenen and will only attempt to hold the ground I’ve currently taken.

In Burma, Blenheims join the IL-4s at Rangoon in striking the 33rd Division.

West Coast

Two fighter groups and one fighter squadron are loading in San Francisco for transport to Australia. One group is P-40s and one is P-39s. They certainly won’t provide air superiority, but they may help me achieve local superiority for short periods of time.

Philippines

Shock attacks at Clark begin again. This time, they succeed in reducing the fortifications to three. I consider this attack as heralding the final phase in the struggle for Clark. Manila is somewhat prepared for a siege and the forces at Bataan are also still resisting.

ABDA

A Japanese carrier is spotted east of Borneo. 21 Kates strike a single AP in the straight and hit here with three torpedoes. The presence of this carrier is going to be problematic as many of the forces evacuating from the Philippines are still waiting in Borneo for transport to Australia. In other bad news, Mersing falls to a shock assault. With Japanese ships beginning to move in this area, I’m transferring torpedo planes and fighters to Balikpapan and Samarinda in hopes that I can inflict some damage on the invader. Just one carrier probably can’t provide an overwhelming CAP and I’m hoping to put this theory to the test.

Malaya

Singapore continues to be pounded from the air. CVN is being deliberate here and I think it’s going to pay off for him. At Johore Bahru a shock attack takes moderate casualties but reduces the forts to 4. Most of my forces are waiting in Singapore where I plan to make the final stand.

India

The 19th Bomb Group based at Calcutta has reached full strength. I’m planning to move it forward to Rangoon, which has almost reached a level five airfield. From there, they can either bomb the 33rd Division or industrial targets in Indochina. An RAF Air Headquarters and two base forces currently at Mandalay are ordered to Rangoon to support this effort. I will be scouting south with small land forces to make sure I have plenty of time to evacuate this force before Rangoon falls.

China

Outside Yenan, the Japanese shock attack again. My troops inflict severe damage, but this time are pushed back into Yenen. I do have several fresh corps in Yenen that should be able to offer some resistance. I also have a couple of corps en route from further south to bolster the defenses here. CVN seems to be focusing most of his effort in Northern China, which will force me into the defensive here. I am hoping to find an opportunity in Central or Southern China.

South Pacific

It is with great relief that I can report that the 2nd Marine Division has safely reached Noumea and is beginning to unload. At least one force of substance is now holding the island. To the Northeast, the 114th RAF Base Force arrives at Luganville and begins improving the base. The South Pacific now actually has some forces in place to manage.

Philippines

At Clark Field the Japanese Army stages another shock attack. This one gets 1 to 1 odds and lowers the forts from 3 to 2. Almost 400 of my troops are lost. Over 900 Japanese soldiers fall. At Naga, another shock attack fails to get good odds but does not suffer heavy casualties. CVN how outnumbers me 5 to 1 at this location.

ABDA

The three battleships are back at Tarakan and deliver another long bombardment. In a nuisance reprisal, the Adelaide and Marblehead with two DDs bombard Menado, destroying two Zeroes. A small group of Betties attack Samarinda and score one hit on the runway.

Malaya

The 60 Nells are back at Singapore. More casualties are reported amongst the defenders. They are quite discouraged by the lack of support from the outside world. At Johore Bahru, my level 4 forts hold against a shock attack by 18,000 troops against my 3,600 defenders.

China

At Wuhan, my regularly scheduled sweep nets three Nates in return for two I-16s. At Nanning, some Nells attack the 28th Chinese Corps. My concentration of forces against this city is proceeding and I am conducting bombardment attacks until the concentration is complete.

Philippines

24 Kates and 23 Vals are reported over Manila. The port installations are damaged and I believe the final blows have been inflicted upon the AVD Childs. The Childs has been sitting in Manila Harbor with 99 system damage for quite some time but has refused to sink. Three more bomb hits will likely take care of this. Carrier aircraft also strike at Clark Field, along with Betties, in support of ground forces there. Later in the day, 68 Kates and 39 Vals strike the 31st RCT. I’m not sure if the full KB is here, but it is certainly a good sized carrier force. There must be at least three carriers to deliver this many Kates. Amphibs arrive of Tacloban and begin unloading. Finally, after a lengthy resistance, Clark Field falls to a shock attack that achieved 5 to 1 odds. All forces retreat to Manila.

ABDA

CVN is starting to move against the north shore of Borneo. Several CA’s conduct a bombardent at Brunei. East of Borneo, the Gudgeon attacks the CVE Hosho, but after an agonizing wait reports that she has failed to score. In much happier news, the O24 reports that she has scored one torpedo hit on the CVE Taiyo. This is certainly encouraging news. Kates from the Philippine carrier force hit Force Z at Balikpapan at extreme range. 23 Kates bomb the POW and Repulse, scoring several hits. Little damage is inflicted as my armor holds. I order Force Z south to Australia as the KB now knows where I am and would certainly enjoy destroying the most powerful battleship currently in my inventory. Kates also attack several cargo ships at Balikpapan and inflict serious damage on the Siantar. North of Borneo, CVN bombards Brunei again.

Malaya

Airstrikes continue at Singapore. At Johore, my forts are reduced to zero by a shock attack by almost 18,000 troops. I expect the base to fall to the next attack.

India/Burma

Blenheims out of Rangoon conduct an attack on the heavy industry at Hanoi. No scores this time, but I’m hoping to improve upon this.

China

At Nanning, I conduct my first deliberate attack on the position. I do not achieve good odds but do determine that there are less than 15,000 Japanese opposing me.

My two cents. I see that you are deploying much of your LCU assets forward early and to isolated areas as Canton, Noumea and Rangoon, these locations can be easily cut off and hence your LCU will be destroyed neting the jap easy victory points.

I would suggest you build up PH, Australia and India before you venture out into the unknown and when you do make sure you bring along enough LBA power to blow the jap out off the skies and out off the water.

I am not saying you should not build these places but perhaps with less important LCU just in case the japanese hammer drops on you, you can not stand up against the hammer until mid 42 at the earliest if the gods favor you.

(AF base >4 + aviation regiment or base force equivalents) * 2+ suporting bases one can be your uber CVTF = levelbombers 100% and no AV problems for your 200+ fighters and 200+ bombers = unlimited power = certain victory.

You can do this in several places but it takes a bit of time, safer to do this in an rear area and then start from there.
India>Burma>Indochine and Malaya
PH>Palmyra and Christmas>Secure sealanes to South pacific and australia>Central pacific
Australia>New Guinea>Philipines skip the Solomons
Australia>Timor>DEI

You will crush everything with airpower the LCU and Navy are a mere means of securing bases from where you can apply your force.

You only have two goals 1 Denie the jap the resourses 2 Secure bases close to the jap mainland so that you can apply the force. The path to theses goals can be varied but manageble by -44 if the jap does not defend properly

Remember, nothing can stop the force! Read this excellent link tm.asp?m=1100163

After an unanticipated real life intrusion into the more important world of WITP, I'm hoping to have more time for the war again.

Thanks for the comments, Kapten. I certainly agree with your thoughts on forward deploying in Rangoon. The only reason I have units there is to avoid the malaria in Burma. I have not moved any ground units from India into Rangoon and do not plan to have any air units in Rangoon when (not if) it falls. I have small forces thrust south from Rangoon to provide advance warning of any land approaches to Rangoon which, at least in my mind, should give me time to evacuate the base and take up a new position close to Mandalay. I just don't want to suffer attrition while I wait for CVN to make his move. I also started the SEAC Chinese units across the mountains from China at the start of the game and am looking for them to arrive sometime in mid-February. All new forces arriving in Karachi will be assigned to defend India and I'm considering having a couple of Chinese Corps move back to India. I am also converting Australian Blenheims or Hudsons to Beauforts so that they can carry torpedoes against an invasion of India. I'm unsure as to the relative importance of Ceylon, but have decided to focus my initial efforts on the Indian mainland rather than an island. To my untutored eye, the Calcutta, Diamond Harbor, Dacca, Chadpur quadrangle seems to be a good point to defend from. It's malaria free, has a rail link to Karachi, and is mutually supporting. I'm also defending the other major bases in India but have not got major forces at the ports with an air rating under 2 as I believe that if CVN captures one of these bases I should be able to use my air power against it and keep him from building it up. I've also got all the Dutch minelayers back in India carrying mines as many places as possible. I spent about a month mining Rangoon just to be a nuisance and am now focusing on India.

I think you are right about Canton. I will look at pulling back the RCT I have situated there.

Noumea is a calculated risk I'm running based on previous WPO experience with CVN's style of play. I believe he will secure the Solomons, something he has not yet begun to do, before moving south.

In Australia, I'm focusing a lot of energy on building up Darwin and the bases on the eastern coast. I will have several Australian Divisions in place before the end of January. In another calculated risk, I'm transferring some forces from southern Australia to assist with defense in the north.

The Admiral Spruance AAR is a good read.

Thanks for all the thoughts. I'm sort of learning as I go so appreciate any advice offered.

Phillipines/ABDA

The Japanese bombardment of Brunei continues. Martins out of Balikpapan strike at this force but fail to score any hits. Amphibious forces are also active throughout the area. At Guiuan, a force begins unloading troops which will surely soon conquer the undefended base. A similar report is received from Ormoc. Forces reported landing yesterday at Tacloban attack and capture the base. In the air, Betties strike at my forces on Balikpapan. In the Philippines, the 41st PA Division is attacked by both Army and Navy bombers and suffers 42 casualties.

Malaya

A modest force of Nells strikes the Singapore airbase to little effect. On the ground, the gateway to Singapore is opened as Johore Bahru falls to a shock attack.

China

My training program over Wuhan continues as 39 Chinese fighters darken the skies. Only six Nates rise to my challenge. One Nate is shot down and one I-16 also falls.

Central Pacific

A small force of Nells appears to have been positioned on Wake Island for the purpose of launching raids on Midway. 8 bombers struck this morning. If CVN is going to strike with a small force like this, it might be a good point for me to get a Marine fighter squadron.

Philippines/ABDA

Landings continue at Ormoc and Guiuan. Both bases will fall to an assault at the end of the day. A Japanese bombardment force also hits Kuching to start the day. Later, the S-39 strikes back against a convoy and puts to torpedoes into a cargo vessel. CVN closes out the day with a deliberate attack at Naga. My defenders continue to hold but the force against them is getting stronger.

Malaya

CVN gets 125 bombers over Singapore today. One Catalina is destroyed at the seaplane base
India/Burma

A few Blenheims out of Rangoon bomb the heavy industry at Hanoi, scoring one hit. Other bombers launch and hit the 33rd Division again. I don’t think I’m doing much, but it is good training.

China

41 Chinese fighters sweep over Wuhan today with each side losing one plane. The I-16 squadron is starting to get their experience into the 60s. At 70, I intend to stand them down for a bit and move another squadron up.
