Ship slot 6429: Dunrea, class 1511, Derbyshire, British, is supposed to arrive 411225 at location 299. Location 299 does not have a description, in short, it is blank, altho it does say that the 91st, 92nd, 93rd, 449th and 459th fighter squadrons are located there. When you look at the fighter groups, they point to location 299 saying their HQ is ROC or UK Southwest Asia. The fighters assigned are p-39d, p45d, p40n, p38g, p38j. Slots 1007-9,1027,1031.

Just a quick comment: I may have missed this in all the discussion leading up to the release, but a quick look with the editor at the smaller cargo capacities makes it appear that very few ships (mainly British from what I saw) can now upgrade to AR, MLE, etc. Not being able to convert to these tenders will impact the game significantly in my humble opinion. Is there a workaround for this or are these conversions no longer possible?

Actually the work around is built in. There were few ships big enough to qualify, so I made sure both sides had a class defined at the right size. Our size ratings are meant to convert from grt (or dwt) to the actual cargo tonnage hauled (different for liquid and solid, also, in code, different for combat assault - as it should be). Anyway, the conversion reduced the numbers, and I considered this impact - and while I don't like the conversion rule - I did not disable it.

Second question: In CHS1.6 and current RHS, there are numerous ship in the database which have a starting location of zero equating to "delayed" in the port location. I have never seen any of these ships appear in CHS1.6 and have to assume that these ships is RHS will never appear also. If they never appear in the game, is there any purpose in their being in the database? Or are they viable ships that have just never had a starting location assigned and therefore are in error and should have a starting location assigned? If they are never meant to be in play then removing them would free up a considerable number of slots.

I assume (you know what they say about assumptions) that CHS knew what it was doing - and that these ships appear wherever the AI pleases. In Japan's case we can look up the ships and they seem to get assigned a port. And I am told the AI is simply not competent to run the Allies - ever - and I believe it (Everyone quick - abandon your position and run to Bat aan ? really)

Regarding New Zealand Command and your statement that it is "not in play". If it is not in play then what is represented in slot 130, labeled "New Zealand Command" (as an HQ unit), and it does appear in the game on 12/7 in Auckland, New Zealand reporting to ANZAC? Do not be so hasty, sir, to dismiss what others find to be there. Check your editor, or fire up the game yourself and take a look in Auckland. If it is "not in play", then why does it exist in the scenerio?

Actually, the New Zealand Command does exist - and I am not expressing myself well. I have everyone in Australia and New Zealand (not quite all their units - some report to other commands) reporting to ANZAC command. Something about command HQ - but I don't remember exactly what the issue is. Only certain commands work well. Same same on both sides. If the command is not in the top group for your side, it is not really a command in the sense of bossing a region - and anything not reporting DIRECTLY to a major command is also not properly coordinated in that region.

In CHS NZ Command and it's slot was used to make Indian Command and make it restricted command. Donno if the case is same here.

Yes - that is it. I put NZ command back in its stock location - and there it is a "restricted command." Indian Command in CHS was in that location for some reason - probably so it would be restricted. But various things have caused us to convert back towards stock slot usage except for good cause. Now IF I put NZ units under NZ command - then they will be unable to move. You want that? That is the issue.

That's right about CHS....been playing that version since it arrived on the scene. However, with RHS (and I am assuming also in the to-be-released version of CHS (off of which RHS uses as a foundation)), there is a UK India Command (slot 215) as well as the New Zealand Command (slot 130), so in RHS New Zealand Command in back in play as well as a brand new UK India Command.

Good reasoning - but wrong in this case. CHS did not change its command slots - after much thought by Andrew. I did. And the India Command is not new - just traded in location with the NZ command - it is also in CHS - and I think was "new" in CHS 155. I decided it is safer to honor the stock slots - and I had a lot of trouble witn NZ - UNTIL I learned to put its LCUs in stock slots. Had immobile CD units marching all over the place - code thought they were mech cavalry! Static devices mattered not a whit!

Slot 299 used to be "Mideast"

Andrew said he was removing it from his map - and I "pre-converted" for compatability. It is a nightmare - thousands of ships and units went there! Took me many hours - and it seems I missed these few. Sorry. They should be at Aden. Noted. Will flash out ship and air group files v 2.43 now.

I have found a few errors which I would like your input on?

(1) Hurricane I should this not read Hurricane IIA or IIB.

(2) Production of Hurricane IIC should start in June 1942 not May 1943.

(3) Hurricane IV starts in May 1943 not in June 1942.

(4) Anson aircraft art wrong at this time it shows a P-38?

(5) I have started this game using RHS Revision 3.42 twice now and both times the AA fire shot down nearly 100 aircraft of the Japanese attack on PH. This seems a bit over the top to me as if memory serves only about 30 Jap planes fell to American forces during the attack.

I hope you find this useful!

Hi,

No change comments this time. Just want to congratulate you on what is looking like a job well done. I like what I am seeing with your scenerio. I will continue to assist in spotting possible or potential problems and post them. I did find the Luckenbach freighters for conversion to repair ships, tenders, etc, but there is only ten of them. I will probably "reconvert" some of the downsized ones for use as conversion ships via the editor when I really start to play this in earnest - 10 is just too low a number for me.

Again, thanks for all your hard work....and to CobraAus for the art (it is great!), and all the other participants in this project.

Regarding Japanese aircraft shot down: I have also found during several runs on 7 Dec that a fairly steady 100 Japanese carrier aircraft plus or minus 10, end up shot down by flak. About 10-12 zeros 60 or so Vals and 30 or so Kates. That is giving the Japanese carrier air arm quite a whack on day one. This does seem excessive.

US Fleet damage seems in the normal range that was occuring with CHS 1.06 and I have not noticed anything way out of line.

Is flak too powerful? Perhaps I should run the first turn 10-20 turns and get the high low and average losses. El Cid, would you like some extensive testing to be done on the Dec 7 aircraft losses. Even aircraft destroyed on the ground are much higher than in CHS 1.06. Let me know. I have the time.

Sorry, but the "ANZAC Command, New Zealand Command, India Command" thing sounds truly kafkaesque... I am using v 2.42. Many New Zealand air units are assigned to UK India Command. Is this normal? I mean, they were somehow assigned to the indian theater of operations, that is, you should send them there?

CV Indomitable (arriving Karachi 12/9/41) has only one squadron on board (Fulmars). Is this intentional? In older versions I believe it had three squadrons on board. With only one it's at 12 a/c out of a capacity of (IIRC) 45.

CVL Hermes has a device with a blank name (and it's out of ammo!).

RE: RHS Revision 3.42 [minor sensor and command update]

CV Indomitable (arriving Karachi 12/9/41) has only one squadron on board (Fulmars). Is this intentional? In older versions I believe it had three squadrons on board. With only one it's at 12 a/c out of a capacity of (IIRC) 45.

Actually - this IS an error: it should be NO PLANES AT ALL on board!!!

There are four squadrons - 800; 806; 827 and 831 with 12, 12, 9 and 9 planes, respectively, for a total of 42 (nearly your 45 capacity). But until February 1942 she is ONLY acting as an aircraft ferry between Aden and Singapore - and her air group is not available until then!

Sharp eyes. And I will fix the error - so you get NO PLANES AT ALL. [This particular mod is for those who take their history literally - so what happened is what you get. You get other options in later versions.] Thanks.

I don't think I looked at this - so it is what it was when I began. But, yes, some units are under UK command - and probably some under other commands. But if in New Zealand? I don't think so. Today I went through and made the New Zealand command active for ground units - and all home defense brigades, bases and island garrisons were placed under it. I should check air units. Naval units don't work quite the same way - but some might be also tasked only locally - and probably I should look. In general, until now, planes in Malaya and Eastern Burma should be SE Asia Command, and Western Burma and India and Ceylon under India Command, and if any are in Australia or major points north of New Zealand, probably ANZAC or SW Pacific Command. As I say, I never have looked at this - presuming CHS had it right.

(2) Production of Hurricane IIC should start in June 1942 not May 1943.

This probably is confusing for players. To a modder in WITP "production" is NOT production - it is "available for operational use in PTO" - a different thing entirely. In real life it takes time to move from factory to a unit. In WITP it happens at the speed of light. In real life it takes time to learn how to use a plane. In WITP it happens at hypersonic speed. We looked at when the first unit actually entered the theater, and generally set that as our "production" date - since they instantly become available theater wide from that date. In some cases, where planes are made on the map, we look at operational use, not when they existed on the map. In other cases, when the plane never was in use, we use best case real planes for a guide - and calculate first operational use from test flight or production start or some other hard date. But in general, in CHS you got planes theater wide early - either the date of production or up to a year earlier than that. In RHS, you get planes LATER than production - a variable amount later - but not generally less than two months. So if it is later than real production - yep - that is the RHS pattern - should be later. The only question is "how much later" - and why?

(4) Anson aircraft art wrong at this time it shows a P-38?

I have pointed at the slot indicated by Cobra. I have emailed him a query to insure it is right.

(5) I have started this game using RHS Revision 3.42 twice now and both times the AA fire shot down nearly 100 aircraft of the Japanese attack on PH. This seems a bit over the top to me as if memory serves only about 30 Jap planes fell to American forces during the attack.

OK -

First - my air model is "uncalibrated." I modified aircraft durability and AA characteristics - and have no idea if they are going to work with code perfectly, too high or too little? But the GOAL was to INCREASE AA losses - because they were clearly too low. And I DO have a way to make them decrease. I am using the minimum durability ratings that will work - we can multiply them up to six times and they will still work! So we have a way to address any issue that may exist - UNLESS the losses are still too low. Too high? Not a problem.

Second - the real attack was essentially unopposed by AA on the first round - and WITP seems not to know that - so we probably are taking twice the AA fire we should on that day. Cut losses by half to compare with history.

Third - the real attack may not use the same altitudes you are using. What are your altitude settings? MY AA has severe altitude limits - and you can get ZERO losses to it - if you only fly high enough! It is really up to you what you lose to AA - as in real life. Of course, if you insist on using torpedo bombing, you are going to take it hard. Particularly if the Army AA guns are manned (they were not) and have ammunition (they did not).

We need a different attack to measure AA - PH is not the right one. I note players reporting about the right losses over Clark. The right losses would be zero - but the AI sets the altitude too low - so you get some. But not many. The real attack came in above AA fuse setting levels.
We need some control event in history - we know the guns and the planes - and we know the altitude - and then we run 100 planes 50 times - something like that - and then we will "calibrate" the model with my data set.
