I am glad no one took offense at my referrence to "pounders" as antiquated medieval terminology. It was meant more as poking fun than an insult.

I actully find many historic, colorful British unit names quite entertaining when compared to the mundane names most American units had in WWII.

Yank here! However, as can probably be guessed by my monicker, I tend to play German more often than not.

We Yanks have some strange names for our military units ourselves. Like labeling all anti-tank guns as "tank destroyers", whether towed or self propelled.

Some of my favorite colorful British monickers are KOSB (Kings Own Scottish Borderers) and the Ox and Bucks (Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry (who by the way constituted the glider borne coup-demain on Pegasus bridge) One of my all time favorite war movie scenes takes place in Daryl Zannuck's cinemagraphic depiction of Corneilus Ryan's famous book, The Longest Day. The name of the famous British actor of the era who portrays Major John Howard escapes me at the moment, but I absolutely love the scene that occurs just after they debark from the glider and he stands up to exhort his troops to the charge onto the bridge with the line "up the ox and bucks, up the ox and bucks!".

Yes, I think we do that rather well. So much more evocative than I/502/101 even though that was a splendid unit. Names like The Buffs, the Black Watch, The Sherwood Foresters, The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders are memorable. My old regiment: The Honourable Artillery Company/Royal Horse Artillery does have a certain elegance and our full dress uniform, even more so!

Yes, I fully realize the British and Americans are two people separated by a common language.

I am also aware of the inconsistencies in terminology in use by the armies/societies of the time. We Ami's are also paragons of consistency when switching back and forth between millimeter and calibre designations for bore diameters. Our field guns were labeled in millimeters (at least until you get up in size to the "eight inch" howitzer) and our machine guns were designated in "caliber".

What I want from a game is consistency in accurately depicting the inconsistencies in use at the time.

Now those are two things I didn't know. Makes Todd's performance in the movie much more meaningful. Hmm...I wonder what the chances are that a British production from 1946 would be available on DVD?

My favorite scene from the Longest Day has to be the French commando attack on the casino at Quistraham (sp?). The overhead footage of the commandos moving through the town, closing on the casino, getting pinned down by German fire and the commander Kieffer making a dash across the broken canal bridge to get tank support was by far the best combat action depicted.

I don't know about a DVD but I have a Video I purchased some time ago. I presume that by now they would have migrated to DVD. It was part of the "After the Battle" series published by Rank Film in 1985. ( Boy that is a while ago. [:)] ).
