For all you Oldies fans, "Oldies Alternative" is a Internet radio station that plays tunes you don't hear much (with chart position and year) but are great...from the 50's,60's & 70's. Available here and on iTunes!

So what were the definitive songs that made up the early New Romantic/Synth Pop era? Not sure sometimes which bands were classed in the New Romantic genre as opposed to just being known for using synths and such like - but will include any songs that feature synths and drum machines in the main.

So what I am looking for is that harder edged, relatively raw early synth sound say 1980-82. Here are my ten (not in any real order) but really keen to get others input on this:

1. See You – Depeche Mode
2. Enola Gay - OMD
3. Love Action (I Believe in Love) – Human League
4. Are Friends Electric – Gary Numan
5. Wishing (If I had a Photograph of You) – Flock of Seagulls
6. Underpass – John Foxx
7. Planet Earth – Duran Duran
8. Fade to Grey - Visage
9. Tainted Love – Soft Cell
10. Vienna - Ultravox

I'm listening to the darkest Gothic Metal I can find on Spotify.

Just buried my 22 year old Rat Terrier who died yesterday :( Chewbacca's litter-mate Boba Fett, died last year and Chewie was never the same after that.

Farewell to these wonderful dogs who stood by me faithfully through some of the roughest years of my life.

While drowning my sorrows, I stumbled upon this live performance by Arthur Lee of his one chart busting single... "7 & 7 Is" one of my favorites from the '60's

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65CqDLURZrQ

I didn't realize he had died; or that his album "Forever Changes" is considered one of the greatest rock albums in history. There was a lot more to his career than I ever knew...

Rhonda, Arthur Lee & Love where so underrated! [&o] "7 and 7 is" is fantastic, the explosion and the slow blues riff at the end is classic! I got to see them live at the Whisky in Hollywood in 1968, never forget it! [:)] Here is a good compilation for Arthur Lee & Love:

8. Fade to Grey - Visage
9. Tainted Love – Soft Cell
10. Vienna - Ultravox

Well, this is well and truly my time! Being a Gary Numan fan since 1979 and still going strong (indeed, got to meet the great man himself only last year at his concert in Brisbane touring his latest album) I'm surprised that 'Cars' or 'Down In The Park' aren't on that list.

My top 10 (not in any particular order):-

1. Cars - Gary Numan
2. Are Friends Electric - Tubeway Army (Gary Numan)
3. Down In The Park - Tubeway Army (Gary Numan)
4. Fade to Grey - Visage
5. Tainted Love – Soft Cell
6. Vienna - Ultravox
7. The Things That Dreams Are Made Of - Human League
8. Don't You Want Me – Human League
9. West End Girls - Pet Shop Boys (I think mid 80's but heavy on the synths etc)
10. The Model - Kraftwerk

By the way, here's me talking music and aeroplanes with Mr Numan in 2014:-

Great post AndyG1! - not least because I was starting to think that there were no other fans of that great music period around - but also because of the passion you have for this music and the personal touch with Mr Numan.

As there are only 10 songs I have tried to keep the list to one song from any one artist, although there are songs that could have been included easily to break that. Perhaps I should make it a top 20? I just didn't want to dilute the effect.

If I had included a second Numan track it would have been Love needs no disguise or Stormtrooper in Drag.

I would never include Don't you want me? in a list like this because I specifically wanted that "raw" synth sound. I will expand this idea and create further lists from this period to include what I class as more "polished" tracks.

West End Girls is defo one of my favourites - but yes, I will include that in a later playlist - 1985 is too late for the "feel" I am trying to recreate.

The Model is a good call as Kraftwerk were such pioneers - but I want a playlist that a) takes me back to a specific time period AND b) I can play over and over and over simply because they are masterpieces. The Model just fails in the second category for me.

Ashes to Ashes was in my 10 initially, but on reflection I do not think it belongs here - despite the "New Romantic" video. It will be in a list of some sort though - such a stonkingly good track [&o]

Bette Davies Eyes is up for inclusion - but again in a different list - same goes for Girls on Film.
