I also put the Dutch Martins down on low level naval bombing on day 1 of the war, and when the Japs came knocking at Java, sent the Dutch in banzai style at 100'.

I noticed from playing Guad scenarios that B17s, even untrained, are ridiculously lethal at 100'. A handful of B17s can do serious damage to Japanese CVs skip bombing, you get more hits than you have bombers sometimes, and half a dozen to a dozen 500lbers will seriously f*ck up all but the heavily armoured CVs. They are also pretty much immune to CAP, at least they seemed to be when I did it, and they can reach out and touch CVs from a very long way. I got no issue with using mediums in such a role but using heavies to do that struck me as gamey, so common decency stops me from doing it usually.

Low level naval bombing is pretty borked IMO. But I find, same as you, that the Allies basically have no choice but to do this, you got almost no antishipping capability otherwise.

nice intel for my opponent, we´ve sent a 100 ship convoy to Milne Bay to pick up the two divisions that were sent there to take the place... they are in perfect shape and already are 50+ prepped for the next target... they´re moved back to Townsville which is the staging base for all my invasions so far and probably so for the next 6 months... I wouldn´t want to see a couple of IJN cruisers showing up tomorrow, it will take one day to load the troops and move out again...

this convoy going to Suva to pick up one of the three divisions on Fidji as I doubt the enemy will attack anyway... attacks deep into my territory are over IMO, the Japanese have to focus on the defense now... we´re going to keep some bgds at Suva and Nandi with some support troops but that´s it then... the three divs there were set to prep for different targets already months ago... the transport sank outright and the sub took a hit and a near miss...

I also put the Dutch Martins down on low level naval bombing on day 1 of the war, and when the Japs came knocking at Java, sent the Dutch in banzai style at 100'.

Results actually weren't too bad! They got massacred but did manage to score a few penetrating hits, including on CVs, which is better than they normally do. I think that'll probably be the standard move for the Dutch airforce in my games from now on.

I didn´t have much chance to experiment with my Dutch bombers as I had a day when 50+ were shot down by a handful Zeroes so I ran out of bombers quite quickly.

We´ve got the house rule about no 4Es below 10.000ft on nav attack so the B-17/B-24 won´t attack low level anyway (except USN heavy bombers). I usually have my Army 4Es on nav attack 10.000ft when I want to rest them, which usually is at least a day after they´ve flown an attack. Doing this not because I hope to achieve a hit with them (not even with nav skill 70) but to do a "bomber" sweep. If 50 heavy bombers are the first to engage a capped task force then they will whipe out most of the defending fighters and my other attack aircraft, like my dive bombers would have a field day after the heavies cleared the sky. This is only the theory of course. Unfortunetely this is aso pretty off IMO but that´s just how it works. When I´ll get my first USN heavy bomber squadrons early 43 then those crews will be trained in lownav too and they will be a major threat to the Japanese shipping I guess... having two dozen USN Liberators coming in at 2000ft, each dropping 10 x 500lb bombs will be quite dangerous for anything in the Japanese arsenal except BBs I guess.

I will have hundreds of bombers of all different types in mid 43 which I will expect to be very effective vs enemy shipping and except the divebombers, all of them will do attacks at altitudes of 1000 or 2000ft. They should be nearly as dangerous to ships as the Japanese Betty family, so as long as the Japanese can drop torps more or less everywhere (if the Japanese commander cares and thinks about) I will fly highly effective low level nav attacks. Not sure about strafing attacks with B-25s yet.

the battle at Buna is the bright side at the moment... there´s no doubt that the combat engineers were really needed and it´s only a matter of a couple of days to see the enemy at Buna being defeated... the enemy units are now reported being set to march North, but they won´t be able to move out of the hex early enough so I expect them being forced to retreat...

the first attack at Shwebo goes in and we get an amazingly good result... the troops were 100% supplied and 100% prepped while the enemy obviously prepped for another target... our losses were acceptable and the enemy has ordered his troops to march to Mandalay now, I guess they will have marched out before we are able to kick them out which would be preferrable as this would shred the enemy divs... if he the enemy can fall back into a prepared position then it will be a hard task... got my 2000 av Army in the South crossing the river near Magwe soon... we´ve then got 3000av in the North and 2000av in the South with another 800 marching through the jungle at the moment... everything is 100% supplied... [>:]

so much about the theory and how it really is in the game... it´s no problem at all to supply ten thousands av through the jungle, you just can´t supply them in a friendly base... hey, now that is working well, could be the twin of the air coordination routine... [:'(]

Entering November and the war isn´t going too bad. Losses (especially ships) haven´t been severe at all. We´ve lost the usual territory, the usual LCUs but have been in the lead for air losses for months already and have established our positions on New Guinea again while the enemy hasn´t been able to build up a complex of bases near the front yet. Indian, Australian and British troops are marching into Burma and already have attacked there succesfully. The massed Tojos in Burma are causing us headache because together with the borked "coordination" routine it´s impossible to attack a base with four dozen Tojos it seems, therefore we´re going to mainly rely on our ground offensive and play a rather conservative air war in Burma.

I´ve sent Saratoga and POW back to Cape Town where they should arrive in the next two weeks for repairs of major flt damage. I´ve also set my naval forces in Australia to do their upgrades as I´m in the process of regrouping and preparing for the next step forward, so it shouldn´t be a problem to do those 21 day upgrades. Got enough surface forces and LBA to guard my ships under upgrade but I seriously doubt the enemy would dare to attack me in Australia anyway. The IJN tried once and lost 300 carrier based ac doing so.

Sub slips beneath the waves

another bugger is down... with all the ASW fighting going on so far, I would rate a British ASW TF of four DDs being five times more effective than a comparable USN TF... Encounter dropped all her depth charges and forced the bugger to surface where the sub was hit by dozens of 4.7 inch shells. This didn´t stop the sub from firing a torpedo salvo against one of the DDs though... the sub is sunk for sure... since I´ve employed British DDs on ASW duty the numbers of enemy subs between Townsville - Port Moresby - Milne Bay have gone down dramatically...

I had 200 fighters at Milne Bay yesterday covering the loading of a big TF and Rainer didn´t miss that so he has set some Zeroes to sweep the place... it took only one day to load the TF so also the fighters were gone again today so the Zeroes swept a more or less empty base... a pity in the end because I guess with 200 fighters we could have won this encounter against 27 Zeroes... I´m not really afraid of Zeroes anyway, it´s the Tojo that is really causing us headache...

Heavy smoke from fires obscuring AMC Asaka Maru

my sneaky opponent has moved an AMC into the shipping lane to Perth but unfortunetely for him, exactly today Saratoga and POW left Perth after refuelling there and the AMC was spotted and sunk by Saratoga´s dive bombers... the AMC would have only found some minesweepers doing ASW in the area so it would probably have been fun to see the AMC attacking a bunch of minesweepers with their pop guns...

those IJN raiders don´t convince me to be really effective as raiders, I would just use them as troop transport, same as I do with the Allied AMCs. They are great to include them in amphibious TFs as they can effectively support the landings with their light cruiser sized armament... while I don´t know if you really need amphibious fire support anyway if the enemy doesn´t have dedicated CD guns...

we finally conquer Buna, 4th Division should be more or less a wreck now... have set our two divs, a HQ and three combat eng units to pursue the enemy North... we´re in no hurry to conquer the area around Lae so we´re doing this by moving our troops overland from Buna... supplying them shouldn´t be a problem and we have to do something against the enemy troops in the hex North of Buna anyway... will be interesting if they´re gonna be able to move out before we move in... our two divisions are in good shape, one of them is down to 92/100 and the other one is at 90/100. Full support and enough supply should bring most of the disablements back during the march North. Buna will be built up but won´t be one of our first line bases as it´s just to exposed on that side of the coast...

seriously, the artillery routine as it stands now is just a joke... it´s "better" [8|] than the funny nuke artillery but when I order my artillery to attack and have units being completely trashed and losing 60% of their strenght (yes, destroyed) then I wonder on what trip the devs are. I admit that it´s hard to get it right, but we´re so far off that it just hurts. Give me WITP artillery back and I stop crying but what we had pre patch and what we have now is so far off, even command & conquer would do it better... [8|]

when one side is doing a bombardment with far superior force and gets trashed on and on by "counterfire" then I wonder what has been smoked to think that this would be right... as many other people already have pointed out, it´s better not to have artillery at all now... sorry, but this is just off...

we succesfully attack at Shwebo again... I first thought this attack has cost us nothing when I saw our casualties being below 1000 but then noticed that the casualty number is totally off what really happened... [&:] we had far more casualties than the enemy so I´ve got no idea what the combat report is bringing up here... FOW is one thing but it seems it makes the combat report more or less totally useless... the enemy is trying to march out and we´re going to try to kick him out as this is the only way to trash those divisions... if we´re able to force a retreat then this could be the first step to the collapse of the Japanese defense in Burma... not to forget the 2000av I´ve got further South (crossing the river tomorrow) and the reinforcements marching in... if this Japanese Army is forced to retreat and our Army South can hold against the couple of Japanese divs in that area then Rainer will be in trouble...

we had a Catalina damaged but that´s it... halve a dozen AA units and base forces can´t put up enough defense to hurt a strike at 11.000ft...

Japanese Ships
PB Toko Maru #4, Bomb hits 6, and is sunk

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x B-26 Marauder bombing from 1000 feet
Naval Attack: 3 x 500 lb SAP Bomb

Toko Maru #4 caught transferring cargo ...

3 x 500lb bombs didn´t sink the vessel in the morning so the Marauders sortied again in the afternoon scoring a hit each... what makes me wonder is why are they armed with only 3 bombs each? Range is four, airfield size is 6, not overstacked... normal loadout is 6 x 500lb bombs so is there a special rule I´ve missed for lownav attacks using only reduced load or what? When the hit rate stays that high with reduced load then I don´t need normal load anyway but it would be nice to know why those bombers attack with only three instead of six bombs...

that one was close... would the combat engineers have been able to take down a fort level then the 3:1 would have been enough to kick the enemy out of the hex... we´re fully supplied and most of my units will attack again tomorrow, hopefully achieving the 2:1 needed to force the enemy to retreat... we will then have enough time to get back to strenght again as the enemy will have lost far more casualties in the battle for Shwebo than we did...

the number of Allied casualties is again totally off it seems... don´t know how this is calculated, we should have at least the same number of casualties showing up as the Japanese... escpecially our support squads are hit hard all the time but we took very light losses in combat squads today... I can only hope that tomorrow´s attack will be a full success and that the enemy won´t have moved out again...

YEAH! We take Shwebo and the enemy divisions are trashed... 6th Guards Division showed up with 0 assault value during the replay so I guess this unit is in a very bad shape now. I´ve said it often enough, also outside of this AAR, you can move as many units into Burma and fully supply them without any problem. IMO this move should not be possible at all and just proves how the supply routine is working. Sorry, I would like to say something different but it´s just yet another thing that is not working. No matter how many theoretical calculations one of the devs is doing in his AAR, you can move as much supply to your troops as is needed. You can´t supply them in a friendly base but you can 400 miles deep into the jungle. I wonder if the Japanese can do something against the loss of Burma now. At this date I should not be able at all to do such a move.

hey! Nothing left to take out?

This turn is just one of many examples that pisses me off on and on. In five years of playing WITP I have not seen so many stupid results as in playing AE for five months and I can only repeat myselve that I perfectly go with what a beta tester said: the airroutine is the most borked routine of all! But what gets me even more fed up are those stupid explanations about everything that is just plain wrong and has nothing to do with reality but are only coming out of the mouth of the super ego called air team leader. I´m glad I had all those fighters on different altitudes, otherwise someone would come up with the advise: no wonder, you´re doing it wrong, you need layered Cap. [8|]

The devs haven´t been paid? Heck, I´ve spent 60 bucks for this game and all I can say is that I hope that at least some of them will never get a single cent of my money. Some of them definetely deserve to be paid, but when I look at the airroutine and the ego on the forum then I only get sick! But hey, it´s been a long time since he has fired up the game the last time. Ridicoulos from A to Z.

42:5 for the Japanese being totally outnumbered. My pilots are all skill 70. Such a result would have never happened in real life but they happen in this broken piece of BS all the time. On and on and on loopsided results. And when I look at the threads on the main forum then it only makes me sick that WITP was "upgraded" with some nice features, a great map, OOB and a perfectly working wide screen mode but also made a lot of the most important routines to something I only call BS! BS par excellence.
No surprise the development was nothing but bitching around, quit and come back.

I´m still pissed by last turn as I just can´t believe that the air routine constantly brings up such BS [:@] so I´m not really spending a lot of time doing my turns at the moment. Amazingly enough that a computer game is frustrating me, guess PBEM is the factor here.

amazingly enough, my PM bombers get escorts... none of my Army fighters are set to the same alt or the same HQ but they escort the bombers... got four USMC fighter squadrons set to the same alt and escort but of course none is flying at any time... I hate the air routines as they´re just borked...

Aircraft Attacking:
8 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 18in Type 91 Torpedo

that was a surprising one, well done! We were lucky that the Betties focused on only two ships scoring three hits on one of the small transports... strike was coming from Munda, don´t have fighters at Milne Bay as they would just get shredded at 10:1 or higher by the UBER fighters of the Japanese... the fact that all my fighters are flown by 70 skilled pilots doesn´t help at all as could be seen last turn... give me WITP´s results please as they were spot on compared to the stupid AE loops all the time...

Only me that finds this strange???
I will admit that my brain is completely worn out today, but this seems wrong to me...

note that the fort at the beginning of the battle was four and engineers took down a fort level already before getting the adjusted av. When the engineers take a fort down then a 2:1 (or better) doesn´t take down another fort level. If the engineers fail to reduce the forts then a 2:1 (or better) in a deliberate attack takes down one fort level. If you do a shock attack and you get a 4:1 for example then you take down the forts by 3 levels. IIRC it has always been like this also in WITP.

Yes, Burma sucks totally. It is not really possible IRL for Allies to supply such masssive army there.

the supply routine as it is now really is borked and while it really harms you in China where you can´t supply your units at all when they´re sitting in base hexes (supply only available outside) it´s an advantage for the Allied in Burma for example when they can just move through the jungle while being fully supplied. I neither like the China situation nor the situation in Burma.
