RE: August 8, 1945 - Palembang - what happened here?

Thanks for the ideas everyone.

I never really have paid that much attention at high fort levels, because it is such a rare occurrence. When levels get lower, I know you can bag more than one level in a day.

You could very well be right that a level 7-9 will never reduce more than one level at a time. I will keep my eyes peeled.

Just got my turn. I will post after I play it.

I don't understand how you could expect two levels of fort reductions at the 8 and 7 levels. Those are pretty tough forts!
For starters, your combat engineers will be pretty fatigued from the first fort level drop, so getting a double level drop would be pretty amazing (to me, at least.)

I think it highly unlikely the forts were built up to L9 in one turn - you would have to load up every engineer in the game to achieve that kind of construction, and concrete takes more than a day to harden!

Have you ever achieved two levels of reduction on high level forts before? I have never seen it in my own games or other AARs, that I recall.

I don't think anyone is claiming you can't reduce a level 9 for to level 7. Rather, we were responding to your statement that you simply assumed that you would get 2 levels of fort reduction. The point being it is unreasonable to expect that you would get 2 levels of fort reduction each time; not that it can't happen. As I mentioned, the fort reductions are just a dice roll.

That being said, there very well could be a cap on how many levels of fort you can reduce. Has anyone ever done 3 levels of fort reduction in one turn?

I have personal experience reducing 3 levels with strong odds, so I am confident that it is possible under certain circumstances. But probably not when the fort is 6 - 9, because no else has experienced it.

Thanks for the help.

This past turn didnt have surprises. Majuro fell, but I didn't have enough supply on hand to fight at Palembang. Invasions are headed to Namlea and Bara near Ambon - and should arrive in a couple turns. Air reduction efforts began at Jaluit. It is lightly held and should be ready to invade in three or so days.

Subs - 3 attacks
unsuccessful against APD near Borneo, sub not damaged
unsuccessful against DD near Iwo Jima, sub not damaged
AK holed hear Guam, sub heavily damaged

Air attacks: reductions continuing
Tarawa, Ambon, Kusaie, Ternate, Dili

ground support
Damar and Dili

ground attacks
Damar - enenmy not eliminated
Majuro - enemy eliminated and base taken

The Reds make their first crossing into Manchukuo at 104.30 in the western most reaches of the empire. it is the leading edge of a massive sword headed towards Hailar. Based on speed of this mech and armor, it might be there in 2 days.

Ruskies got some mojo...

INTERESTING - I am actually playing that game PBEM also and am ruskies. Not doing an AAR though. I am playing my first game and am still learning mechanics. it is Jan 43, and the ruskies are active trying to get back Leningrad and around Sevestapol.

Germans are tough opponents. That first year was a barn burner.

I am planning on doing WITW at a point in the future.

Palembang is proving to be quite tough to take. The enemy slipped in one last unit that was protecting the true southern approaches to Palembang (and no longer needs to). I reduced the fort more level, but several of my units are at red level supply and cannot attack again this turn. I also am reducing the last force in true western Sumatra true west of Medan. The wooded rough makes a force with basically no AV fight like a division. Oh well.

Inavasion of Manlea (76.108) began last turn. enemy has token forces only, and his fleet does not appear interested in a tango. Aside - I only have 7 CV in the area, so it is a ripe location for him to pounce on a small portion of the allied carrier fleet. time will tell if he decides to do that.

SUBS
no attacks

My Airfield attacks
Tarawa, Kusai, Ternate, and Ambon

Port attacks
Jaluit - 32 port supply hits from port attacks from the CV's. Gotta love allied late war power. One turn of ground attack, and then I will invade.

ground support
Damar
Near Medan

ground attacks
Damar - enemy not eliminated
Palembang - fort reduced to 6
True west of Medan 1-1 attack severely hurts enemy force

What do you think the average supply loss is from a post / airfield supply hit. I have always thought it was about 3000, but I am curious if anyone else has another number in their head.

I remember seeing some discussion on this topic somewhere - might have been the War Room forum.
The number is variable based on a die roll and the "effect" of the weapon used. There might even be an adjustment for fort levels or terrain. 3000 sounds pretty high to me. My memory is not great but around 500 per hit seems to have been the discussion, for hits from 500 lb. bombs. Your SBDs would drop 1000 ponders, but the Helldiver hits would be a mixture of 1000 and 250 lb. bombs.

As BBfanboy points out it's dependent on the bomb dropped and it's a percentage of the total supply at a base as well. You can wipe 3000 in a day with multiple hits, but not with one hit. It's also the AA shooting that causes a supply drop, so even when you're not hitting you're killing supply if he's shooting back at you.

RE: August 11, 1945 - Kamikaze Activation

Post by topeverest »

The enemy has notified me that Kamikaze's finally activated. It has to be the Ruskies, because I have not otherwise been 15 hexes from Siagon, Takao, or Tokyo. It has to be a record for the latest they have been activated. But in my defense, we are paying a scenario where empire naval power is tripled, and the allies are not allowed to strategic bombard and no allied long leap invasions.

Still it has been a whole stack of fun -

the first ruskie air attacks today. imminent combat in eastern and western Manchukuo. Invasion of Jaluit occurring this turn. no empire bases fell this turn, but several are on the docket. So far the enemy hasn't taken up my offer for naval combat in the DEI with that small exposed portion of the American fleet.

Bombardments
2 separate BB bombardments of Tarawa

Subs -
AK hit near Tokyo bay, sub lost
PB hit near Tokyo bay same hex (I use two subs per convoy), sub clean away
coastal Tanker hit near Okinawa, sub cleanly away

Airfield attacks
Tarawa, Kusai, ternate, ambon

ground support
Damar, west of Medan, and Manlea

ground attacks
west of medan - successful, enemy pushed back
