September 21, 1943.
Daily air battles continue around the Taberfane region while the Japanese and Allied fleets continue to stare at each other. Most of the air battles feature heavier Japanese losses, but most are over Japanese territory so we're probably about even on pilot losses.
Meanwhile, a raid by some Kates around Lae in Eastern New Guinea achieved success, planting bombs into 3x large APAs. Only one is listed as sunk, but I'm guessing 4x 250 kg bombs and heavy fires/damage should probably be enough to get all three.

Battles around Taberfane continue. The Allied fleet is getting a bit larger and more aggressive.
Allied CV aircraft launched a series of attacks on some Japanese picket DDs. For the loss of over 50 aircraft, only 1x 1000 lb bomb was planted on a DD. Luckily, the damage was tolerable and the destroyer will likely survive.
Battles around Taberfane continue. The Allied fleet is getting a bit larger and more aggressive.

October 10, 1943.
It's been a busy week around Taberfane.
The Allied CVs were deployed forward a few days ago so the KB came down to meet them. We set up a perfect 7-hex strike along with land based air, but then... STORMS. Bad weather prevented airstrikes the entire day to/from the KB. The land based air went in without the KB strikes and got badly chewed up by the Allied Death Star. So instead of a really good result, we had a really bad result, all due to weather. What could have been a titanic carrier clash fizzled into mist.
The next day, the Allied fleet withdrew from Taberfane and the Japanese fleet came in to bombard... which didn't really go very well. We sank a few Allied DDs, but three Japanese destroyers hit mines and promptly sank and the Yamato ate two torpedoes from PT boats. Those PTs are possibly the most effective weapon in the Allied arsenal. Yamato should survive but what a terrible waste.
Now, it looks like the situation has returned to the status quo, with the Japanese and Allied fleets not daring to leave their own air cover to attack the enemy. We'll see how the situation develops.

His subs are really starting to sting. He's recently torpedoed 2 aircraft carriers, a battleship, and a cruiser, in addition to several tankers and over a dozen cargo ships. None of the warships sank but the damage is annoying.
On the other hand, a lot of Allied subs are listed as recently sunk... in fact, more Allied subs have so far been sunk than were historically lost in the entire Pacific war.

Kesselschlacht for both sides - probably more for the Japanese, unfortunately. This is our Guadalcanal.
To be honest, it's a pretty decent place for you to fight. Nice and close to the DEI fuel and supply, and you've Makassar, Kendrai and Manadno to backstop your air efforts.
Looking at your dispositions, building up around Biak is the right move to make, but I'd think about how you can put pressure on the Allies further back from the frontline. I'd look at building up Hansa Bay to put pressure on Merakue and the Allied shipping lanes through the Torres Strait.
Hansa can go right up to level 9, and is a real nuisance to deal with if the Allies are on the wrong side of New Guinea, and if the Allies are at Taberfane, then strikes can come from a whole 270 degree arc...

Yes, it's not really a terrible region to defend. Way better than the Solomons for proximity to supply/fuel and also more important. I see the future as a slow slog match through the DEI, which the Allies will eventually win but I bet we'll be able to hold out for quite a whole.
Unfortunately, I've now lost Buna and most stuff East of New Guinea except for Rabaul itself. He was doing a really good job protecting his supply line through the Torres strait anyway - not really sure there were many opportunities there.

Maybe lay some minefields using subs.
From the back side of New Guinea, if you have Naval Search, then maybe fighter bombers and torpedo bombers flying at 100 feet or 1000 feet. They might be able to attack before his CAP can react.

It's been a busy week in both the game and also in real life, so I haven't had a chance to post, but there was a big battle at Taberfane.

It was such a busy turn that I'll just post elements of the combat report with comments because witpqs does a great job with that:
October 17, 1943:
The Japanese fleet moves to forward positions, hoping the Allied fleet would also come forward and offer battle. We'd been playing cat & mouse for months, with the Allied fleet dashing forward to provide CAP or supply to Taberfane, and the Japanese fleet occasionally coming forward but often holding back. Neither side wanted to engage without support from their own land-based aircraft.
First a minor destroyer picket skirmish:

Then, the Allied plan is revealed. A long series of night attacks from the Allied carriers. I think he was trying to catch the Japanese fleet without night CAP and sneak through for a few lucky hits. Luckily this didn't work all that well (though it was still a bit of a nail biter and a few hits were scored):
Then Allied destroyers finish off a Japanese picket and run from Japanese heavies:
And get the better of some more pickets and then run away again:
And then, oof, this happened:
Shinano was in trouble because she'd already eaten a torpedo from another sub earlier but I decided to keep her in action nonetheless. It was starting out as a really bad day.
Then the usual Allied bombardment which happens somewhere almost every day:
But then the Kido Butai and Japanese land-based air forces finished sipping their morning sake and got to work:
Ok so that wasn't great, most of the strike lost without a single bomber getting through. But the first Kido Butai strike was perfectly coordinated:
A heavy blow to the Allied CVEs at a high cost in Japanese pilots and planes, but unfortunately the strike missed most of the fleet carriers. And a few laggards came in but got badly chewed up without making a dent:
That could have been the end of it, trading a bunch of Japanese planes and pilots for a few lost CVEs. While I was contemplating if the result was even worth the cost, Admiral Ozawa was giving a rousing speech to his air group commanders, extoling them to launch a second strike before the main Allied fleet could escape. Japanese pilots swallowed one last round of sake and took to the air in pursuit of the retreating Allied fleet:

That could have been the end of it, trading a bunch of Japanese planes and pilots for a few lost CVEs. While I was contemplating if the result was even worth the cost, Admiral Ozawa was giving a rousing speech to his air group commanders, extoling them to launch a second strike before the main Allied fleet could escape. Japanese pilots swallowed one last round of sake and took to the air in pursuit of the retreating Allied fleet:

The cost was high, with around 1,000 Japanese planes lost and hundreds of pilots but clearly the results were well worth it.

The next day, Ozawa contemplated pursuit but chose to fall back to friendly air cover because he didn't want to risk entering the Allied land-based air and submarine zone of death and KB air groups were heavily depleted.
It's hard to say how many Allied ships actually went down. It's been about a few days since the battle, and every day we get reports of a ship or two sinking, either succumbing to their wounds or simply FOW.
Reports say that 5 Allied CVs, 2 CVLs, and 7 CVEs went down, plus BB South Dakota and some CLs and DDs. I think some of those CVs may survive because Allied damage control is so darned good. My best guess at actual losses are:
CV Saratoga (7 torpedo hits, 4 from aircraft and 3 after by sub)
CV Lexington (6 bomb hits, 2 torpedo hits)
CV Wasp (2 bomb hits, 3 torpedo hits, and she's a bit more fragile)
Possibly one but not all of: Hornet (2B/2T), Enterprise (2B/1T), Manhattan (4B/2T), Essex (2B/1T), or New England (4B)
Definitely not Yorktown (only 1 bomb hit)
Possibly up to 2-3xCVL (watched Independence sink, Princeton took 5B/1T though some bombs didn't penetrate, Belleau Wood took 2B/1T)
8x CVE (8 were hit with more than 1 bomb/torpedo and they're highly flammable)

It's hard to say how many Allied ships actually went down. It's been about a few days since the battle, and every day we get reports of a ship or two sinking, either succumbing to their wounds or simply FOW.

All in all, a wonderful result for the Kudo Butai. I think the Allies will still win the war due to crushingly powerful 1945 reinforcements, but no doubt this will set back their advance.
This will be an interesting game that I think will go to 1946. I expect in the long run for the Allies to eventually get to Japan's doorstep but the game should come down to the wire. Richard has confirmed that he thinks this will slow him down but he's still eager to persevere and play on.

Go back to a previous save and compare the ship sunk numbers and points. Tracker should help with this if you have it running.
Consider night bombing ports within range plus mining, whether by air or sub. Fast bombardment missions could also help if they can get through and not too bogged down by enemy SCTFs and PT screens. Even minisubs from Dobo to Taberfane.

I'm trying a new tactic to clear out his PT boats... George straffing runs. We hit them with a bunch of 20 mm cannon shots, but who know if this actually does anything? I don't get reports of them sinking. How many cannon hits does it take to sink a PT boat?

And his mines around Taberfane keep sinking my destroyers. How do we clear them out when they're protected by his PT boats so that we can safely bombard? The PT/mine combination is cheap but deadly effective.
