Centuur probably hasn't jumped in yet only because the others are beating him to posting.

You don't know why I didn't jump in on this discussion? That's very strange, because a lot of persons here are trying to get the point accross...

With all respect, I don't like the way you behave on this forum. You won't like this, but I don't care anymore...

I think a lot of the rancor can be dissipated if you all simply realize you are operating at cross purposes. Extraneous seems to be interested in developing an appealing computer version of the World in Flames game. Steve is interested in filling his remaining golden years with a task that is structured if not purposeful or with resolution, like bird watching. Everyone else is an enabler of Steve.

Now that I have illuminated you is it not easier to understand your differing points of view?

Tut tut Mr C [:-] You were so busy "illuminating" everyone else and the roles they play [8|] you forgot to add your own contribution to this saga i.e. The bad smell that hangs around, everyone detests, but that just won't go away....

Oh well, seems we all have our part to play.

I also underwent testing for exposure to Agent Orange. None are mentally debilitating and my medicine doesn't affect me mentally. Uf you dont thin is was interviewed and evaluated for possible mental problem you are bigger fools than I think you are.

Neilster: Sarcasm is wasted on you. When did your sense if humor die anyway? Was it because one of your ancestors was one of the Pommy Guards in OZ?

Lets say there are four of you and one of me (80% vs. 20%). That means if this is our second argument then statistically there is a 32% chance I am right and a 0.4% chance I was right before and you all wouldn't admit it

Neilster I do apologize I should not have attacked you in such a way. It was rude of me and very below the belt.

I don't have it but someone should be able to help you out. If France survives longer than historically then some cool units can be built. From memory they include armoured corps and aircraft carriers, among other things.

Difficult to say with land units because of course they are not really historical, but the French do get some sexy mechanised and armoured corps as the game develops and if they stay around.

Some aircraft are not "what if" but in terms of numbers probably are e.g. the Arsenal VG-33 I do not believe was produced and sent to frontline units in any great numbers, but the French player does have a VG-33 counter.

Ships I can be a little more helpful on [:)]

The French player can build:

The two planned battleships Gascogne and Clemenceau (in addition to finishing Jean Bart and Richelieu)

She can build the two planned fleet carriers Joffre and Painleve + two "what if" light carriers Suchet and Mareschal Ney. She can also build a "what if" fleet carrier St Cyr.

She can build three planned C5 Heavy cruisers named Maroc, Tunis and Indo Chine (the naming no doubt based on Algerie). There was also a possible St. Louis-class with names touted such as Saint Louis, Henri IV, Charlemagne, Brennus, Charles Martel and Vercengetorix. Either way, the French can build just three extra heavy cruisers.

Finally she can build the three light cruisers of the De Grasse-Class and can convert two of these, Guichen and De Grasse, into light carriers instead. Chateaurenault can only be built as a light cruiser.

The Allies are The House in World in Flames. Excessive betting against them on the first two turns is poor strategy.

brian brian nails it. This should be in the "verbiage" starting RAW8.

let's say the Italians break down their MTN corps at set-up and have 3 divisions stacked with their fleet in La Spezia. A decent landing force could appear anywhere in the Mediterranean and the Allies need to be on high alert.

Where should the French deploy their INF in Algeria - covering the capital - the city of Algiers, or the very useful-to-the-Axis base at Oran?

Or should they leave the defense of Syria to the TERRitorial unit alone and move their INF from there over to Algeria to cover both? What if Germany is deployed for a France First on the western front? Bring the Syrian INF home for extra help there?

If the Allies (particularly the French) commit to having a reaction force that can crush an invading division (or two) that lands in Oran, I would guess Algiers.

On the one hand, Algiers can't be invaded. On the other hand, if a unit sets up in or next to Oran, it has a hard time walking to Algiers, and if the Italians get in there they are much harder to dislodge.

By contrast, a unit sitting in Algiers can respond to Oran and assist in a counterattack, pretty much straightaway.

But one's mileage may vary.

having a reaction force

OK, that just advanced my 1939 Allied thinking in a major way, in a general sense. I think my usual UK set-up might change a little.

I generally set up the French TRS in Syria.

In the case of Algieria though, things are sticky. Algiers itself can't be invaded. I had been looking at the fact that the rail line to it can be blocked by an invasion west of the city. So presuming an Italian landing on Impulse #3, the Allies can land a unit in Algiers from the sea. The problem is they may have to fight through Italian forces at sea in the West Med, possibly including a NAV in 4 becomes 5 box. So CV cover will be needed. A bit tricky if 'reaction' means Combined impulses for the Allies.

Algiers is nice to have for the Axis for sure. But it puts them a longer way from Oran, and Oran is pretty important to the CW = they will set up a front in NW Algeria.

If the Italians land in Oran itself, an Allied reaction force can't do much unless it includes an HQ - unlikely unless the CW set up a TRS in Egypt. By the time the CW could march up and counterattack Oran, things like an Italian HQ-A and a MECH could be sitting there, as they couldn't sail straight into Algiers until the French march out. The 2 French INF, one from Syria and one in Algeria, could do the job though. 3 defense vs anywhere from 7 to 11 attack with large variables on shore bombardment available depending on results at sea.

It is coming back to me now finally. I set up the INF in Algeria in the clear hex east of Oran, covering Oran and another landing hex with ZoCs at least. The Italians could get between that unit and Algiers but could not take Algiers before an Allied impulse, nor land in Oran for free.
