The sky over India turns red...

Post by Nemo121 »

The month ended with a BIG bang. We're up to May 1st and all I can say at this stage is that between the two of us the next 6 days of combat see over 1200 planes being destroyed. We've obviously both been saving up for the big fight over Karachi. Unfortunately Trey's supply lines are better and my forces come off the worse for wear. Overall though this is balanced by developments elsewhere.

Ah, here we go. 257 heavy bombers strike my forces a devastating blow. The number of planes destroyed is quite low as most of my planes are already on their way to Karachi intending to deliver the same kind of devastation to their airfields. Unfortunately the real problem is that my airfield at Bombay is almost completely closed by this attack and there seems to be little chance of getting my planes off the ground and into safer airfields.

Two medium-experience Oscar Sentai and two elite Zero Daitai conduct a sweep over Bombay to prepare the way for my main bomber raid. At the cost of 53 Oscars and 10 Zeroes they shoot down 88 defending enemy fighters including the majority of the defending Hurricanes. This should give my main raid a significantly improved chance of making it through.

Allied aircraft
Lysander I x 8
Mohawk IV x 4
Hurricane II x 19
P-40E Warhawk x 17

They are opposed by the 48 enemy fighters which can be scrambled after the devastation of the morning's fighter sweep. In intense aerial combat the enemy CAP is destroyed almost to the man and the bombers range over the airfield. Intense FlAK sends 9 bombers and a photo-reconnaissance plane spiralling downward in flames but 198 bombs land within the airfield perimeter and destroy many of the enemy's grounded planes. In return for the loss of 15 planes the Japanese destroy 98 enemy airplanes either in the air or on the ground. Unfortunately no enemy bombers are destroyed as they are all currently in the air laying waste to Bombay.

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 5 destroyed

A very desperate assault indeed.

Below you can see a picture detailing some of the losses today. The main information to draw from this screenshot is that the Hurricane II losses have been extremely high. I think the British get something like 40 a month. They also get several squadrons as reinforcements but even accounting for the 200 they've received as replacements and the others they have received as reinforcement the loss of 335 planes must leave them scraping the bottom of the battle. The same goes for the Lysander and P-40s.

I, currently, have 100 Oscars and 60 or so Zeroes in reserve. In addition the A6M3 has finally begun production. It should be enough BUT when I view the next turn I note that Bombay has been completely destroyed and is unfit for use. With a large number of damaged planes there and no ability to mount an effective CAP it looks like my fighter and bomber reserves are about to be used to replace massive losses to the unit components I cannot evacuate today.

This couldn't have come at a worse time really as, in order to help lessen the need for Nakajimas I have recently stopped Helen production and switched back to producing Sallies. Essentially my forces are stretched tight and the loss of the 200 planes trapped at Bombay is going to eat up the reserves I required for a succesful air campaign over Karachi. I'm going to have to withdraw and come back again in a couple of weeks.

This also increases my need for a succesful carrier action in order to counterbalance this psychological lift for Trey. I have docked both CV TFs at Midway, spent the necessary PP to re-assign daitai and re-assigned all daitai to their original ships. In addition I have re-organised my carriers into three TFs. Each comprises 2 to 3 CVs, a CVL, a BB or CS, a CA and 5 to 6 DDs. Most of my CVs, BBs and CAs have system damage in the low tens due to the extensive use of full speed movement over the past few months. My CVLs are, generally speaking, in worse shape than my CVs but I daren't take the time to repair. I must have a victory to counter-point the proceedings at Bombay.

My 7 CVs, 3 CVLs,1 CS, 2 BBs, 3 CAs and 15 or 16 DDs set sail from Midway with an AO in tow as does the invasion convoy carrying the 35th Mixed Brigade. It appears that there is an extremely strong submarine cordon between French Frigate Shoals and Midway. At least a half-dozen submarines have been spotted so my TFs will use avoidant routing by moving directly east and only moving south when they are between the allied submarine cordon and the American CVs. While this increases the danger to my cripples manyfold once the battle is over I intend to cover the cripples by putting my surviving strike aircraft on ASW patrol once the battle is over. That should net quite a return and give my cripples some breathing space.

It looks like I'm facing 5 or 6 US CVs ( I forget how many they have at this stage of the war... The last time Trey sortied them he sortied in 3 distinct TFs so I am assuming I am facing 3 TFs each comprising 2 CVs. I have organised my force to send in a single massive strike. My hope is to ensure the sinking of two American CVs by hitting one TF with my entire strike group ( almost 300 dive and torpedo-bombers) instead of achieving less decisive results by spreading my strike between several TFs.

A DD flotilla does some good work at Derby. One could argue that it should have sunk more of the Allied merchant ships ( and I certainly would argue that) but at least 1 PG, 1 MSW, 2 tankers and 1 AP are confirmed sunk later on in the day. That's not a bad haul even though it should have been better.

This was a gamble. I gambled that Ahmadabad would stay open for another day and that just maybe another strike on Karachi could cause enough damage to ground enemy bombers for a day and give me time to repair Bombay and fly in more fighter for CAP... I don't think it has worked though. On the other hand an exchange rate of 19 for 42 isn't too bad. Not good enough given what just happened at Bombay but it'll help a little. The enemy fighter forces appear to have been battered into submission over the last two days. Now if I can only get to grips with the bombers I should do OK.

Another nasty turn... On the other side of the world the American CV TF appears to be hanging out south-east of French Frigate Shoals. I am wary of it suddenly sprinting into TBD range and also still haven't gotten the movement ranges of my TFs worked out so I'm advancing at no more than 3 hexes per day. Reaction is turned down to zero hexes. I don't want them to react toward the enemy. If nothing much changes I plan to bring my carriers to within 4 hexes of the enemy CV TFs. If they react toward me I will still be 3 hexes from them and safe from their Devastators. CAP is set at 70% and every strike group is fully rested, set to naval strike with 0% search. The 50+ Alfs I am taking with me aboard my CS, the BBs and CAs will do my scouting job for me.

I do not know about WITP, but in UV, sticking a CS in a CV fleet works wonders for spotting. And every now and then (especially mid ocean or near your coasts) you can surprise an enemy CV fleet. The bigger thing though is it pretty much prevents an enemy CV from launching a morning attack that you can not respond to (at least from what I have seen in UV, I make no such comments about WITP as my experience is limited).

political and strategic mistakes live forever". The authors were refering to Japan but the same could be said of the US misadventure in Iraq

Below you can see the situation around French Frigate Shoals. Some American shipping is dropping off supplies or reinforcements to the atoll under cover of the three American CV TFs 180 miles away. Trey has positioned them so that any attempt to engage them will have to take place under cover of his own LBA... Well, that's a challenge I'll accept so long as I can lure him 1 or 2 hexes farther westward so my own Bettys and Nells can engage. I refuse to sprint in as I'm not very sure of carrier combat yet. This will only be my 3rd carrier vs carrier battle in WiTP so I have to be very careful. I'll keep advancing at 180 to 240 miles per day and just see how things go. So far I haven't been spotted.

In keeping with my new SOP for carrier action near a land base tomorrow I will sweep French Frigate Shoals clear of fighter cover and shipping preparatory to moving in close to the American carriers on the 28th. In preparation for this my ready reserves ( two Zero daitai and some Val and Kate units) on Midway are stood down so as to be as little fatigued as possible when called upon to stage into my CV fleet to replace losses.

Almost nothing is left at Ahmadabad for these bombers to destroy. The damage on the ground is being contained and once my fighter forces have recouped their losses it will be possible to stage them into Ahmadabad and have another shot at withstanding the enemy four-engined bomber menace. My AAA units and air HQ are being concentrated here and I'll risk it all on a throw of the dice here in a fortnight's time.

If things continue on their current track we will have our first carrier battle tomorrow. My ships are ordered to move to within 4 hexes of the Allied CVs. This is within range of the American LBA operating from Pearl Harbour but it is a risk I'm willing to take since I expect any American reaction to draw them 1 hex closer to my forces and well within range of the Bettys and Nells operating out of Midway and Johnston.

I think I've done everything to load the dice in my favour for this carrier battle ( multiple Mavis and Emily Chutai are set for naval search and spot the American CVs every day, a sub is ordered to be in the same hex as the American CVs tomorrow and I have a large number of Alf floatplanes carrying out recon ahead of my CVs. In addition I will have a large number of Ops Points left after my three hexes of movement and should be able to launch an overwhelming strike.

I don't doubt my ability to destroy one of the American TFs. My worry is the cost of it. I expect to lose a CVL and have heavy damage to a CV. Anything less would be a real victory as those SBDs are just insanely accurate and always seem to get through and hit my carriers. If even one is launched I would be willing to bet it would not only evade my CAP but get a magazine or fuel hit on my carriers. In anticipation of some sneaky air tasking on Trey's part I've assigned my CAP every 2,000 to 4,000 feet from 6,000 to 30,000 feet. No matter what altitude he comes in at he should run straight into a daitai.

A small portion of the surface raiding force I've sent to Koepang for future raids on Derby gets attacked by Allied bombers. It appears that my actions around Derby are drawing increasing numbers of enemy bombers westward. Today my recon showed slightly over 100 Allied bombers at Derby.

And the carrier battle is joined. My forces moved to within 4 hexes of the American CVs. Out of the 3 American TFs spotted in the original hex two appear to have reacted toward my carriers with 1 staying behind. So far so good.

The Allied strike comes in first and it is massive but poorly co-ordinated. In all 28 F4F-4s and 174 Dauntlesses attack my TFs. Only the first strike is decently escorted with the one strike completely unescorted and two others escorted by less than ten fighters each. My Zeroes have a field day.

This strike is destroyed in its entirety. I think that given the fact that the Zeroes outnumber this strike by almost 3:1 and the fact that the escorts are so paltry this result is fairly defendable.

This is a weird combat result. No Dauntlesses were shown diving on the carrier and the combatreport showed no Dauntless diving to 2000 feet to drop bombs yet Soryu is listed as being hit. When I checked the carriers damage it was, indeed, hit as it had sys damage in the mid-20s and some very light flooding and fires. Another bug then.

The strikes in red actually attacked something. All of the strikes afterward are completely illusionary as in-game they were noted to be unable to locate the targets ( because the Enterprise and Saratoga had already sunk). The 2/3rds of planes which had made it this far and attacked after the two CVs were sunk didn't attack the other CV TF in the hex ( known game design issue) NOR did they attack the enemy CAs and CL escorting the two carriers once the carriers were sunk ( they did attack them while the carriers were still on the surface but once the first element was noted as being unable to find the target no further elements attacked anything). Crazy bug!

So, the first carrier battle ends with a pretty decisive Japanese victory. One CVL is badly damaged but should survive while the Junyo is lightly damaged ( mid-20s sys damage). My carrier air arm is also somewhat depleted but this is more than compensated for by the loss of two American carriers.

I think this leaves the Americans with only 3 or 4 American carriers in the Pacific and I doubt if he will be willing to risk them after seeing the drubbing he got in this battle. In the meantime another CV joins my forces in 12 days and the Yamato will launch in mid-April. Once this is done the amount of shipping points freed will allow me to accelerate the Shinano and then with all of my CVs accelerated I can begin looking into accelerating my submarines and escort ships in time for the battles of mid-43. Does anyone know if auxiliaries ( PGs etc) come out of the merchant shipping pool or the naval shipping pool ?

Below you can see a list of losses today...

He just could not be careful with those US CV as I expected. Congratulations Nemo! I think that pretty much secured an operational freedom for the Japanese navy until late 1943!

So, with a steady force of 8 CVs and 2 CVLs ready for combat and only 3 American CVs ( I checked Bodhi's utility and it looks like the Americans won't have another carrier until mid-July) facing them I think I'm at the stage where I can think about splitting KB and still being able to defeat the Americans in the Pacific.

I am thinking of leaving my smaller CVs ( the 53 and 63 aircraft types ) and both combat-worthy CVLs in the Pacific while taking my larger main fleet carriers ( the 4 x 73 aircraft types) to Australia and New Zealand...

That would give me roughly 300 aircraft in the fleet despatched to Australia/New Zealand with another 300 or so in the fleet kept in the Pacific ( 2 x 53 plane carriers, 2 x 63 plane carriers and 2 x CVLs operating in two TFs). I would, obviously, be relying on my naval air to make up the difference if the 3 remaining US CVs in the Pacific put to sea to challenge me but I think that given the strength of my land-based naval bomber force,  the fact that I don't need to operate my carriers outside of the range of my own land-based naval air AND, perhaps most importantly, that psychologically Trey is now primed to view almost anything he tries as a potential disaster... which will tend to push him into more risk-averse decisisions... it should be possible to maintain strategic and operational control of the area without actually having a highly favourable correlation of forces.

Any feedback on the feasability of this is welcome as I'm a total newbie when it comes to carrier combat and really think I have to stack everything in my favour if I'm to have any chance of success in carrier clashes.

One other bug: how did you manage to shoot down 15 P-40's during your CV strike, when only one was on CAP?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

I just presumed that the erroneous report was the one which showed only 1 on CAP. I remember the combat replay showing 15 in the air... I figured it was just a bit of FOW in operation.

Yes, I asked Trey what he was thinking by keeping the CVs there and he told me that he was using LRCAP from his Hawaiian bases and French Frigate Shoals to augment his carrier's CAP and was hoping that, combined with his advantage in AAA, would be enough to blunt my KB strikes. He has also based an unholy number of four-engined bombers at the Hawaiian Islands and had figured out that even at a range of 5 hexes from his carriers I would be within normal strike range for B-17s and LB-30s. He was right in this. I think they didn't fly because my CAP was so effective against his SBDs and F4F-4s.

So, in short, he came up with a good plan BUT I think that his mistake was to use the carrier's in an operationally defensive manner. I certainly intend to use my carriers in strategically defensive ways but would always try to use them offensively on the operational level. Once they lose the power of manoeuvre and unpredictability they are much easier prey ( as I have shown).

Carrier Combat

Post by Capt. Harlock »

Poor Trey. IMHO he would have done better if he could have sent in the 4e bombers first to attrit the Japanese CAP. (I used the tactic waaaay back in the days of Grigsby's "Guadalcanal Campaign".) Granted there would have been heavy losses of the 4e bombers, but land-based aircraft can be re-stocked faster than those deployed on CV's.

LRcap at distance bigger than 1 hex is highly noneffective  - he would do much better puting all fighters on escort and hoping for one strong LBA strike

Dont forget that in this game losing a CV is not a tragedy for Allied player at all. They are going to being endlessly replaced, no matter how many they will loose. Kind of "unlimited US industry" toggled on :)

Nemo, what are you going to do now? Pursuit or retreat? Are your airgroups badly mauled?

I see over the past few days 49 Zeros, 26 Vals and 45 Kates downed. Not bad, but some of those pilots are irreplaceable.

it is not that bad Mike
in my last battle i lost almost 300 planes from KB
and land based groups helped me to replenish about 70 % of losses
pursuit is important
you have easiest kills
and more or less - he already paid for this privilage

I have about 60 Vals and 80 Kates in "reserve" with pilots in the 80 Exp+ range at present so my losses can be replaced although, obviously, they aren't as experienced as the pilots they are replacing. Close but not quite as good.

As to my future plans... Well, it is essential to follow through. The 35th Brigade is combat-loaded at Midway and has been prepping for French Frigate Shoals for a little while so it will land at French Frigate Shoals in order to test my (hopefully) improved understanding of the requirements of amphibious landings. If this goes well then I'll be diverting Brigades from my other nodal points to assault the American-held bases elsewhere in the Pacific.

I won't be following his carriers since that would risk strong four-engined bomber strikes and with his carrier fleet reduced to 3 CVs until July I don't NEED to take major risks to keep the strategic initiative in this theatre. Losing a few carriers to heavy damage would lose this ability and would probably result in no gain. His carriers can simply dash to PH tomorrow ( they are only 7 hexes from Pearl). I won't be able to destroy them cheaply once they do that since any strike would have to occur within range of every airfield in the Hawaiian island complex.

Great job Nemo.

Unless the Allied player can guarantee overwhelming force, there's really no point for him to use cvs prior to getting the six pack, expanded fighter squadrons and avengers. Waiting until '43 isn't such a bad idea due to the brutal effects of the coordination penalty. As said above lrcap doesn't work on cvtfs (I think it still works if you lrcap a sctf and have the cvtfs follow tho) and the b-17s wouldn't have a prayer of flying w/o a large number of escorts into the face of the KB ubercap.

BTW, the minimal results that sctfs obtain against lightly or non-defended ak/tk convoys was one of those things discussed somewhat heatedly when the game came out. I think the original gripe concerned the PoW/Repulse group getting in the middle of the Malaya invasion force convoys and accomplishing nada. It wasn't really resolved . . . more forgotten about than anything.

As far as I know USN cvs are allowed only 6 respawns . . . it's been so long since I looked at the manual (assuming it's correct), I could be wrong, however.

Continued good luck.

A couple of stragglers are attacked and destroyed but my CVs are careful to stay well away from enemy land-based air. My victory is sufficient. No need to ruin it by getting greedy... Japanese damage control sucks. The Zuiho which was, initially, only moderately damaged now has system damage in the 70s and flotation damage in the high 50s. It may actually sink at this rate.

I'm happy to let the Allies continue bombarding here. If I can keep them in the habit of doing this then when i attack they will defend at only half strength and Colombo should fall relatively easily.
