The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, a branch of the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, issued the warning after the quake hit about 190 kilometres south-west of the remote Pacific island of American Samoa. A tsunami watch was in effect for Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Nauru, the Marshall Islands, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Kosrae Island, Hawaii, Pohnpei in Micronesia, the Wake Islands, Pitcairn and the Midway Islands.
 
It was a 7.9 magnitude quake just off American Samoa. [X(]
