Orders: Intercept enemy fast transport convoys at Tori Shima

---

Hibiki’s bridge is small and crowded. This does not stop Captain Ishii from pacing back and forth, however. Every now and then he walks out onto the starboard observation platform and gazes towards Tanaka’s flagship, Hiei.

“What is going on?” he mutters to himself after one such look. “Why the hell are we still here?”

The night attack was a bust. No enemy ships showed up to be massacred, so the task force steamed back and forth lobbing shells at the island. The bombardment seems to have been effective, judging from the columns of thick smoke rising from the island into the morning sky.

The morning sky, of course, is the problem. It is now full daylight and the task force is still within sight of Tori Shima. Already enemy reconnaissance planes have been seen overhead.

---

Aboard Hiei Admiral Tanaka is also asking why the hell they are still there, and he is doing so with increasing urgency and frequency. He was preparing to withdraw his ships as planned when he received a radio transmission ordering him to maintain position. He does not know why. All he knows is that enemy aircraft are almost certainly on the way.

---

From the radar room Taiki informs the bridge that enemy planes are inbound from the south shortly before Tanaka orders the task force to disperse slightly to meet the coming attack. Captain Ishii issues the appropriate commands as combat stations are sounded. Anti-aircraft guns are manned and trained skyward. After that all there really is to do is wait.

And the wait is not a long one. The enemy pilots, puzzled but delighted to find a major Japanese surface force just waiting around to be attacked, come in fast and low. Cannon fire churns the sea to froth around their targets while aboard the Japanese ships flames leap upward and men scream in pain. The Japanese return fire is vigorous, if somewhat scattered, and here and there attacking planes shudder and begin to trail smoke.

Ahead of Hibiki destroyer Shimikaze almost vanishes amid the splashes from bombs and cannon shells. When the destroyer emerges she is trailing a light amount of smoke but does not seem heavily damaged. But those aboard Hibiki know that they are too far away to see where the decks and bulkheads of the other ship are smeared with blood.

Tone takes a bomb on the stern which starts a fire and Kirishima is struck by three bombs. And then the attack is over and the enemy planes are leaving, vanishing back southwards.

As Tanaka screams at Tokyo over the radio a second wave soon appears. This attack has fewer bombers but is heavily escorted. Fortunately the escorts remain high overhead. This attack concentrates on light cruiser Oyodo but the ship escapes without major damage. Again the enemy planes depart.

Finally, without comment or explanation, Tanaka receives orders to take his ships back to Osaka. They turn away from the island and are not pursued by further attacks.

“We got lucky,” Ishii tells his executive officer later, as sunset approaches. “We got damned lucky.”

“Yes sir,” says Lieutenant Miharu. He knows it is true. They enemy was probably a bit surprised to be presented with such an opportunity. Their attacks might have been much heavier.

Captain Ishii goes to his cabin to finally get some sleep. He still does not know why they were left in such a position for no reason. And he knows that he may never learn. As he lies down he tries to set the anger churning inside him aside long enough to let him get to sleep. Eventually he succeeds.

Ouch... could be FAR WORSE....

I assume the TF was accidentally set to 'patrol?'

Good lord, you've made me feel guilty for all those times I left "escorts bombard" on. [:o]

So, it turns out they had the right mission after all! [:D]
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

It's been a loooong while since I read any AARs on this forum, but for this AAR I have to ask, is Hibiki still in one piece? Has she been sunk yet? Judging from the first post on this page I take it Hibiki is still alive and kicking in 1945? [X(]

Yep. Given that this AAR could have ended in the first week at the hands of a Dutch submarine or Force Z (people have sent me screenshots showing exactly that happening to their own Hibikis) the fact that the destroyer has survived to this point of the war (February 1945) is actually kind of amazing.

Orders: Intercept enemy fast transport convoys at Tori Shima

---

Admiral Tanaka’s task force, battered but intact, returns to Osaka. His ships dock to refuel and to transfer the dead and wounded ashore. Crews undertake what minor repairs they can but none of his ships are detached: word comes down from above that they will be sent out again soon. No explanation or apology for the orders that put them in danger is forthcoming.

---

Captain Ishii comes back aboard from a brief meeting with Tanaka and the other captains and briefs his officers.

“Last night,” he tells them, “submarine I-185, which is on station off Tori Shima, reported hearing an underwater explosion. While nothing was found it seems very likely this was the result of an enemy ship hitting one of our submarine-laid mines there.”

“Our timing was one day off,” comments Lieutenant Kuwaki.

Captain Ishii nods. “That’s the opinion higher up,” he says. “They think they have figured out the enemy’s pattern," he says. “One day out, one day back, three days to rest and take on troops and supplies.”

“We’re going back out,” says Lieutenant Miharu.

“Yes,” says Ishii. He does not look very happy at the idea. “In three days. If the enemy is punctual this time we should catch them offshore as they try to unload.”

No one else looks very happy with these orders, not even Lieutenant Sugiyura, but there is no grumbling.

“We have three days to get ready,” says Ishii. “Let’s use that time well. Dismissed.”

Cool! Nice twist of fate. Just before the game ends, however, Hibiki should to go on a suicide mission with a battleship or something. End the AAR with a tragic twist. Just an idea to add some extra drama. [:D]

Imagine CF alluding to HQs screwing up an op!  Good thing that nothing like that ever happens in real life.

The IJN being given these type of missions show the desperation of the current situation Japan finds herself in.  Though we see the war from the viewpoint of the crew of the Hibiki CF paints an overall picture for us as to how things are going woven into the story.  Excellent work!
Todd

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

Allied broadcasts claim that all Japanese resistance on Chichi Jima has finally been eliminated. Japanese broadcasts sneeringly dismiss this as the propaganda of desperate men who know they have lost the battle. The Allies claim that there are still pockets of resistance on Iwo Jima but that they are shrinking. The Japanese claim that the defenders of Iwo Jima will never be overcome.

The leader of the Japanese forces on Chichi Jima, the odious General Tachibana, is unavailable for comment on the course of the battle. He lies in his bunker, dead by his own hand.

Excerpt from the personal diary of Petty Officer First Class Taiki Takahashi:

...and we depart tonight. Back to Tori Shima, rumor says. Fighting on our own doorstep, as it were. How did things get like this? Not so long ago we were lords of the Pacific. We went where we wished and attacked the enemy with impunity. Now we are about to venture out of Osaka and we do so at great peril.

I am not much given to flights of fancy but since my visit to Enoshima I find I get strangely notional at times. Right now the air feels heavy to me, even though the weather is chilly and breezy. It feels like it does before a thunderstorm somehow, when everything is too still and the air presses down on you.

I can’t shake the feeling that a storm is indeed coming our way. I wish this mission would be cancelled. I am not afraid to risk my life for my captain and for the Emperor but I somehow do not feel that we are about to attack the enemy. I think that perhaps they are about to attack us…
