castor troy: a look at the ground losses confirms another enemy carrier sunk this turn as these losses aren't all from Balikpapan's airfield...

I think those extra losses could have come from disbanding or withdrawing a unit or two - abandon the damaged planes to save the pilots.

Why? Just send all the pilots back to reserve.

Can you strip all the pilots from an existing unit? How, then, can you start rebuilding the unit?

You can send all pilots from the unit to RESERVE. As long as you have 1 plane moved out somewhere, you can rebuild the unit with planes and pilots from the reserve. Also, if you DISBAND damaged planes they do not show up in the loss report (though they are often lost from the game)

I would be 100% certain those losses represent another CV sinking

But those would show up as lost on the ground and not ops. This is the first campaign I've played where I see these high ops losses for carrer based ac for a repeated time now. No idea what Mundy is doing but it's not what I usually see.

In the case mentioned above I'm absolutely sure the ground losses were coming from a sunk carrier.

probably doing one or two attacks here in the future just to increase experience within my units but otherwhise we will let the enemy starve to death... the longer it takes, the longer we won't see those units being rebuilt...

I've got recon in the air in all directions and have no clue where the enemy frontline actually is... Java is stacked with troops, there must be over 150 different units on the island but everything else in reach of my heavy bombers seems to be empty... and when I say empty, I really mean empty (with the exception of Rabaul)...

SIGINT seems to confirm this as an enemy division is going to Manila, it should got to Mindanao, Borneo or Rabaul for example...

54th Division is loaded on AK Azumasan Maru moving to Manila.

It is possible to land troops at Samarinda and march them to Balikpapan - but surely by now he has realized the futility in bringing in any more troops or planes there.

No chance to do that without suffering horrendous losses IMO. And even then, those troops would sit at a base that is fully supressed by my big airfields of Manado and Kendari.
