There are only about 15 to 20 planes left but the runways are wrecked. My air units at Trimcomalee are coming along nicely. I have about 120 Zeroes available there, another 120+ Oscars and about 450 Sallys and Helens.
I am building Samir to a Level 4 airfiel, Bombay is almost Level 6 and Ahmadabad is at Level 4.... I will have 250 aviation support at each of these in 1 week
My current plan is to put all my fighters into Bombay to defend it against enemy airstrikes and spread my bombers between Bombay, Ahmadabad, Samir and Bombay +/- Delhi so that with strong fighter sweeps prior to my bomber attacks so I can have 400+ bomber sorties over Karachi on the day I stage these planes out of their forward airfields and, hopefully, maintain a good rate of sorties as the enemy bomber attacks to close my airbases are spread between 3 to 4 different airfields.
It seems workable to me but I have to assume that there are several hundred engineers at Karachi and I can't count on catching many four-engined bombers on the ground so my only real hope is to shoot them down in the air AND catch them on the ground and attrit them over several turns. So, does this sound doable according to the current plan? I can't really bombard the airbase prior to this because I am worried what multiple 500 lber strikes will do to my CAs and BBs... plus I'd love to whittle his fighters down so I could mount some Nell strikes on his BBs operating in the same hex as Karachi as anti-bombardment protection.

He's changed tactics on me again. He has port-attacked and since I had 4 Cls and 21 DDs there he had great success in so doing. Only Kuri is seriously damaged but I think it is time to pull back to Kendari again until such time as cannon-armed interceptors can be stationed to cover Koepang.
The ships were still in port because I was waiting for a non-clear day to sortie them. Unfortunately after several days of bad weather every day since they arrived has seen the sun split the sky and give everyone sunburn. Such is life.

Looks like my barely prepped assault force suffered badly in its attack BUT, crucially, did just enough. An enemy base force, an engineer unit and the 2nd USMC Raider Bn are destroyed in this action. At the end of the action the portions of the 35th Brigade which landed are disrupted 95% and fatigued in the 70s. I think it was a very close thing. This underlines the need for proper prep levels for future invasions. Fortunately I have several Brigades prepping for the Canton operation and they should be sufficiently prepped by the time the assault shipping is available.
I've read several AARs in which players place special emphasis on the USMC Raider Bns... Are they capable of paraborne assaults? Also, how long does it take an American combat unit whch is completely destroyed to respawn? I think I remember hearing it takes 550 days (the same as the CVs) but I amn't 100% sure.
Overall this operation was very succesful ( if only narrowly so) as it destroyed a dozen Catalinas ( one entire squadron), 67 F4F-4s and an SBD in one day, destroyed a raider Bn and took French Frigate Shoals all within 1 day. The material benefits are obvious but I think its greatest importance lies in the fact that it will act as a further slap in the face to the Allies. Not only did they lose two carriers BUT it must be obvious that I had already loaded the troops for this assault to be able to carry it through so quickly. That speaks of a great deal of aggressiveness and risk-taking and will, I think, tend to put the Allied player on the defensive mentally.
I will attempt to reinforce this mindset by further operations in the Aleutians and against Washington Island over the next fortnight. Once these are concluded and a strong Betty line is, once again, established ( including the re-garrisoning of Palmyra and Xmas Island.... the 46 men left behind at Palmyra will be ecstatic to hear that they are no longer being left to die but will, instead, see their parent units return and form a permanent garrison.
Its a pity that Trey won't launch an invasion of Johnston. I had 970 AV there behind Level 5 forts and 18,500 mines. In addition I had an absolutely insane number of CD guns, AAA and artillery. I was quite looking forward to being assaulted by 4 or 5 divisions of americans and attriting them into nothingness while my Tinas flew in Naval Guard units from Midway. Ah well, my time for interesting defensive battles will come soon enough.

WOW
I go away for 5 days and had to spend hours catching up on this, amazing read there Nemo ! well done ..
THE CD fortress at colombo has fixed 9inch guns iirc and these will slant combat power quite a bit so it 'may' well not be the most powerful ground formation.
2 CV's too .. nice ..

RE: Workers of Empire Rejoice... and increase HI production...
1st May 1942: Logistics Status Report.
Heavy Industry: Up from 14,429 to 14,653. Reserves are up a little also but since my armament production continues at maximal speed and uses some 4,200 HI per turn it isn't rising very quickly. During May I'm going to halve my daily armament production and build up a bit of a HI reserve for use in further expanding my industries.
Resources: Up from 21,975 to 22,553. Some of this increase is accounted for by captured cities in China and India but a good deal is also coming from further repairs at Soerabaja in the DEI.
Oil: Up from 2593 to 2639. Another 100 oil points are available for repair and another 100 oil points in the DEI near Singapore have not, yet, been captured. I expect my oil production to top out at 2,800 ( sufficient to support a HI of 16,800) prior to the capture of the Soviet Union. Okha will add another 400 oil and allow me to expand my HI to my target of 19,000 HI.
Naval Shipyard. Up from 1706 to 1748 and with up to another 500 shipyard points left to repair. Production is moving along nicely with the next CV and BB Yamato due this month. Once they are produced a total of 335 naval shipyard points will be freed up every day. This will allow me to accelerate Shinano and have all of my CVLs and CVs being accelerated at the same time. Things will look much better than normal in mid-43.
Merchant Shipyard. 1000 points seems a little low as I'm accelerating a lot of ARs and a few TKs but I have a lot of merchant shipping sitting around unused so I can work within this limit for now.
Shipyard Repair: My shipyard repair is definitely sufficient to my needs. I'm expanding a few of my smaller bases to act as specialised DD repair yards while three of my larger bases are now well capable of handling Yamato and Shinano class ships.
Armament: 692 and more than sufficient for my present needs. I am stopping 325 points of armament production which will save some 1950 HI per day, important for the continued expansion of my other areas of production. My plan is to secure significant over-capacity in my crucial areas for the time in 1943 when naval production requirements will decrease significantly.
Vehicle Production: Steady at 160. Reserves are at a bit of a low of 90 vehicle points but this is only temporary. My tank regiments are all almost at full strength.
Aircraft Engines: I have the capacity to produce 1569 engines per month and respectable pools. My need for Nakajima engines has fallen significantly this month as I have switched production from Helen twin-engined bombers to Sally twin-engined bombers. My next undertaking will be to expand Mitsubishi production to, roughly, 1200 engines per turn. As the time for Tony production nears I'll slowly triple Kawasaki production also.
Supply: Up to 2,050,036 from 1,993,133 last month. It isn't going up by all that much BUT this is during the period of time in which I am expanding tens of thousands of tons of supply every day on industrial repair and expansion. This month alone I appear to have spent a bit over 240,000 tons of supply on repair and expansion of my industrial base. I think this is a good sign for the future.
Fuel: Fuel levels remain good.
In-game statistics, including score etc.
Well, essentially the air campaign has gotten a lot closer due to the mishandled probe at Karachi. Allied forces have lost a total of 3576 planes, the Japanese 2933.
In better news army losses are continuing to increase in a manner definitely in my favour. The Allied forces have lost 10,604 army points while the Japanese have lost only 641.
My anti-shipping offensive went relatively well. 54 enemy ships, including 2 CVs were sunk in return for 3 of my own ships.
The overall score continues to be in me favour with the Allies having 5,914 points to the Japanese total of 27,869. Overall we're hitting a 5.5 to 1 ratio which should move even more in my favour when Karachi and Chungking fall. Obviously, as previously stated, we're not playing for auto-victory but a very favourable points ratio is likely to be indicative of a good strategic position.

Allied LCUs don't respawn? So if I destroy them in their entirety that's it? Hmm, makes intentional withdrawals and counter-landings eminently more valuable if that's so. It seems like a strange design decision though. Do Japanese LCUs respawn?
Rob,
Good to see you back! Ok, thanks for that. Since my BBs have little to do at Karachi I'm going to commit them to Colombo and help soften that up.
And onto the next day's results...

My naval reconnaissance had begun identifying 1 to 2 BB at Dutch Harbour over the last few days. I took the precaution of ordering my resupply convoy ( carrying 14,000 tons of supply) and my troop transport convoy ( loading an infantry Brigade at Amchitka) to vacate the port two days ago as I was expecting a bombardment run. I also created 3 barges and sent 7 barges to Kiska so that I can unload supplies at a rear area base and then transport them forward by barge so as not to have to expose further APs/AKs to the sporadic bombardment runs I may see in the future.
Trey committed to a bombardment run which seems to have cost him dearly:
1. I have gained significant intelligence as to the location of some American heavy units.
2. One American destroyer was sunk outright and another two were significantly damaged. I only had nine and a half thousand mines in place by the time of the bombardment run as Kiska only became a Size 3 port recently and this delayed any intensive mining efforts. This is a pity since if I had managed to have the 15,000 to 20,000 mines my developing SOP calls for for bastions I think I could have done significantly better and mauled one or two of the medium units also. Ah well, such is life.

Allied port attacks continue be pressed home over Koepang and the Claudes and Nates simply do not have the firepower to stop significant numbers of bombers... I wonder if Trey realises that the presence of Nates and Claudes on the front line is not a sign that I'm training expendable forces cheaply but a sign that I've, essentially, run out of Zeroes ( I've responded by ordering the doubling of A6M3 production and a 50% increase in A6M2 production). The rebuilding of my Zero Daitai at Colombo continues and in an another fortnight there should be sufficient to take the offensive again.

My initial test attack against Chungking. 8 Engineer regiments were ordered to deliberate attack while all other units in the hex were ordered to provide cover via a bombardment attack. I dropped the fortification levels by 1. This is encouraging as the reduction of fortification levels to 0 should see the adjusted defence of the Allied forces drop to roughly 9,000. That's the sort of force level I could take on in a direct assault. Next I will try assaulting with an infantry division and the engineer regiments. My hope is that the infantry division will act as a covering force and absord the brunt of any Chinese reaction. Tough on the infantry division's soldiers but they are more expendable than the engineers.

In other news the CVL Zuiho is now just 60 miles from Midway. Midway is now a Level 4 port with 4 x ARs in port and a Fleet HQ. I've done everything I could to prepare Midway to receive cripples after a carrier battle so I'm pretty confident that once Zuiho docks it should be fine. Since it only has 60 miles to travel I'm hopeful it will survive. The manner in which flooding increased massively turn after turn was eye-opening. I know this is a CVL and therefore has less durability etc but to almost lose it to just 2 x 500lb bombs says some very bad things about Japanese damage control.

It seems that Trey's maximal "punch" from Karachi comprises 250 four and twin-engined bombers. I can put at least that many fighters into the air over one of my bases in India so I have a chance to try to stop one of these attacks cold. If I can do that then I can safely stage my bombers in and close Karachi. It'll only need to be closed for a couple of days for my Bettys to destroy the British shipping guarding against bombardment and then with the addition of repeated bombardment attacks Karachi will soon become intensely vulnerable. It all depends on being able to withstand the initial American bomber attacks.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/05/42
I think we're about 5 or 6 days away from re-initiating combat around Karachi. In the meantime my carriers are making for Japan for some rest and refit. Many of the BBs and CAs which were damaged during the DEI and Indian battles are coming along nicely in Japanese ports and I estimate that with 1 month in port most of my carriers and battleships can have their damage reduced to 5 or 6 sys.
With any luck this will allow them to properly cover the invasions of Australia and New Zealand before undergoing another period of rest and refit prior to the possible invasion of the Hawaiian Islands.

This may be a problem, as I don't think you can stop the factories auto-upgrading to helens again.
I could be wrong, but that is what I remember happens.

RE: Workers of Empire Rejoice... and increase HI production...
I doth think they do ?? do they ?? arent the sally and helen 'side by side ' production assets?. iirc both upgrade to a late war bomber of which the name completely eludes me. but i have used both factories at the same time vs the AI. and does make sense when engines are running low.

You may be right. The end upgrade is the Peggy. But your early Sally factory does autoconvert in Jan? 42.

never noticed it happening in any of my games vs the AI. If tre its a shame engine plants dont auto upgrade to meet the new a/c's requirement too.

The Lepperchaun
One day the hero of ancient days the generous Finn McCool was wondering
how life on earth was now that it was under the general direction and total
management by the Christian church-so he took it upon himself to investigate
and on the third day after thinking it over thumb firmly on wisdom tooth and
after a large salmon of knowledge dinner he descended from tir-na-nog (the land
without egg nog aka land of youth) to the dusty pathways of Earth.
Upon arrival he met up with his Christian Counter part St.Patrick who was as
usual on the road from big house to big house in search of a pint and food and
of course selling raffle tickets for that new church.
What brings ye here said saint patrick to finn? Well says Finn I came to see
how things were under your guidance and to walk with you and find out. Well
St. Patrick says you will enjoy do doubt a wonderful pint of stout at the next
big house as they say there is none in heaven. No said Finn-he had taken the
precatuion of drinking several vats before descending-both because he feared
that the christians would have banned it by then and also to provide gasseous
fuel for his assent. And said Finn that bit about no beer in heaven is only for
the Catholics-for over charging at their festivals.
So on the road the two went talking about old times and the deeds of the Fianna.
As they got to one particularlly dry and dusty plain they met an old lepper
crawling along on the stumps of what once were his legs. The leppar recognized
St. Patrick with his traditional green vestments croizer, miter and large roll of
chances for the next drawing. The lepper said to Patrick -it is said that you
have the power to cure and that many have been helped by your power. Tis true
said St.Patrick I have done many wonderful things and many a good ticket number
I have sold. Finn said now here is a test Patrick in the old days we would have
been generous and we would have helped the poor what do you have for this poor
man?
It is not a hard thing to tell Finn O generous, thoughtful Finn. And he motioned
the lepper to come nearer.
Lepper Said St. Patrick-Shall I cure you? (Finn was astonished-how could patrick
have such powers-impossible-maybe christianity has greater powers after all....)
The lepper said that indeed a cure would be a great blessing for his poor life.
Patrick looked down at the lepper then up at the still amazed Finn- Lepper as
you know I am building churches throughout Ireland. Yes said the lepper the
bingos and dances and dinners are without number throughout this land of ours.
Indeed said Patrick-Cringe did Finn- Lepper if you will give me a coin I shall
cure you-do you have a coin?
The lepper thought and looked up at patrick through the rays of a hot sun-yes
patrick I have the two gold coins which I have saved for burial-but if you can
cure me they will be yours and he unwrapped them from the cloth and handed them
to the Saint.Finn at this point could bear no more -he took Patrick asside and
said:"Patrick how can you deceive a poor man like this -this had better be
good...'Patrick said to Finn watch and you shall see.
Patrick reached into his green satchel and pulled out two large pint bottles of
Stout and uncapped them. lepper If you wish to be saved kneel down -no hard task
said the lepper-Now I kneel always -so he moved into the sun beside the saint
and bowed his head in prayer and hope. Patrick with all due ceremony raised with
two hands the two stout bottles and poured the sweet thick stout all over the
lepper -and he said unto him-lepper with the goodness of stout go forward into
life and find your cure.
As the lepper struggled along the road becomming stickier in the hot sun and
atracting a host of flys as company Fair finn was turning a bright red Patrick
he said-what is the meaning of this terrible wrong-that man is not cured and
will not be and you have taken his money-how the world is cursed by the
christians.
Finn said Patrick settle down have you forgotten all the old tales-of the Tuatha
de,and the Fomor, of the little people-or of the Gentry and the banshee? Is it
that long that you have been away your memory gone?
Have you indeed forgotten dear Finn of that centerpiece of Irish Culture-
THE L E P P E R C O N ! ! ! !

RE: Workers of Empire Rejoice... and increase HI production...
Wow, you get all caught up with work for a few days and next thing you know there's Irish mythology on the forum... In order to save others from such horror I guess I have no choice but to update a bit more... The updates can be pretty much summarised with. Navy, stable. Army, aww crap. Air Force, wow, we'll need lots of coffins and lots of commendations.

By month's end it will have a minimum of 15,000 mines, a large number of CD guns and approximately 1,000 AV behind what should be Level 5 or 6 forts. As suc it conforms closely to what I envision my standard atoll/island defensive position comprising in 1943. Nothing short of a multi-Corps landing is going to shift that as far as I can see. I may be proven wrong but, either way, it will prove a very useful learning opportunity.

What should have been 700+ armoured level bombers has been reduced to barely 400 even including replacements over the past few days. I'm pulling out all the stops to ramp up my Sally production subsequent to the changeover from Helen production. By the end of the month about 120 Sallys should be rolling off the production line every month. Hmm, Trey looks like he wants Koepang... I'd like some advice on this...
Assumptions:
Australian invasion force comprising a bit over 300 level bombers, heavy cruiser-based bombardment force ( no BBs, no CVs), 3 Australian divisions and the usual support units. Approximately 300 fighters would be available to provide fighter cover for Koepang once it falls.
I am placing several AAA regiments and a small Base Force at Koepang. I want to appear to have some strength and some desire to keep Koepang. This will help entice Trey to commit large forces. The more he commits to Koepang the less he'll have available to defend Northern Australia and New Zealand and that suits me just fine.
I'm thinking of trying to build up Dili and Lautem ( concentrating on Lautem) with a view to allowing the Allies to land at Koepang and then preventing the evacuation of more than cadres from the invading force. I feel that a combination of army level-bombers ( approximately 200 to 300) operating from Dili and Lautem with Bettys and Nells ( about 150) operating from Kendari should prove more than sufficient to close the airfield and prevent significant evacuation by sea.
However, as with all plans there is risk... There is always a possibility that if he takes Koepang he can build it up to be a thorn in the side of my resource centres in the DEI. So, worth the risk or not? I have the possibility of building Koepang up to about 500 to 600 AV in a very short time indeed in order to thwart such an invasion and it may be more sensible to do this and forego the more nuanced and pleasing but also more risky option.

I don't know how but it seems that Trey has supplies to burn in Colombo.
Overall my plan is to rebuild my shattered bomber formations as much as possible, build an impenetrable fighter shield over Ahmadab and then use that as a base from which to strike at Karachi. Later, once enemy forces have been beaten into nothingness I intend to base my Bettys and Nells at Bombay, use them to destroy the enemy fleet protecting Karachi against my battleline and then send my battleline into Karachi to remove the support troops. With these troops removed the enemy's effective AV will be quartered.
An effective AV of 5,000 is something my ground troops can handle in conjunction with my army level bombers. Well, that's the plan. It'll cost me at least 600 planes ( possibly 1,000) over the next 3 weeks but it must be done.

RE: Workers of Empire Rejoice... and increase HI production...
The battleline is indeed the key to the battle of Karachi, if you manage to close the AF, the battline will do most of the work for you... Actually, even if you can't close the AF, the Battleline might be the key to closing it, you'd have to LRCAP like hell, but a good nuke bombardment makes all the difference...

These attacks are, in my opinion, a major error on Trey's part. They prevent his bombers rebuilding their morale and recovering fatigue and this will give me an edge I intend to exploit when I commit my fighter forces. His first strike will get through for sure. I should destroy a large number of its bombers but it WILL get through. The higher the morale and lower the fatigue of the bombers the more effective this first strike will be. If he can close my base then I will completely lose the air war in India as I simply do not have the fighters to mount a third full-scale attack within the next month.
What he is doing is weakening this first strike and make it likely that it will not close Ahmadabad. If the first strike fails to close Ahmadabad then I think I should be able to repulse further strikes entirely ( due to the effect of losses on bomber morale).
