Germany's unforgivable crime before the Second World War was her attempt to extricate her economy from the world's trading system and to create her own exchange mechanism which would deny world finance its opportunity to profit.

My brother claims to have read LOTR 40+ times.

Me? I fell asleep at p. 40 of The Hobbit. [>:]

I stayed awake through the movies, however. [:)]

Sandy Koufax, a boyhood idol. As a left-handed pitcher, I patterned my right-leg-raised-high delivery after Koufax's. Until one day, in game, I raised my right leg so high, I split my jeans at the butt seam, then threw the ball over the backstop in my embarrassment. [X(]

There were woods behind the backstop. I don't think they ever did find that lost ball.

I am halfway through Soldaten: On Fighting, Killing, and Dying, by Harald Welzer and Jefferson Chase.

This book is an interesting sociological and psychological analysis of secretly recorded conversations between POW's held in both the USA and Great Britain during World War 2. The authors reconstruct what they call the prisoner's "frame of reference". This is not a historical look at the historical facts but the perception of the facts by the German military. The prisoner's for the most part do not refer to "people" and "killed", instead they refer to "targets" and "results". But some do speak more bluntly:

"Bruns: When I arrived those pits were so full that the living had to lie down on top of the dead; then they were shot and, in order to save room, they had to lie down neatly in layers. Before this, however, they were stripped of everything at one of the stations—here at the edge of the wood were the three pits they used that Sunday and here they stood in a queue 1½ km long which approached step by step—a queuing up for death. As they drew nearer they saw what was going on. About here they had to hand over their jewelry and suitcases. All good stuff was put into the suitcases and the remainder thrown on a heap. This was to serve as clothing for our suffering population—and then, a little further on they had to undress and, 500 m in front of the wood, strip completely; they were only permitted to keep on a chemise or knickers. They were all women and small two-year-old children. Then all those cynical remarks! If only I had seen those tommy-gunners, who were relieved every hour because of over-exertion, carry out their task with distaste, but no, nasty remarks like: “Here comes a Jewish beauty!” I can still see it all in my memory: A pretty woman in a flame-colored chemise. Talk about keeping the race pure: at Riga they first slept with them and then shot them to prevent them from talking."

There is not as many exerpts from the 100,000 pages of transcripts, but that is okay with me. I have never read anything that delves so deeply into the thoughts of the German military man.

I read that book years ago. I had forgotten about it.

Hey wodin, I was about 11 when I "borrowed" Lord Foul's Bane: The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever from a book store. It was the first serious book I read.
