Let's have some closeups so we can see what is going on. This is from the beginning of turn 95, so we can see how Elmer ended up at the end of turn 94. The 1st PzA continues to hammer away and maybe/hopefully Elmer is wearing thin. Even though the highlighted German recon unit got messed up by Elmers' counterattacks, when the turn ended about ten Soviet divisions were left cut off in the Podolsk area. I'll be sure to pound them this turn.

2nd PzA continues to push the Soviets back toward Moscow while trying to cut any of them off. You can see there are a lot of good German infantry around Mozhaysk that could be attacking, but I'd rather wait to see if 2nd PzA can get round behind them. Don't take casualties unless you have to.

3rd and 4th PzA area. It looks like I'll be able to get thru the area northeast of Rzhev, but I'm sure Elmer has some unseen units there. That Soviet concentration north of Olenino is sure a thorn.

I don't know who's got what, but I want to fix a unit colour issue that Silvanski discovered, along with some updates to that background.doc. I'll do that today/tonight and resend it to you Mr. Fulkerson. Then you can repost it, thank you both so much!

Breakthrough!!

This is a shot from the end of my turn 95 (the previous shot was of turn 95 but before my moves). I finally cracked thru in the north and the south, now there is the huge task of trying to close this pocket, and then of holding it and eliminating it. This is one of the biggest encirclements I've ever attempted in this scenario, and because it's the most important area on the map, I don't expect it to be easy. A lot of my mobile formations are still engaged behind the breakthrough points, and that's a big issue. I need to get them out of there and send them to help with the encirclement.

Any chance of straightening your front line south & southwest of Moscow?

How's Elmer gonna handle this?

Well, when I originally designed this, I had in mind that Moscow should be protected from all directions. But there is only so much that can be done without compromising the entire front. I wonder what a human Soviet player would do.

I'd love to, but it's another one of the many decisions I've had to make over the past 5 or 6 turns. Leaving 2nd PzA in the area south of Moscow (in order to ultimately shorten the overall line), or moving them in behind 1st PzA to help with the encirclement (because without the encirclement, all of this is for nothing). I think that completing the encirclement and holding it against counterattacks from the north and west will get the priority.

Turn 96 was spent mostly widening and securing the breakthrough points, with some recon to the north and east. This is the end of turn 97, and the area is so big it had to be split into two screen shots. The Soviet 1st Shock Army has arrived north of Kalinin and along with 9th Tank Corps is making some counterattacks. North of Rzhev/Olenino Elmer continues to exert pressure, but he has moved some units from the defensive line to the west/south of Moscow, so the counterattacks in that area have stopped. Several uncommited Panzer Divisions have arrived at Kalinin, and next turn they will take the Klimry and Dubna roads to the east in order to solidify the encirclement.

The east side of the encirclement area looks much more serious for Elmer. He certainly won't be able to break through this area. I've moved east towards the Oka River. This was something I didn't do in my last game as I thought it would be stretching too far, but now I think it may afford some level of flank protection as it is a major river. Inside the blue circle are several Panzer Divisions poised to strike thru Vladimir and then west to link up with 4th PzA coming from Kalinin. I know Elmer has been moving units from the Moscow area toward the rear, so I have to make sure I cut all his supply lines so that any of his attacks from the inside will be minimalized. You can also see that there are no rail lines that can help with my supply situation until Moscow is taken.

I've just gotten word that Das Reich has been ordered to France for refitting. That's the unit that is farthest to the northeast (and just south of Korov). It was heading to block any Soviet move from the Gorky area (off shot to the northeast).

Moscow, and any other location connected to an active rail line, can provide supply. Once surrounded, no location can provide supply. With two slight exceptions, the Life Road across Lake Ladoga at Leningrad. The second is the Kerch Straits, where we had to add supply points in order to provide some supply to units that had crossed the straits but hadn't linked to normal land supply on their side of the straits.

Great graphics Steve, keep 'em coming. Quick question: I've destroyed, oh I donno, maybe a hundred Soviet aircraft by bombarding them with arty and I'm wondering if that number is added to those destroyed in the air when you look at the air briefing.

I don't know for sure, maybe someone would have to run a test in order to find out.

soviet spawning behind my lines

Post by larryfulkerson »

Hey Steve & Rick:

I found a situation where some Soviet units spawned in a hex I owned. What gives? Are these supposed to be partisans? Remnants of divisions I destroyed previously and bypassed?
