What now to make of the demise of the Yura/Yubari TF. I’d sent them haring off to Diego Garcia at full speed looking to make an intercept based on a sighting report to the west of the island. A small group of 4 ships with a CL listed. Not much to go on but I decided it was worth sending this small TF out to see what was up. I sent the turn off knowing that there were chances of all kinds of results ranging from fabulous victory to outright disaster. My heart was leaning towards the disastrous result. It was a decision made that on balance caused me to be far more pensive than optimistic regarding the outcome.
So 4 warships lost and a bitter pill to forewarn of many more to come. In retrospect, however, there was much to be learnt from this defeat. Bomber squadrons present were identified as VB2, VS3 and VT2. Todd is not the kind of player to move squadrons around on his carriers. We can all do it but I don’t see Todd as being one. Therefore, I think it fair to say that CVs Lexington and Saratoga, at least, are wandering around the far south west corner of the board. 74 Wildcat on escort is an awful lot… does this mean that there is at least 1 other CV in this force? I know the US carriers can pack a lot on board but this number from 2 carriers would surely mean that every single fighter was sent aloft with little left on CAP. Putting aside the Brit carriers I’ve accounted for 2 of the 6 Allied carriers. I know Todd has the multifaceted Operation SNAFU building up and the thing I need to do now is work out how to use this information. Todd has mentioned being fretful of not knowing the position of KB. I’ve felt the same about his carriers and now at least know the general location of 2. Question is how best to position KB and the fleet which at present has the bulk located at Truk…. Not to mention continuing operations.
I have land units in various stages of prep for Suva and Adak. I’m inclined now to push ahead with an invasion of Suva.
In the mean time I fully expect to see an invasion of Diego next turn.

Many thanks too for reading this AAR. I almost lost the plot on this a few months ago and was at least 6 weeks behind the action. Today I have finally caught up after much banging away at the keyboard. I hope you have enjoyed the read so far. There is action aplenty coming up as Todd has been promising me Operation SNAFU for months now. He has hinted that it is in full operation so I expect many things to be thrown at me soon. Todd has said it is a make or break operation so we shall see which of us breaks first.
As for that carrier TF… mysteriously vanished. Todd referred to it as a convoy… if so a convoy with big time escort and more importantly heading to where? Picking off that AO was a nice kick back though. And no invasion of Diego Garcia… I expect Todd had a decent snoop and saw that I currently have nothing there.. yet at least. I’m not sure about the value of fighting over this chain of islands.
Good news in China with the fall of Neikiang. Steady as she goes as supply really is becoming an issue. That attack was expensive and left a grand total of 1 supply point at Neikiang upon capture.

Central China is now becoming a much clearer picture for me. There is of course a mass of units holed up in Chungking but my first priority is to capture Chengtu. Apart from the units already here there is 5 beat up units on the way from Neikiang. Once my Neikiang victors have had a short rest they will move on out to Chengtu. An armoured unit has already been ordered to move out and cut off a likely retreat direction.
The bombardment of Chungking has commenced with good results straight up.
Kienko has 4 units with another 4 sitting just outside the town. Japanese units are already in place to cut off retreat options.
Supply will remain the issue here but with Neikiang captured I now have a readily available base for beat up units to rest and recover.

Decision time now that the Allies appear to have committed themselves to Diego Garcia and whatever else they might wish to push on towards after that. I’ve decided that Ceylon has now moved on up the list in priority. Mangalore needs to be dealt with and with the fall of that town 26th Indian Division will be eliminated. The forces operating around Rawalpindi also need to capture that town and eliminate the Allied forces posted here. Multan and Jodphur will need defensive attention but for the time being I feel that Todd may not feel confident about launching an assault here into the teeth of LBA which he cannot yet counter. I have enough combat strength available to land on and assault Ceylon. It appears that everything here is holed up in Colombo so I should be able to achieve a foothold and work my way from there.
Calcutta is going to have to wait… and continue to be a troublesome worry at the back door.
KB is still at Truk and is awaiting the arrival of Shokaku in a couple of days. Akagi is the only CV still to have her refit so I’m happy with that picture. Mini KB is also at Truk and for the time being will stay here as I feel that Todd will soon be striking from the east with the other 4 American CVs. The assault on Suva will commence soon and have a look at what recon reveals about the hordes massing at Pearl. Oodles of shipping which can have but only 1 purpose. Todd stills worries about the location of KB and I intend to maintain that concern for as long as I can do so.

Kido Butai, although powerful, was a raiding force, and this is exactly how the Japanese understood its usage. 'Shattered Sword'

Allied deliberate attack at Chungking. Somewhat perplexed with what happened here. AV for the Allies seems about right but only 8355 troops and 269 guns in the attack – certainly isn’t the Allied troop numbers here. Must have been only 1 or 2 units attacking – has to have been a slip up by Todd…surely. Do like my adjusted defence but that is going to swing right around the other way when I eventually give the order to attack.

Pilot Matsuyama N. is reported as to have escaped capture.
Some wishful thinking going on with CV Lexington turning up on the sunk ships list and reported as such on tracker. No planes turning up as lost on field so I would think it prudent to consider her still afloat and working her way back to a yard somewhere. Todd was none too pleased about the torpedo hit and stated that he couldn’t afford to lose a carrier.
Diego must see Allied troops landing next turn especially now that it has seen recon and Todd will know the place is empty.
