RE: Ship Losses
Well, I got three witp001.pws files which cover days 1, 2 and 3 of the Battle of Tarakan, with day 2 being the Big One, but I dunno where to serve it.
Geocities, I've given up trying to find out what is an acceptable filename to it. I can email them to someone else if they can serve them, maybe?

Imperial Guard destroyed
Well, lets get back into the swing of it.
14th May, 1943
BURMA/INDIA
The British attack has steamed through Burma, destroying many Japanese units as it goes. One Indian division leapt forward to Rangoon and the Japanese Imperial Guard was cut off at Pagan by the bulk of the British forces and today, was finally destroyed along with all its support units.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Pagan
Allied Shock attack
Attacking force 124540 troops, 968 guns, 1459 vehicles
Defending force 3248 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles
Allied assault odds: 2270 to 1
Japanese ground losses:
13079 casualties reported
Guns lost 75
Things arent all rosy though, I sent the 25th Indian Division to Rangoon to perform the aforementioned cutting off and they in turn got pinned down by his reserves, which were much bigger than I an anticipated. They managed to hold on a few days but with odds like they are facing surrender seems likely.
I sent a fast transport unit from Akyab to evacuate cadres but I managed to cock it up on the first day due to the awful UI this game has. [:(]. Having finally remembered the 'pick up' option they are going back, but I dunno if they will be in time.
Almost irrelevant anyway due to the slow refresh rate of Indian squads.
Japanese army loss points have crept up to 4300 after the Burmese attack.
...and Winston wants a BB. Last month he wanted a CV leaving me on ~0 PPs. I need those PPs unfortunately to free up more Australian units to maintain pressure on the DEI. Which means...
I might have to send back Warspite! GAH

Ground combat at Balikpapan
Allied Shock attack
Attacking force 38278 troops, 282 guns, 103 vehicles
Defending force 18857 troops, 149 guns, 0 vehicles
Allied assault odds: 3 to 1 (fort level 5)
Allied Assault reduces fortifications to 2
Japanese ground losses:

Allied ground losses:
244 casualties reported

Three divisions at Balikpapan with plenty of support - including aviation support included in the first wave so I can station Corsairs there asap and protect further convoys - are having their way with him in southern Borneo. They have been badly damaged but not quite as badly as the disastrous PM landing. I think, with perhaps another division, southern Borneo is safely mine. Its all in bomber range from Macassar and he can't resupply it so its surely a matter of time before the Tarakan - Banjarmasin line is in Allied hands.
I have seven CVs at Koepang. I'm tempted to raid Singapore or Palembang. Allied submarines spotted Vals around the north of the PI so I think he's relocating what CVs he has left away from the Allied death star to the Pacific.
...where CVL Cowpens, CVL Belleau Wood, CV Formidable and CV Indomitable await!
SOPAC
I plaster him regularly with bombers out of Vella Lavella and Port Moresby. There is no Jap airforce here anymore. But a lack of LCUs mean even if I wanted to I can't attack anywhere further here. I don't care. SOPAC is neutralised, the main weight of the Allies bypasses it, and heads for Borneo.
CENTPAC
Majuro is being built up. British CVs at San Diego are almost patched, and we even got some battleships as Idaho and Ramilles are fixed. Might possibly be some more adventurism in the Marshalls in a couple of months, probably of the easy variety, such as moving SeaBees to Bikini Atoll to make sure his units are well and truly cut off.
I lack transport for an invasion, all my units are busy in the DEI. Also I got a lot of units building up uselessly on the West Coast which need transport to Australia and thence, to Borneo.

BURMA/INDIA
The British offensive into Burma has been stopped, at least temporarily, by Japanese forces one hex NE of Rangoon.
He has approximate 75,000 troops, the British have 120,000. I'm sending another Indian division to assist but it'll be a couple of weeks probably before they get there.
Simon isnt dumb, he waited for me on the far side of the river. The Indian and British units survived the shock attacking well enough but the Chinese divisions were badly mauled, their assault values are down to the 30s. I should be happy I suppose, as there are plenty of Chinese in the pool to recover these units with. Also the three Chindit brigades suffered quite badly.
So now we're working on a war of attrition, but I do hold the upper hand. The air assault he is suffering is horrendous, literally several hundred bombers of all descriptions, 100+ Beauforts, 100+ heavies, 100+ Mitchells... he's losing 200-500 a day from aerial assault alone. Every so often the heavies plaster Rangoon just to keep his supply manageable.
My forces are supplied from Akyab, SEAC HQ can apparently draw supply to the Burmese rail network over the trail.
And... HMS Ramilles is being sent to the UK. It was in Koepang but is three days out from Bombay at the moment, having burned rubber full speed all the way. The US/ANZAC assault on Borneo has the Pearl veteran BBs there, a good five of them, so Ramilles is really superfluous. And Warspite, currently at Colombo, is the better ship. ...and I wanna free up another ANZAC division to keep the pressure on Borneo, so... bye bye, Ramilles.
Dakota reinforcements now mean I have almost 400 transport aircraft based at Ledo flying supplies to China, and shuttling damaged troops out of China to R&R in Calcutta.
CHINA
Sian is surrounded and screwed, and along with it a third of the Chinese army. Nothing I can do because none of my LCUs will actually move. ...its nothing to do with enemy control of hexes either, because I can't move units even in bases where the Japs are nowhere near.
Almost all my units in China are stuck and refuse to move. I'm a mite pi$$ed off. What units I have are being sent down the road to Sian to try and help out, about 1200 assault points worth.
Whether they obey orders or not who knows, they have moved miles within the hex so perhaps they will.
DEI
Balikpapan is now fully up and running and making its presence felt. 1 USMC and 2 RNZAF Corsair squadrons are based there and repeatedly chopping up Zeroes as they fly escort for Mitchells and Dauntlesses to strike ground forces all along the Borneo south coast. The Dauntlesses are the old Hornet/Wasp airgroups. [:D]. For some reason Simon had a TK in Tarakan, sucking out the last dregs of oil perhaps? Well, it got bombed. Quite badly. [:D].

Tarakan itself is a moderate sized airbase, with carrier Kates and Zeroes, but its been mauled by my Mitchells and Beaufighters. Jap aircraft there managed to torpedo a couple of AKs but the cost in Japanese aircraft was, I would estimate, at least 50+ destroyed for almost no Allied loss.
Macassar is now level 5 airfield. Given the F-Bs and Mitchells got moved to Balikpapan, space was free to move my heavy bombers up from Koepang. Singkawang, his main (only?) airbase in Java/Borneo at the moment, has been heavily bombed by my heavies. In the last four days I flew two raids, and destroyed 150 aircraft on the ground, mostly Zeroes and Betties.
Operation Sweep 'n Clear has begun. the Allied CV death star, now fairly confident, is going to circle around Borneo and sweep any convoys he has around there. My submarines have found the waters north of Borneo to be good hunting grounds, he has 3 convoys there at the moment that I can see, so I thought it was time for a raid in force.
While on the way up I bombed the hell out of the 50 odd damaged hulks in Soerabaja harbour, sinking two DDs and 4 APs and smacking the rest around quite badly. He won't be moving those easily. Today I moved further up and bombed Sinkawang with Dauntlesses, thinking it'd be easy prey given the two heavy bomber raids I ran on the place earlier. No, its still operational, just about. I lost 30 aircraft, mostly Dauntlesses, and he lost about 35, mostly Betties on the ground. He only has a half dozen Zeroes there but they really ripped up my divebombers. They must be the few ace pilots who have survived the rather unfortunate Jap campaign.

The ground campaign on Borneo hasnt gone so well. I tried to move my troops NE from Balikpapan. It looked like they were moving - and an Aussie tank battalion did move. But my infantry refused to follow! They got to 60 hexes and then just... stopped moving. On its own, the tank battalion got r@ped and had to pull back. [:(]. I've given them orders, again, to move NE, but as they stopped completely it'll be another few days before they actually cover the sixty miles.
This, like China, pisses me off. His disrupted and fatigued troops have had a whole two weeks to dig in and recover, just from the games dire LCU movement system.
...on the other hand I'm not that pissed off, mainly cuz I got two divisions well ensconced in Borneo with a third coming from Australia fairly soon. I think this outnumbers him approximately 2.5 to one, and I have total air superiority. So its just a matter of time, and May 1943, we're ahead of schedule.
SOPAC
The campaign here is mainly defensive in nature now. Port Moresby's 100 heavies have annihilated utterly Lae and Gili Gili. My convoys head from Brisbane to Darwin without being molested - not even search aircraft anymore. Rabaul meanwhile is getting the hammer from RNZAF Liberators and US Mitchells. He tried to resupply it last week, or evacuate it, who knows, but my Avengers and Dauntlesses at Torokina pounced and blew him outta the water.
Americal division is almost fixed from the blunder at Port Moresby a couple of months ago. Up to 370 assault points. I'm pondering diverting it to SWPAC and Borneo. the 6th Australian Division, which was my ill fated Bali expedition, is up to 130 assault points as it recovers in Sydney, quite a way to go yet. The US RCTs which were involved in PM are in a pretty bad way and need at least another month off.
Japanese garrisons seem to be everywhere in SOPAC, he has Gasmata, Rabaul, Lae, Gili Gili, all defended by brigade size units. Given there isnt much point advancing here - the only thing of value is Truk and I aint going to try to land there - I'm sticking to my plan of letting the place wither, with all his bases in Avenger or Vengeance range and so cut off.
CENTPAC
Kwajalein has been being bombed constantly by Mitchells at Majuro and heavies from Tarawa. I'm slowly amassing power enough to feel secure in another assault. About a week ago my submarines north of Luzon were attacked by Japanese Kates which makes me think he's moved his carriers back into the Central Pacific. This means I aint doing any more amphibious assaults until my own carriers are ready for action.
He has Akagi (hit by a submarine torpedo around January-ish, not present in the Battle of Tarakan) and Kaga (not seen for a long time), Ryujo and presumably some other CVEs/CVLs as well. I intend to counter this potential force in CENTPAC with two Independence class carriers + Formidable and Indomitable. Formidable is down to 5 sys at San Diego and so will soon be released for duty.

The Avengers still seem to be equipped with duds more often than not, a lot of 22 inch torpedoes seemed to not explode. Swordfish and Barracudas therefore punched above what their numbers would imply with their functioning fish. Not bad, only a couple of ships sunk though, and the rest will be stuck in Singers harbour for a while.
Then the rest of the turn had my heart in my mouth as attack after attack from Palembang and Singapore came at my CVs. My fighters were got kilt by -Nates- of all things, even though they outnumbered the enemy pretty drastically. Carnage was inflicted upon the Jap airfarce but a good 40 or so bombers and torpedo bombers made it through the CAP wall. Fortunately the only hits were two hits on a US CV with nerf bombs that actually hit the belt armour despite being dropped by divebombers at altitude - my damn good luck there - and two nerf bombs that hit an escorting battleship and bounced off.
In the end 200 Jap a/c were shot down in exchange for 50 or so Wildcats, and I dinged up quite a few ships as you can see, but damn, the risk was not worth the reward. Theres still a lot of firepower up in Malaya, the lions den, and swapping a CV for a few APs seems a poor exchange. I'm pulling back a bit, out of range of Singers. I'll go for Palembang again on the way home, though.
I moved the Allied CVs within four hexes of Singapore today. A very tense turn.
I found a sizable Jap convoy at Singapore unloading, and it got bombed rather badly.

Bugs. perverse bugs
For shits n giggles I told everything in Chungking to leave.
It worked. CHungking abandoned. Just as a bugtest, really. I was thinking, if I can't move my units, maybe theres some land movement rule I don't know about which is stopping me from moving? No, there isnt. It was just buggy code not letting me do something really basic, like, you know, moving my units.

Anybody reading this? I've played HoI2 and Victoria for years now, post their final patch, which was also out fairly promptishly. And I've never had a single problem since.
So why people slag Paradox while WITP is still out there, is beyond me. We're using the latest patch, and China is basically totally f*cked, and purely because of bugs. The land movement system has screwed me elsewhere as well. So how the hell can anybody who plays and likes Matrix insult Paradox?
I am so not impressed.
Its just as well China is kinda expendable, at least right now.

The only positive thing is that... I'll be able to evacuate most if not all of the Chinese units to India, so its not really a big deal.
And having this huge force freed up for him won't do him a whole lot of good now he's lost naval superiority and I'm already able to interdict his oil. The whole Allied strategy is to go for his oil, all out, which is what I've been doing.
It is irritating in the extreme but the game will go on.
But. I will remember this next time the yammering fanboys are abusing Paradox. [:D]
RE: Bugs. perverse bugs
Had some personal issues which led to the game resting for a while. But! may be getting the ball rolling again.
Depends if Simon is up for it.
