Wellingtons continue their nightly attack at Dacca, no hits. We continue our daily Tezpur attacks inflicting casualties on the Indians and British.

We attack at Jameshedpur and get 1:1 results. We lose more men, but they lose more guns. We'll have to try again soon as it wouldn't take much to reinforce this place given the terrain helps the defense a lot.

In an attempt to ensure our tank unit can beat the 2/9th Armoured REg, we send Bettys from Timor to bomb the enemy unit since it is in clear terrain. They do well taking out 34 vehicles,which is almost the whole unit. Our tanks then attack, but unfortunately the 108th Anti Tank Regiment and 3rd Australia Brigade arrive just in time and we only get a 1:10 result and lose 17 tanks (3 destroyed). The defender is showing a supply penalty though, so that is a bright spot at least.

With all the big troop ships at Raoul Island, we send I-121 to lay some Type 88 mines there. I-2 is there also hunting for big ships. I-2 takes a shot at DM Pruitt and misses, and I-121 takes a shot at DM Preble also missing. All these DM's makes me think the mines won't be there long.

We get a sub hit near Canton Island from one of Hiyo's Vals.

We try an attack on the Chinese we have trapped at Pakhoi and get 1:2 results, but 59:66 is close to 1:1.

Our last couple units near Chungking are finally forced to retreat by the Chinese when they do a shock attack. They outnumber us by 4:1 and get a 7:1 result. We take a bunch of retreat casualties. Yuck. At least some units escaped without getting ejected and we did kill a lot of Chinese in the course of those attacks and I'm sure burned a lot of their supply.

The skies are quite today - neither side launches any air attacks, or ground attacks for that matter.

DEI/N Australia
An odd attack today. The 3rd Australian Bge and 108th Anti Tank regiment attack our tank unit. I would expect them to roll over me, but the final AV is 1:3 in our favor. We lose 4 tanks (1 destroyed) and hang out another day. The attack has a disruption modified, but no ops mode or anything that would cause me to expect such a crappy result for the enemy. Oh well - I'll take it.

We resume our air attacks on Tezpur, but nothing from the Allies today.

We try another attack on Jamshedpur and only get 1:2 results because the 23rd Indian Division arrives. Although I think they are still in strat or move mode, it is still enough to allow the enemy to hold the base. I think I will pull some troops out and see if we can't slowly surround this base, or at least make progress in a different fashion. I think 2 divisions will be enough since the terrain helps us too on defense. All the troops in Jameshedpur can't defend Calcutta, so keeping them tied down here works just fine.

We try to encourage a second bad attack from the Aussies by sending our Bettys to bomb them, but this time they have some F4F-3 and P-40E's up. We lose 13 Bettys in the attack, but only 7 pilots at least. We still get through and cause 163 casualties too. However, the 3rd Australian Bge remembers to load their guns today and gets a 9:1 result. Still only 28 adjusted AV though, from disruption and fatigue.

China
We continue bombing the large stack of Chinese near Chungking since they are in the clear terrain. With their low supply,hopefully it takes them a while to restore disabled squads.

Up north, we push back the retreating units towards Kashgar by another hex.

No air action from the Allies today, while we continue hitting the 26th Indian and 70th British at Tezpur.

DEI/N Australia
Chittagong airfield goes to size two, so a few more fighters will be based here. More importantly, it will be a good launching point for Tina paratroop drops if the opportunity presents.

Today, three of our tank units catch up to the retreating Wyndham Base Force unit west of Katherine and we destroy the unit outright.

China
Air attacks continue on the Chinese in the plains of Chungking.

India/Burma
The Allies are back with heavy night bombing on Chittagong. Blenheim IVs, and B-25C Mitchells attack but score no hits. I might put some Nicks on night CAP here.

Our attacks on Tezpur are disrupted a bit by a half dozen Buffalos flying CAP. We lose 6 Nells, 6 Sallys and 6 Anns, so those Buffalo know their stuff. We do still get through and hit the two divisions.

Up north in India, our Paratroopers are forced to leave Patna by an attack from the 88th Indian Brigade. They will head to Asansol and help garrison that base.

At the same time, we try a drop on Allahabad which is even farther north, but the 9/10 Baluch Battalion arrived just as we were dropping and prevent us from taking the base.

In an effort to stop fast transport convoys from resupplying Canton Island, we land the 65th Nag Guard unit on Enderbury Island, just east of Canton Island. The base is empty and we secure it. We will park an AV here and put float planes on search. Also, we will put a light cruiser TF here that will attempt to interdict enemy destroyers bringing in supplies.

A lively day!

India/Burma
There is a heavy air offensive against Chittagong today, but our CAP is no slouch. First in the night time, several small waves of Blenheims, B-25C and Wellingtons attack the port, but score no hits. In the daytime, enemy Albacore bombers come in after our transports, but their escort lags behind. Our CAP of Oscars, Nicks and Tojos easily shoot down all 11 of the enemy bombers. Next Mohawks arrive and we shoot it out with them, killing six but losing five Oscars and a Nick.

All is not perfect though, as we have some Anns and Sallys that I left the range too far out on and they go after a TF at Calcutta. We lose six Anns and four Sallys to the strong enemy CAP of Hurricanes and P-40E Warhawks.

Farther west, we try a port attack of our own on Cochin. First Oscars sweep the base and meet no enemy CAP. Then our Bettys from Colombo attack and manage to score some port, fuel and supply hits and also put two bombs into SS Swordfish.

The best news though is that our troops manage to capture Silchar with a 3:1 result. The enemy units retreat to Imphal, losing 2400 men, 25 gun and 110 vehicles in the process. This frees up our 5th Division to head north and join the attack on the 70th British and 26th Indian Divisions. This also opens the rail route from Chittagong all the way to Tezpur, so we can get our reinforcements in behind the British & Indians faster.

Surprisingly, the xAP Monterey at Raoul Island hits one of our sub-liad mines. 1 Vehicle is reported as destroyed on the damaged ship. Hopefully it was a tank. Next up, our Nells from Suva fly down and take another try at the transports. There is a CAP of 5x Kittyhawk 1A up, but our Nells manage to eveade them. The G3M2s miss with their bombers, but the G3M3s put two torpedoes into xAP Rangitata. Not sure if the ship sunk or not.

We manage to inflict over 500 casaulties with our bombing runs on the Chinese out in the open near Chungking today.

Up north, when our tanks attack the Chinese units on the road to Kashgar, they apparently are tired of running and all four units surrender. Not much of a haul given there were only 300 troops left, but at least we can get to Kashgar faster now.

Our armored car unit get 1:1 results at Kiuchan today and drops forts to zero. That is better than usual. Maybe the armored cars will take the base on their own before reinforcements arrive from Urumchi.

India and Australia Summary

I know it can be hard to see what is moving around in these two theaters from day to day, so below are a couple theater wide shots, and some notes that attempt to explain what is going on in each.

India
1. This is the area where the 26th Indian and 70th British are making their way northwest on the road to try and escape our pocket. The dot base southwest of Darjeeling is Rangpur and it is a critical base because of the rail line junction there. Following the rail line down towards Chittagong you can see numerous units on their way. We have the 2nd Armor division on the way and it will make its way up this rail line. Meanwhile the 5th Division and other smaller units will make their way up the road from Silchar (the dot base southeast of the "1" on the map) and trap the Brits from the back. First is the goal of trapping them, and then we will bring enough troops to ensure we can force their surrender. Once this pocket is closed, we will have a clear rail line from Chittagong to Jessore and we can then make a serious offensive move on Calcutta if it still looks weakly held.

2. We have the larrge and highly experienced 48th Division sitting just east of Calcutta at Jessore. It will sit there and present a threat to Calcutta for now. At Jameshedpur we have 2 divisions and an HQ to hold back the Indian units from attacking our northern flank. The 2nd Division just came east and stumbled on to a Air HQ unit, but once that is cleared, the 2nd will attempt to cut the rail/road line southeast of Jamsshedpur, while paradrops will drop out to the west and block the western rail line. I have a third of a division sitting northeast of Calcutta to prevent and sudden moves from the Allies in that direction as well. Another portion of that division is garrisoning Asansol, and another is heading east to assist with blocking the British and Indian divisions.

3. Finally, you can see on the southern edge of this circle, the 65th Brigade, which is quite large, treking through the jungle. Once it crosses the river, it will move up towards Imphal and link with the 56th/A division which is marching southeast on Imphal from Silchar. Together those two should be enough to capture everything over to Ledo. Taking Ledo is important because with the fuel from there, we will be able to keep the Heavy Indusry at Asansol running every turn, which gives us 200 supply locally produced.

Australia
Starting from the bottom, we have the 21st Division marching on Daly Waters. That division should be sufficient to capture the base, hopefully reducing supply flow to the north. The 21st won't hold Daly though, it will march north and help capture Katherine. We have the Broome landing forces plus some others marching to Katherine now, most of them are in the hex just west of Katherine. 3 or 4 Nav Guard and SNLF units, as well as two tank regiments are there. The Japanese LCU northwest-west of Daly Waters is a weakened Armor unit, but it can still move fast and affect hex side control in the upcoming manuevers here. The 33rd Division is also enroute to Wyndham and once it arrives it will march to Katherine and join with the appropriate units to march on Darwin. With any luck we can take Darwin by October or November.

We continue to bomb the British and Indians as they make their way up the road. We are trying hard to keep them out of move mode. Ahead of the bombing we sweep with Zeros and find 2 Buffalo and 4 Kittyhawks. We kill 1 Kittyhawk and 2 Buffalos and lose 2 Zeros to ops.

Some Mohawks sweep Chitagong, and we trade 2 Oscars for 2 Mohawks.

The Tenth USAAF that we stumbled upon between Jameshedpur and Asansol is easily ejected from our supply route by the 2nd Division.

DEI/N Australia
We try another sweep at Darwin with our Zeros and again don't fare well against enemy P-40E. 24x A6M2 vs 25x P-40E and we lose 9 and only kill 5. At least we only lose a total of 4 pilots from all causes today.

Pacific
Near Canton Island, our sub I-20 finds the SS Growler and hits the enemy sub with a torpedo. It is unclear if that was enough to sink the enemy ship.

Bombing continues on the Indians and British.

Tezpur is freely occupied by our forces as the last Allied forces leave the base to run north. On the north end of the pocket, our 14th Tank Regiment bounces the 150th RAC Regiment out of a critical hex. This is good timing since it will allow us to establish control of all hexsides in this hex before the enemy troops cross the river. This means, all we have to do is not lose this hex, and we will have the enemy trapped.

India/Burma
The 65th brigade crosses the Chidwin river and occupies Kalemyo. From here they will march up the road to Imphal, Dimapur and eventually Ledo. Farther west, we drop paratroopers deeper into India at Sambalpur and capture the unoccupied base. From there we will march northeast and cut the rail line going to Jameshedpur. We will march all the way to Jameshedpur and if we're lucky we can close their west facing hex side.

25x P-40E Warhawks sweep Chittagong and meet our CAP of 15 Oscars and 12 Nicks. The battle is fairly even over all. The Oscars take 7 losses while the Nicks dive down and take out six of the P-40's with no losses to themselves.

Milne Bay forts reach size 3. We'll stop there.

Our Nells attack at Raoul Island again, but today the CAP of 21x Kittyhawks is ready for us and we lose the full flight of 6 Nells. At least they were the older M2 model.

India/Burma
Jessore airfield goes to size 2, Chittagong forts go to 2 and Dacca gets it 1st level of forts up.

We continue bombing the trapped British and Indian forces.

At Jamshedpur, the British are firmly entrenched now since the 2nd British Division arrives today to stiffen the resistance. We won't be taking this base soon, but on the bright side, all these troops are not at Calcutta.

We have two armor units and a recon unit attack at Katherine. They get 1:2 results against fort level 3. Not too bad for a probing attack.

I forget to stand down the Nells at Suva and they attack Raoul again. We lose 18 G3M3 and 6 G3M2 - ouch!

China
We try a deliberate attack on the Chinese trapped at Pakhoi and get 1:2 results.

August 12th, 1942


India/Burma
Some B-25C attack Dacca at night scoring 1 runway hit.

More enemy units arrive at Jamshedpur, today the Tenth USAAF HQ that we damaged a few days ago shows up, along with the 3/4 Ghurka Rifles Bn.

Pacific
Hoping to capture Sydney Island and use it the same as we are doing at Enderbury - a float plane outpost to stop fast transport runs by the US to Canton Island - we attempt to unload the 65th Nav Guard unit. Unfortunately, the Marines have already occupied the base and we find 5 inch guns blasting our ships. The 34th Combat Engineer Regiment and the 3rd Marine Def Bn are both report to be present. We get some troops unloaded but their assault fails and they are wiped out. A lucky grenade manages to take out one enemy gun. One of our landing ships, a small xAKL is sunk by the 5 inch shore guns.

At Enderbury, the enemy subs are in force. We find SS Skipjack and get two solid DC hits and several near misses. However SS Herring slips past and puts a torpedo into the large AV ship we have there. I think we can get the ship home for repairs, and we'll bring a different AV in to take up it's duties.

East of Ichang, our 58th Division and the 1st Ind Mixed Bge attack the two Chinese units present and force them out of the woods and back across the river to Ichang. The 58th will head south while the 1st Mixed stays to guard the river crossing.

Rangpur goes to fort level 2 - important just in case the Brits try to cross the river here instead.

Nine Hudsons attack Wyndham at night, getting 2 runway hits. Not bad given the near zero moonlight.

The day goes well as the 28th Division assaults Daly Waters and takes it on the first go with 7:1 results. The defending units are all armored units and we manage to destroy 161 vehicles in the retreat. We suffer 2 destroyed squads. The 28th will split up so that part can move south and bounce these armored units farther away, while the rest clears the road to Katherine to join the fight there. Then we will leave Daly Waters open when the 28th reforms at Katherine. See the map below for a better view of the situation.

One supply route is cut off[/center]

Yesterday, we saw what might be a fast transport force near Canton, and since I had the failed amphibious force leaving Sydney, I though it would be a good idea to send in three destroyers to cover my amphib ships as they returned to safer waters. Apparently, the enemy force either went to Sydney Island, or was returning from Canton via Sydney Island, because just east of Sydney, our three destroyers run right into the enemy force of eight destroyers. With rain and 3% moon, it quickly becomes a close range fight.

The US ships detect ours at 8,000 yards with their pesky radar, but surprisingly they don't score any hits at first. Our ships close down to 1,000 yards before scoring any hits. Lots of ordinance is thrown back and forth. DD Patterson takes 3 hits, DD Jarvis takes a hit and DD Balch takes a hit. DD Mochizuki really goes after DD Farragut though and hits with 5 solid shots and then delivers the coup de grace by hitting Farragut with a torpedo. Farragut goes down and the Allies withdraw. For our trouble, DD Kazegumo takes one non-threatening hit. Our sailors do well!

However, the fight isn't over just yet. One hex east of that battle, I-20 spots the group of enemy destroyers and fires off a spread of torpedoes but none connect.

Once the sun comes up, the KB which is lurking nearby, tries to get some planes up to find these destroyers. The weather is bad over KB and bad over the target so it is amazing any planes went at all. Despite the weather, 15 Kates and 9 Vals find the enemy ships and manage to put two 60kg bombs on DD McCall and one 60kg bomb onto Balch. Balch is on fire, but I doubt the small bombs threatened the ships. They will certainly get away tomorrow given their speed. Still, we did bag one destroyer and damaged a couple more for no cost.

The Allied air units hit Dacca again. Some B-25C and Wellingtons attack in the night doing no damage. During the day we receive sweeps from Mohawk IVs and P-40E Warhawks. We have a light CAP of Oscars, Nicks and Zeros up. We lose a Nick and an Oscar.

In order to buy us more time to fortify the river crossing, as well as force the trapped British to us up supplies, the 4th Tank Regiment and the 5th RF anti tank unit had moved into the hex with the British and Indians yesterday. The enemy attack today and get 6:1 odds against our units which retreat south. This means I should be able to get one more third of a division in place before the enemy crosses the river in 2-3 days. Hopefully that will be enough to hold while the rest of our reinforcements arrive.

More reinforcements arrive at Jamshedpur in the form of the 7/12 Frontier Force Battalion. I don't think they yet have enough to eject our highly experienced troops from this jungle, but I'll keep watch on the enemy troops.

Ar Raoul Island, the enemy sends their minesweepers in and one of them sweeps a mine the hard way. AMC Killegray strikes a type 88 mine. I believe the ship sunk.

Night attacks on Dacca score nothing. During the day, 23x P-40E Warhawks, followed by 8x Mohawk IV sweep Dacca. For maybe the first time this war, we put a very large CAP of Tojos and they do very well against the enemy planes. We have 14x Zero and 80x Tojo up on CAP at the high point. We lose 2 Zeros and 4 Tojos but take down 12x P-40E and 6x Mohawk IV. 3:1 is pretty good for us, especially given that a lot of these Tojo flyers are fairly new still. Over Dacca means our pilot losses are low as well and we only lose 2.

Today the enemy fighters are back at Dacca. They come in higher today, which makes them tougher, but we have about 70x Tojos up at first, though they slowly get worn down. We manage 1:1 results today, but only lose 7 pilots. The waves come in as 23x P-40E, then 12x Hurricane I Trop, and then 16x Hurricane IIb Trop. Seems like some old planes. In any case, we lose 16x Tojos, but take out 8x P-40E, 5x Hurrican I and 3x Hurricane IIb.

Our armored cars try a shock attack at Kiuhan and manage to get a 2:1 result, capturing the base and forcing the 4,200 Chinese there to surrender. Nice to have this base cleared out finally.

A little quieter here today as the Allies stop their sweeps and switch to bombing our troops at Jamshedpur. The jungle makes it tough on them though so our troops take very little damage.

We continue bombing the British pocket. They will probably cross the river tomorrow. Fingers crossed that we hold against the shock attack.

DEI/N Australia
Southeast of Katherine, we have a tank regiment that moves in to block the road. The 3rd Australian Brigade comes out to clear the way and easily forces us off the road with a 6:1 result. We lose a dozen tanks.

China
In China we shift our bombing to Kweilin in support of our first deliberate attack there since we reentered the base. It goes okay with 1:2 results and we drop forts from 3 down to 2. We take a bit more casualties than the enemy, but they are posting a supply negative, so hopefully we will recover faster.

Our planes continue their bombing on the British pocket even as they cross the river and finally assault our hastily assembled defenses. The constant air campaign and efforts to keep supplies cut off pays off as we are able to hold against the assault and the Allies get results of 1:50. The enemy 6/9th Jat Battalion is lost in the assault. I'll still wait for some bigger units to arrive before we initiate our own attacks to wear down the enemy troops, but I think we have them in the bag now.

Meanwhile enemy planes continue their attacks at Jamshedpur for little results thanks to the terrain. I'm fine with them attacking there, they get some ops losses and we don't seem to suffer much in the way of ill effects.

The 65th Brigade bombards at Imphal to see what is there. I'll wait for the other unit we have coming from Silchar before launching actual offensive action.

A third of the 28th Division attacks southwest of Daly Waters to bounce the enemy armor units one more hex. They lose another 21 vehicles and we gain one more hex of breathing room. Our unit will now double back to Katherine. Hopefully these enemy units don't have much supply which will make replenishing the losses from retreats take a while.

One of our larger minelayers, CM Okinoshima, while en route to drop mines at Port Moresby, gets hit by a torpedo from SS S-23. The ship will lay anchor at PM for now and pump out what it can. I'll send some escorts to try and get the ship home through the Allies subs that are lurking south of New Guinea.

Enemy planes from Darwin attack us at Katherine causing minor casaulties.

We get a aerial hit on a sub near Milne Bay.

Allies sweep our mines at Raoul immediately, but one of the sweepers hits a mine and sinks so our mines still accomplish something.

Near Tahiti, I-16 takes shot at APD McKean but misses.

China
We start bombing Kienko again. We'll try another offensive on this base shortly.

India/Burma
An Allied unit moves into Darjeeling and gets a free occupation of the base. This doesn't affect us at the moment, but I will send a unit in to take it back shortly. The British and Indian divisions try a deliberate attack today, and it goes worse than the river crossing with 1:454 results. They still outnumber us 20,000 to 13,000 so I'm not ready to counterattack yet, but I don't think they are going to be able to breakthrough our troops.

It has been a while, so we try an attack at Tienshui where we have had about 125,000 Chinese held up for a long time. We manage to get 1 1:1 result which is very encouraging.
