Soviet Turn 109

Resistance has ended in Moscow, the remaining two Rifle Corps from the 47th Army surrender after an overwhelming German Infantry attack. Losing Moscow in 1943 was unexpected, my opponent played the game well. Stavka is not happy, and the Soviet nation is in mourning.

Now it is a race to recapture Moscow and then continue onwards to Berlin before the end of the game.

The German Army attacks east of Tula attempting to slow down the Soviet offensive, but the Soviet Guard Armies counter-attack isolating 3 German Divisions, which are then attacked.

You know its been a bad week for the German Army when the elite Grossdeutschland division and Rommel's old 7th Panzer division are routed together.

The Soviet advance continues towards Tula.

The Soviet strategy to win the war is not one of maneuver and encirclement but of attrition, a war the Axis cannot win.

It is always a good idea to isolate the elite SS Panzer divisions so that they receive no supplies the next turn, reducing their offensive capabilities (west of Voronezh).

1) I just don't understand how the Germans are able to have such a high unit density. Stacks of 3 divisions up and down the front just seems incredible.

2) Although this broad front approach is working, why not mass for a decisive breakthrough somewhere? The unit density is not going to go down as the Germans retreat since the front will just shorten the further they fall back towards Germany.

The German Army had transferred a large number of their infantry divisions and all of their mechanized units that were previously in the Moscow area further south to counter the Soviet offensive between Tula and Stalino. As a result they have reduced their defenses North of Moscow, often to just 1 infantry division per hex. The Soviets have also started an offensive against the Finnish Army in the Lake Ilmen area, which I will show in a next screenshot for turn 115.

The German Army is approaching 3 million troops and I think that the Hungarian and Rumanian Armies are on the point of breaking due to heavy combat loses and the fact they are now routing often after a retreat. My goal is to continue the war of attrition until the spring of 1944 and then with a much weaker Axis Army attempt to create decisive breakthroughs.

I'm surprised their fort levels are so low. Unless you have been leading them into a trap.

Edit: BTW, this is an area where cavalry would really shine considering all the dense terrain.
