As the enemy TFs withdraw after this rather unsuccessful raid, CVL Ruiho gets hit again. Will she make it back? Allied happiness at finding Noumea able to fend for herself (for now) is tempered by allied inability to stem the Japanese offenssive in northern Australia, where Daly Waters is now threatened[8|]

Daly Waters has fallen. Only good news is Cooktown has been retaken, and an outnumbered Japanese garrison will soon be eliminated.
What to do about northern Australia remains to be seen as we approach the first year of war.

Nice to see someone is still following this. By the way, the map was incorrect in the last post. I edited it with the correct one.

Updates are more scarce now. My computer time is limited lately, and when I can get to it, I play rather than post. I will try to update at least weekly; more often if needed.

Cooktown freed

Post by kaleun »

BBC world service. 10 Downing street infromed today that Cooktown in Australia has been freed from the Japanese invaders. The enemy troops, faced with unsurmountable odds prefered to die in a last charge rather than surrender. The government of the dominion is now free to concentrate in counterattacking in the Daly waters front. At least one US division and additional regimental and supprot forces have been loaned by our American allies to support the Australian war effort.

When selecting the hex, does it show a name and the port/airfield size below the map?

I remember you had some problems with your pwhex.dat some time ago. Did you notice any other oddities on the map recently?

A more strategic question: do you think northern Oz is defendable at all in CHS?

I haven't checked since the base is unoccupied. I will check when I next get a turn back.
No, aside from the TF that is stuck in the grey map area, there have been no further problems.
And no, I do not think northern Oz is defensible in CHS. Then again, I do not see what freeboy will gain from this foray, except for the fact that I always play a "political" game, and the citizens of Oz demand that the evil invaders be expelled post haste from the continent. As a result, one division, and some more troops from the US have been comitted to the defense of Australia. I'd personally prefer to use them elsewhere, but FDR promised the Ozzies at least one division.

And a victory is provided. The Japanese launched yet another offenssive, or perhaps a probing attack, against Noumea and Koumac. Their forces were divided in three task forces. One, a battleship force, approached Noumea, with the intention to bombard it. It was attacked several times by level bombers, but they failed to inflict any damage. A second, smaller ,cruiser force bombarded Koumac. It was in tercepted by some PT boats. A third task force, with an undetermined number of carriers stood distant and provided air support to the battleships.

The enemy battleship and cruiser forces are withdrawing in disarray. CA Mizuma, crippled, tries to reach Luganville, but, after the drubbing she gets from the Dauntless, she shouldn't make it. Yesterday's victory has a price as the carriers launch a very successful attack on the battleships at Noumea. The P38s were busy at the time escorting the Dauntless, so they had no bearing in defending the battleships

December 8th 42

The battleships and cruisers have withdrawn to Luganville. CA Mizuma finally sunk as expected. The carriers are still farting about Noumea, but due to bad weather the allied airplanes failed to attack.

Can you tell me how that huge surface battle played out Pedro? I'm just wondering if the battleships closed to 2000 or 4000 yards as the naval combat perpetually allows. That must have been fun and time consuming to watch! Sucks when the enemy bombers undo your good work during the evening though!

And Bill just sent one of those emails asking whether I sit down during combat replays!!![X(] Either he is screwing with my head like the evil little Tojo he is or I'm in for some doodoo.[8D]

The cobat replay was not synchronized; I know I sunk those cruisers because I confirmed it with Bill, but I wasn't able to see the sea battle.
December 9th. The enemy carrier force approaches Noumea very closely, however bad weather frustrates the efforts of the pilots on either side to avenge their losses
