For American football, the CLEVELAND browns became the Baltimore Ravens. I guess for some reason Baltimore likes Browns but changes their names . . .

For American football, the CLEVELAND browns became the Baltimore Ravens. I guess for some reason Baltimore likes Browns but changes their names . . .

I have a woodpecker having a grand old time on the side of my house this am. Every time I go out, it flies off but then comes back 5 min later. You would think with all the trees around it would prefer them to knocking through paint....another hole to patch.....

The only reason for a woodpecker to keep pecking at your house is that it detects bugs in there and is getting some for its efforts ... Do you have termites in your area?

Have never seen a termite here. Though the wasps and bees have been off the charts crazy the last couple of days. Didn't know if the peckers go after anything other than grubs. It finally gave up late morning but added a decent hole in the cladding. Thankfully we were planning to replace the cladding on that side of the house sometime this year (if allowed [8|] so I didn't feel the need to buy a shotgun and take it down.....might need the shotgun for other purposes however.....

Not so. We routinely have had woodpeckers in the area that get on top of metal fence poles and rap against the top of the pole to make loud "PING!" noises. We've also seen them do this behavior on top of fireplace metal covers. That makes a really loud noise inside the house. They're making loud noises to all other potential rivals that THIS is their territory and finding particularly resonating ways of getting the word out.

Then again, when we lived in Minnesota, we had a couple of pileated woodpeckers (think "Woody") absolutely destroy a tree of ours in the backyard. Within a couple days, they rendered it unsalvageable. THAT was probably some insect infestation.

Good info - it would seem simpler to learn a song though and not subject your brain to that kind of rattling. Must be the teenage punk woodpeckers.

I would almost attest to the last time I went to meet the Woody and told it to 'please stop' that it actually listened. Likely wishful thinking, but one can dream. Is it legal to buy a lotto ticket in NY right now?????

Woodpeckers tapping on anything is a territorial call. They tend to like metal things like flashings or metal sidings or gutters because they're loud. Brings out the Ringo in them. They like hollow trees for the same reason, though there will be bugs in dying or dead trees. They use their beaks to pry them out. They like peanuts and suet and will sip from your hummingbird feeder too.
