That Dylan reference put me in mind of his "Apple Suckling Tree" lyrics.

"Old man sailin' in a dinghy boat
Down there
Old man down is baitin' a hook
On there
Gonna pull man down on a suckling hook
Gonna pull man into the suckling brook
Oh yeah!"

Yep, the master of the disregarders.

Put my faith in the people

So, I turned the other way,
And I carry on anyhow.

If only Ramses had had panzers, he would have driven Moses into the sea, staff and all...

Speaking of great disregarders, how can we ignore...

19 pages is such an unidistinguished accomplishment that it can easily be disregarded.

Which Naples, Naples, Florida or Naples, Italy? I suspect the former.

We were just up from Posillipo. It never occurred to me to pay attention to where everyone here was from, but I should realize that we oddball wargamer types are scattered around all over the place.

My "traveling companion" and I were only in town for about a day and a half finalizing the boat transaction and heading out for several days of pretending to be Odysseus or Jason or somebody ... didn't even make the obligatory Pompeii trek this time around.

Who knows? If I don't do something stupid and sink the thing, I may get back up your way. Southern Italy has always been one of my favorite haunts over the years...

For my next nautical adventure, a couple of old veteran friends of mine are coming to spend a month with me, and we plan to set out on an ancient military history cruise, to include a few days on the Peloponnesus looking over what's left of Sparta, then on to the places that give their names to all that magical stuff, like Corinth, Salamis, Piraeus and Athens, around Attica and up to Thermopylae, Potidaea and Thessalonika, a few days along Turkey rummaging around the probable site of Troy, then back down through the islands to home. Should be entertaining enough for three geezer landlubbers, eh?

As a kid I remember moving from MN to Austin TX. While wandering in the town I came across a statue dedicated to something like "Our Confederate War Dead". To myself I thought "Do they know who won"? I slowly edged away, as to not grab attention, and decided to head north at the next opportunity.

I swear, there's a layer of stupid in Texas practically unknown anywhere else. The times it has been my misfortune to be there, I have seen many people - some in positions of responsibility - who must have a public servant who walks up behind them from time to time and whacks them between the shoulder blades with the flat side of a shovel to remind them that they have to breathe in and out...

Then there's my sister. She was born and raised in the upper Midwest, then moved to Texas after marrying a truck driver. Within six months, she was talking with that godawful accent and even using their colloquialisms.

I come from such refined stock, you see.

And I carry on anyhow.
