Just the one attack. In Central China the 27th Army, supported by a Garrison unit attacks the Chinese Communists in Soochow.

There are no less than 3 shifts for the weather to a lousy 1:1 but the +1 tempts the Japanese into action.

Do the Chinese want to use the Assault or Blitz table?

In the absence of hearing from Orm - and because I cannot save the game on this screen - I decide to choose on his behalf.

Sadly the roll was not good. A 3, becoming a 4 meaning that both Japanese units are destroyed.

The Japanese rebase a NAV from Shanghai to Haichow.
The Germans rebase a FTR one hex in northern Russia

And the turn ends on a 3.

A Chinese partisan turns up so I e-mail game to Ormster for its placement.

Axis rolls 6 on the initiative roll and Allies roll a 4. But 4 is enough since Allies had a +2 on the die roll and wins ties. After some pondering and cursing of the lack on convoy production Allies decide to go first.

The new weather roll was a 7 modified to a 9.

No declarations of war

CW and France take a naval impulse.

No Port Strikes. No naval air.

Western Allies send out plenty of convoy escorts. They also send fleets to the North Sea, Western Med as well as Eastern Mediterranean. Their submarines sail for the Italian Coast.

CW send three cruisers to the Arctic Ocean and the hunt for Väinämöinen is on but the extremely bad weather makes it an almost impossible task.

CW send a TRS (loaded with INF) and their liner (GARR) to East respective West Med.

No strategic bombing. No ground strikes. No rail movement.

Communist Chine liberate Shanghai and Hangshow. The Shanghai territorial abandon the Japanese cause.

In order to continue I decide to rebase the bomber to Formosa.

Communist China concentrate on Haichow, the last Japanese controlled city in Northern China.

USSR make an automatic attack on a partisan in Persia.

No reorganization.

Jan/Feb 1941
Impulse: 4

The weather conditions remain er…. challenging. Hitler calls a meeting with the Nazi top brass and in a marathon session that lasts 48 hours, a conclusion is finally reached. Hitler delivers Fuhrer Directive No.33

The somewhat inclement weather experienced since the invasion of Poland has meant that the war has not proceeded in a way conducive to the general good health and well-being of the 1,000 year Reich. In trying to ascertain the reason for this, we have concluded that carbon emissions are to blame. Henceforth, the 3rd Reich will be building only eco-friendly tanks, warships and aircraft, meaning a 50% reduction in harmful carbon emissions by the year 1944. This policy, we believe, will also have the added benefit of helping wildlife (a subject dear to our hearts) and in particular the Polar Bear population in the Arctic and environs.

In this way, we hope that the weather will turn nice and sunny and so our armies will soon be on the march and we can pursue our enslavement and ultimate destruction of all Slavs, Jews, Communists etc etc

A.Hitler
Fuhrer of the caring, sharing, feel-good Nazi Party.

Meanwhile back at the front……

The Japanese and Germans choose a Land and the Italians a combined.

The Italians put a Sparviero into the Eastern Mediterranean. I shall assume that the CW do not want to intercept as they have a loaded transport in the sea zone.

The Germans rail an infantry corps and an anti-tank unit to Riga, and an infantry corps to Cernauti.

The vaunted German 7th Panzerarmee proceeds at a snail’s pace from Konigsberg to the forests of Lithuania, while in the south the Hungarians and Romanians begin to smell the coffee and retreat (er sorry, re-position themselves) toward the west.

The Italian Liberation Army of Tunisia decides that Tripoli looks a better bet than Tunis and heads southeast toward the Libyan capital.

In China the Japanese decide that the pesky partisan from Peking in the southern forests needs attention, as does the Chinese garrison in Kweillin. The latter is a risky 2:1 but this is no time to muck around.

Does Chiang want to provide HQ Support? The Chinese air cannot alter the odds so assume this will not fly?

Does Chiang want to provide HQ Support?
Why not? It is not that he is likely to succeed. [:D]

Edit: China selects the assault table.

The HQ Support for Yammamoto fails on a 7 and fails for Chiang on a 4.

So we have a 2:1 no modifiers in the Assault table (I thought in a city the Assault table had to be used?).

The fractional odds bring this to a 3:1.

An 8 is thrown. The defender loses which unit? (the remainder are shattered - and I do not convert) at a cost of disorganisation of all attacking units.

If Yammamoto's HQ support had worked that would have been 4:1 - 2 Chinese dead and no disorganisation [:@]

(I thought in a city the Assault table had to be used?).
It is always a player who selects which land combat table to use. Either the defender or the attacker. Never the terrain. The terrain, in some cases like cities, just calls for the defender to decide what table to be used.

And for a short while I considered using the blitz table but I didn't like the increased possibility for the Japanese to stay organized. Looks like I called it. [:)]

You did - but then the screen came up all yellow and said 'China is assigning losses to units' so I thought perhaps it was not my call to make [;)].

The Germans re-base a Stuka and a He-100 to Army Group North's front.

No declarations of war.

France take a combined impulse while CW take a land.

No Port Strikes. No naval air.

US continue to transfer battleships to Pearl Harbor.

France search for the Italian convoy but no luck this time.

No strategic bombing. No ground strikes.

4th Siberian Corps is transfered from Persia to Ukraine.

CW continue to liberate Tunisia and advance towards Tripoli. The Chinese withdraw and reform their lines.

CW disembark a garrison to Malta and a infantry to Libya.

No land combats. No reorganization.

Well with the weather continuing to take the mickey there is not much can be done.

The Japanese put a small fleet into the China Sea carrying the crack Hiroshima Militia (be afraid, be very afraid).

The newly designated Army of Libya consolidates around 'Fortress Tripoli'.

7th Panzerarmee moves into Eastern Poland and German units retreat in order to straighten out the lines.

A couple of Kwantung Army units head for Port Arthur.

A Heinkel fighter rebases one hex in Northern Russia/Belorussia (I don't actually know where the border is).

And the turn ends on a 5....

Axis wins the initiative roll with a 10 against a modified 9. Since Warspite1 is offline I assume he will go first.

The weather roll is a 9 modified to a 12. Very high weather rolls in this game. [X(]

But in Spring this means nice weather. Curses. [;)]
