Were you able to "control" the sequencing ? I can control to some extent, but not to the extent that it appears in your battle here !!
No not really - I did have the TB etc TF go one hex out on retirement allowed and hoped they would intercept first - the rest just happened. I knew they were coming due to some sub recon but I thought there was only one TF with BBs and the other had CAs.
I think we both got hit pretty hard but I am lucky being in a friendly Size 9 port and he has to get back - I have some stuff chasing[;)]
Wow, the line of Japanese battleships on fire That's a nice sight.
Why didn't you retreat a couple of hexes north to let coastal guns brush against the invaders first? And then your destroyers would have swarmed all over them on the way back, giving you a few kills - remember Tsushima?

What was your impression, aircraft finishing off cripples or do you think you would have had these results against undamaged ships?
I am not sure what the bomb penetrations are but most of the older Jap Battleships have deck armor around 60 or 70. I doubt the 100lb bombs were doing anything but what about the 230lb GP and 240kg GP bombs?
The 18" Mk VIII has a penetration of 320 vs. belt armor of the older Battleships of 229. The 5 torpedo hits I sustained in an air attack in my game did only minimal damage, but it was a penetration of 320 vs. 305 to 356. The USS New York (305) took two torpedoes and sustained some flotation damage, system damage in the 20's. The other 3 Battleships basically shrugged them off.
I am still trying to figure how this works and what to expect.
I think that the bombers were just finishing off the job. However, earlier in the scenario - it will be in the AAR somewhere - one of my torpedo bombers from the CV Argus struck a BB and sunk it.
I have set some of the bombers to quite low altitude - not sure if this has a better effect - I haven't read the manual ([:-]) about bombing heights so i don't know if it has a similar rule to the 6000 feet rule in WitP

I don't have the combat reports available but an attempted invasion of Wake Island has ended in disaster.
Recon reports by subs and ships in the area suggested the island was garrisoned by two Japanese units comprising some 8000 troops. US units were somewhat surprised to unload over the beach and face 4 Japanese Divisions and over 60,000 men.
In future I think any invasion will have to be preceded by some sort of suicide squad to assess the strength of the enemy. 25,000 men have been lost and the remainder of the invasion TF is now headed back with their tails firmly between their legs.

Funny really - wonder where those divisions were stashed !? ( the scale on the pic is a little fuzzy but it is 1000 yards ) ... we probably need ahouse rule about stacking on atolls for the defender and about maximum allowed attack force. I'd vote for a regiment to defend and a division to attack, and the division if successful must be withdrawn ( reduced down ) to a regiment within a week after taking the atoll.
