Hmmm., a target rich environment. HQa with torpedoes is only 2 days out from Balikpapen.

Now the question is are you better off putting out fires at a level 2 port, or at sea on cruise with another ship?

I really thought there was going to be something here!

A portion of the IJN strength at Balikpapen...

Will the Allies make a rush seeking to inflict maximum damage, or will the size 4 runways scare them off?

Image

I'd double check those captain's if I were you. 41 leadership isn't really someone I'd want on a BB, let alone commanding my main SCTF in-theater.

Granted, the leadership value influences experience gain, but you're wanting to stack EXP as high as you can with the IJN, so that when the Allies get the quantitative advantage you can still depend on high EXP.

The early war is your best chance to build EXP, and you can push it through the roof with some care. It pays dividends down the road - especially with the CA's.

He is mid 60 in Naval and low 60 in aggression...which for me is sufficient. Have to be honest but normally I don't care about selecting leadership in naval commanders generally.

Plane losses for the day...

tracker has 6 PBY's going down.

what does the LR denote in the Hudson III (LR)?

I believe its Long Range or something to do with Radar, IIRC there's all of one squadron until much later in the game.

A look at the Army light bombers.

Today i converted the shuttered Ida factory over to Ann...making 22 a month when fully repaired. I also have the Sonia factory you start with making 30 a month..which is too many. I don't plan on fielding a large Sonia contingent this game.

My longer term plans is to convert a lot of these squadrons over to fighter bombers. It costs roughly 10 PP per plane...270 PP for a size 27 Sentai for example.

To afford this PP cost, I am withdrawing units very early. I got 54 PP today from withdrawing a size 27 Betty sentai early.

Fighter Bomber pilots have a rigorous training regime. They need to be good in Air, LowNav, LowGround, Strafing and Defense. I will probably target squadrons for special purposes...but the training of these pilots has already started to some small degree.

A look at Burma

Good AA and supply is offloading at Bangkok today, all the way from Honshu. They will head north, to protect Rangoon and Magwe once I take them.

I will try and get 10,000+ supply at Moulmein so I can create small ships. I have a plan for barges, mtbs, and midgets here. Might not be able to do it.

AFAIK, LowNav & LowGround take effect only when flying @ 1000ft. Above that is NavB & GrdB, below Strafe.
At 1000ft planes still only drop bombs, and they use bombs AND guns @ 100ft during strafing runs.
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage.

Jan 1, 1942

I get fairly clever, and the jury is out if this will work or not. But at Balikpapen I stood down almost all my ships, and of course the Allies come calling with everything.

We torpedo two cruisers, but the Allies naval bombardment is set for the daytime...and trashes both fields. All ships in port are safe and full of ammo, 1 BB, 11 CA, 17 DD. They will sortie out into the depleted ABDA ships...but with the runways closed and 40 zeroes destroyed on the ground, the Allied CV are free to run wild.

Only the Boise TF is left with relatively full ammo...but the covering Allied surface fleets have expended their torpedos, while the bombardment task forces have expended their main gun ammo.

It is going to be a blood bath.

Both CL seemed to be in serious trouble from their animations and messages...but knowing my luck, they are probably still afloat.

At Samarinda:
Round 1 goes to the Allies....

At Samarinda
CA San Francisco, Minneapolis, Houston and 3 DD. The CA's bombarded.

At Balikpapen:

Prince of Wales, Repulse, Northampton, Chester, Mauritius plus destroyers. No DD's bombarded Chester and Northampton fought surface engagements too.

Salt Lake separated out because of a torpedo hit.

Honolulu, Boise (1 hit), Phoenix (1 hit) fought in surface fights.

1 BB, 1 BC, 6 CA (1 torpedoed), 7 CL (2 very bad), lots of destroyers. 3 Destroyers heavily damaged.

All his surface ships have expended varying amounts of ammunition.

Working on the turn...and I again am going to put my faith in multiple small task forces at Balikpapen and swarm the narrow waters out to 6 hexes hoping he has brought the Lexington up.

All squadrons will have safe settings for aerial threats and Jolo for home port. Putting a lot of faith into the local commanders...

Turn is in Allied hands, and tomorrow will be an absolute bloodbath most likely!
