Actually, we have a cat. They are much smarter than dogs, and natural hunters/killers. Independent, and stealthy.

I like my cat. He returns to base, gets fed and petted, and goes out on his next patrol mission. There are no mice or moles around my house. Purr-fect. [:D]

They're also stealthy enough to carry out a cat's main aim in life, which is to go unnoticed whilst crapping in everyone garden but yours .

Personally , I think domesticated cats should be eliminated. Why.? Because they are killing off the wild bird population.

This has taken an interesting twist. [;)] Zap, I'm speaking personally : my cat is not a bird killer. He's a vermin hunter. The trophies he leaves on my front porch are the aforementioned moles. In my neighborhood, the bird population is quite extensive. Just the other day, I saw a WV State Bird (The Cardinal) on a branch outside my kitchen window. That is a beautiful creature, indeed.

In some areas of the country domesticated cats have decimated the wild bird population. I live in the mountains and have chased away someones cat lying in wait to kill a beautiful humming bird.

Yeah, cats are tough on the bird pop. We can lay the blame squarely on those who dont spay or nueter them and those that abandon them. We have 2, keep 'em indoors. However on a cat I had in my earlier years, I pried birds out of her mouth  on a couple occasions. They both flew off. Of course, that was probably the last time she bothered to bring in what she caught!

My personal experience on the cat issue has been that they are far more effective as vermin exterminators (when I actually owned a house, my cats decimated the mole population) and only rarely, very rarely, caught the occasional robin.

I'm not really a cat lover (I'm definitely a dog person), but they have their place in society and in the wild.

that's the truth. hey, as for vermin control, I once owned a beagle who caught gophers! And we haven't touched on the benefits of owning fish yet

Our two cats (Ragdoll breed) aren't even allowed outside as a breed thus they don't kill anything. This works out great since my wife is an animal lover (One reason we have our own zoo)

Given we don't live in the country vermin control really isn't a problem. The only vermin around here are people...

Actually I was originally a dog lover, but the particular breed mentioned act more like puppy dogs than cats anyway so I suppose Ive not really been swayed. Our youngest follows us around all day and insists on sleeping right by us every single night. She is very affectionate throughout the day as well. Our eldest cat even greets strangers and follows them around the house...

Perhaps this twist isn't so strange after all. Given that I'm basically a loner, it only seems natural that I prefer a cat as a pet. Sure, they need some attention, too, but for the most part they are content with doing their own thing. [;)]

Hasn't been a problem in areas where there were already native terrestrial carnivores. On the other hand, isolated areas like the Hawaiian Islands and various other Pacific Islands have had native populations of birds and other small animals devastated when animals like cats, rats, and snakes have been purposely or inadvertently introduced.

I agree with the to the extant that a responsible person who shares a household with critters can monitor and take the appropriate steps to adjust behavior.  I got 4 cats and 2 don't hunt, 1 is a WMD and I had to put a bell on her collar which actually solved the problem.  Jack the male of the pride is just too doofy catch a cold....though he tries (it is funny to watch)....we also have a feeder and sense the bell no birdy casualties....now (Nellie) brings home live field mice in the attempt to  teach me hunting skills.
