John Smoltz tossed his 3rd shutout of the season and the Braves edged Houston 1-0. The game's only run came off the bat of Andruw Jones, who hit his 16th homer of the season in the 2nd inning. The Astros loaded the bases in the 9th off an obviously tiring Smoltz, but the Atlanta ace survived. Smoltz allowed 7 hits, walked 1 and struck out 10.
Before the game, catcher Brian McCann was activated, but did not play. McCann currently has a 13-game hitting streak, and had raised his average to .299 before going on the disabled list.

The win raises the Braves' record to 35-29, their most games over .500 thus far in the season. They go for the sweep tomorrow, with Jorge Sosa (6-3, 2.86) taking the mound.

The Braves were beneficiaries of some AI problems, as Houston pitcher Phil Barzilla allowed a whopping 16 runs in the 7ty inning. He allowed 5 hits and walked 14 men. Brian McCann went 2-for-3 and extended his hitting streak to 15 games.

The Braves enjoy an off-day before traveling to Florida for a 3-game series.
