Rabaul raid hits 3 CVs!!!

Operation Valkyrie Analysis

7 bombers lost on the raid. but 7 bombers is worth the price of some damage to tigers carriers.

Hit Assessment:

Hiryu:
250 llb bomb hits: 1
500 lb bomb hits: 1

Soryu:
500 lb bomb hits: 1
Critical damage reported

Ryujo:
250 llb bomb hits: 1

Damage assessment: *Maybe* moderate to severe on Soryu, maybe mild on Hiryu, perhaps moderate on Ryujo

Several 500 pounders also hit Kongo, but i want torp hits on BattleBarges not bomb hits. You really should be able to give target priority lists to bombers. surely they couldve directed a few more bombs in the direction of the carriers

Nice hit! As the IJN, you have to be extremely aware of B-17/24 ranges. You can't ever park a valuable ship within 15 hexes of a size 5 or greater Allied Airbase. A good Allied player will find out and do what you did.

Unlike Real Life, Rabaul in WITP cannot be considered a Naval Base until Port Moresby is captured. Mistake on Tiger's part.

Rabaul raid hits 3 CVs!!!

Post by marky »

In todays war news the Imperial Japanese Navy, under-estimating the damage its raids have done on Port Moresby in New Guinea, inexplicably based 3 of its carriers at Simpson Harbor in Rabaul!!

Acting on this, the Supreme Allied Pacific Forces commander, Fleet Admiral Marky, in conjunction with the theater commander Gen Claire Chennault, ordered a massed bomber attack on Port Simpson yesterday. Today, in an operation code named "Operation Valkyrie", 80 of the nearly 100 US and Allied bombers made a daring low level daylight raid on Simpson Harbor and obtained several hits on all 3 enemy carriers and several battleships. Several of the capital ships, including all 3 enemy carriers, were reported to be on fire by the attacking allied planes.

Though 7 of the bombers were lost and 59 damaged, Admiral Marky and Allied Command are calling this a major coup, to the detriment of the Imperial navy, and Adm Marky was quoted as saying; "Guess he should be alot more careful about where he ties up the KB!!"

For the Allied War News Network, im Rick Roll, signing off until next time.

29 May 1942
Summary

SoWestPac: a glorious day for the allies with the success of Operation Valkyrie. there was not the anticipated epic retaliation, though there was a bit of it. im guessing that tiger couldnt get enuff planes into Rabaul. but, i am also guessing that tomorrow there will be a truly epic reckoning in the skies over PM. no doubt many screaming imperial eagles will be set upon the base in revenge. so the choice is to launch a pre-emptive strike on the airfields at Rabaul, or withdraw every bomber that can be and stack the base with fighters for the welcoming committee. quite a few of the bomber pilots have good experience, and it would be foolish to waste them, especially since the Coral Sea is infested with imperial subs. speaking of subs, im having my boats head for Truk, as im sure tiger will not keep them at Rabul, but rather head for that aforementioned bastion for temp repairs for his wounded queens. sure glad i put a minefield there, maybe ill get lucky again and theyll hit a few.

SoPac: Carriers have RVd with Spruances oilers, and most have fueled. they RV with halseys oilers tomorrow. if they still eneed fuel, theyll head for Palmyra. since KB is splintered, and tiger is deprived of at least 2 carriers for the time being, i intend to launch a counter offensive in the area ASAP with Halsey leading the charge. theres a golden opportunity to strike back and strike back hard, and with Soryu and Hiryu and Ryujo out of the picture temporarily, it must b taken advantage of.

India: the offensive against Myitkina, is on again. im calling it Operation Sapphire.
Kohima will be the major airbase in support of the offensive against Myitkina

China: several corps are marching to plug a gap in the lines near Canton. more troops are heading for the front, all forts are being built up.

Rabaul raid hits 3 CVs!!!

Tigercub apparently wants to start over [X(]

wants to start a new game from the beginning. weve gotten into june nearly, a month in less than a month. weve both made good progress, and despite Soryu Hiryu and Ryujo being hit and damaged, i think he is still in quite a good position

hes at Baker, he has Canton, hes got nells at Canton and can attack any convoy headinf for australia, i have either to abandon australia and NZ and the SoPac and SoWQesPac, or commit to a fight there, with still largely prewar forces and 5 carriers and 7 obsolete battleships and the North Carolina, along with a shortage of modern destroyers, indeed, destroyers period, while he still has some 7 or 8 carriers with better planes and pilots except for the SBDs and all 4 Kongos, the Yamatos, the Yamashiro and Fuso, Hyuga and Ise, Mutsu, and numerous heavy cruisers

and he wants to give up [:(]

apparently Valkyrie had as much effect on tiger as the doolittle raid had historically

maybe im too aggressive...
