29 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) 30 Dec (Far East)

An ASW TF encountered and cleared mines at BAKO. APD 37 hit a mine. This unlucky vessel later ran afoul of S-38, took two torpedo hits, and sank (of course). The mines were sub laid - subs are a real irritation - but finally most sea lanes are getting clear enough to use - and the remaining numbers of subs are small enough to concentrate on and drive away (or sink). One sub was sunk in the South China Sea just to being overcome by flooding during this turn. Later in the night the ASW TF attacked - and missed - S-38.

4 DD of a larger TF discovered USS Grayling at Midway - and engaged her - scoring one hit (no fires or major damage). If Midway is substantially undefended - subs are present in force - and Poly did have an air stinger - as we shall see. Later in the night Grayling attacked BB Kongo - the torpedoes failed to detonate - and was counterattacked and missed by 4 DDs in escort.

5 MSW units detected and attacked - but missed - USS Pompano at San Fernando - where they were sent to clear still more mines.

Dutch sub KCVIII at Maasin torpedoed PG Hashidate - which was lucky - there were carriers, cruisers and laden transports present.

The for Kongos bombarded Midway - 106 casualties, 4 guns lost, 4 other hits.

The day turn began with the CVE force attacking Cebu with 27 Kates escorted by 15 Claudes. 18 airbase related hits.
11 Ki-36s out of Legaspi, escorted by 9 Ki-27s, 5 Zeros and 3 Claudes, and in company with 3 Ki-15 recon planes - followed up immediately. 7 more runway hits.

109 Vals escorted by 21 Zeros and 7 Petes - hit Midway. 1 Val shot down by AAA. No CAP. 1 SBD and 2 PBY destroyed on the ground. 9 casualties, 85 airbase related hits. These did not shut down the airfield - as we shall see.

11 Blenheims attacked the 18th Division at KB - causing 4 casualties.

A massive air strike on the ROC 23rd Field Army (on the Rail line West from Shanghai) caused 133 casualties and 4 guns lost. 1 bomber lost, 1 damaged by AA - both dive bomber types - meaning they came in MG range of the ground.
A follow up attack by stragglers from the main raid hit the 88th Field Army in the same hex - causing 27 more casualties.

36 Bettys out of Truk hit Lark Force Battalion at Rabaul - causing 7 casualties.

3 B-17s out of India failed to harm a fragment of 33rd Division in Burma.

13 SBDs at Midway ignored a heavy surface action group and a carrier group to go for the transport group - 60 miles to the west. They put a 1000 pound bomb into AMC Asaka Maru - missing to actual CLs - and not engaging any transports. 6 were destroyed and 1 damaged by the 24 Zeros on LRCAP. 1 Pete was also on local CAP.

9 Ki-21s out of Thailand put 4 bombs into the CW Hinzada Dhou Group at Hinzada.
17 niore put 5 bombs into CW River Tanker No 3 - but missed another river tanker - at Mandalay.

An air support unit - bound for Davao - landed at Tacloban - in spite of orders not to land!! Figure that one out. Tacloban starts the game with a garrison - but there was no garrison any more.

9054 Japanese in about 8 units conducted a shock attack at Rabaul. Fortifications reduced from 2 to 0. 3 to 1 odds - but the position held. 84 Japanese casualties, 2 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost. 36 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost. No Japanese units demoralized - so the position is weak - and the attack can continue tomorrow. Still - it was a good defense by weak troops - only 1762 Allies remain at Rabaul - including a support unit.

47 000 Japanese attacked the 24 000 Chinese on the RR West from Shanghai. Typical of the luck we have had in China - even when we are strong and in supply and he is weak and out of supply - he wins the die roll. Only 1:1 odds - the position held - 584 Japanese casualties and 25 guns lost. BUT 735 Chinese casualties, 22 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. This is a weak position - the Japanese were NOT demoralized - and the attack will continue. 100,000 troops are arriving in this area - and will soon clear it out- we will then drive West along the rail line.

Japanese bombardment at Kuala Lumpur caused 6 casualties. Poly has somehow jumped on the LOC in the center of Malaya - no way to get there but he did - so the campaign will stop driving South to eat this unit - which prevents supply flow. Fighting for LOC is good practice.

Another Allied attack at Wuhan failed - 31 casualties and 2 vehicles lost vs 7 Allied casualties. We might bo back if he continues to hang up
Allied bombardment at Nanchang was ineffective.

Allied bombardment at Manila caused 5 casualties

The Philippine Army 101st "Division" at General Santos attacked the survivors of an air support unit which landed from a torpedoed ship there.
They immediately retreated to Davao - thanks. No casualties. It would take a month to walk to Davao!

Allied bombardment at Rabaul was ineffective.

30 Dec 1941 (Hawaii) New Years Eve 1942 (Far East)

The night turn began with DD Reid hitting a mine (laid by surface minelayer) at French Frigate Shoals, setting her on fire. These mines were laid in the first days of the war when we were hunting carriers in the area - just so this might happen.

USS Gar missed an AK at Midway. The escorted counterattacked and hit Gar - causing some flooding.
The Marines put up 777 CD shots vs a landing force also at Midway for 60 hits on 10 ships. DD Nenohi, AP Nichiai Maru and AP Shinkoku Maru heavily damaged. AP Monji Maru, AMC Kinyu Maru and AK Asuka Maru set on fire. 536 casualties, 11 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost to troop cargo or beach defenses. 11 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost to counterbattery shelling from the warships. When the smoke cleared the next day - this was just the main action but fighting continued througout the night and day - one transport was scuttled and all the rest of the burning ships had to run for ports to have any hope of survival.
Late night fighting at Midway involved 163 more CD shots for 6 hits on DD Arare, 1 on DD Hatsushimo and 2 more on CL Tatsuta. No major damgage - they may be small shells. 41 casualties to beach defenses as langings continued.

The day turne also opened at Midway with a strike by 102 Vals escorted by 21 Zeros and 10 Petes. 9 Vals were shot down and 10 more damaged by the AAA fire - which was heavy. 4 aircraft destroyed on the ground in partial compensation. 59 other airbase related hits.

8 Blenheims attacked the 18th Motorized Square Division in Malaya causing 9 casualties and 1 vehicle lost.

20 Bettys out of Truk hit the Lark Force Battalion at Rabaul - causing 13 casualties.

18 Ki-21s put 3 bombs into 2 river tankers at Hinzada, Burma.

9101 Japanese attacked 1691 Allies at Rabaul. 11:1 odds. The position fell. 50 casualties and 5 guns lost. 1506 Allied casualties, 2 guns lost and 38 vehicles lost. This attack was by the (reinforced) Imperial Guards Brigade.

6370 Japanese attacked 3125 Allies at Midway. 21:1 odds on the first assault. The position fell. 5 aircraft destroyed on the ground. 239 casualties, 12 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. 2167 Allied casualties, 74 guns lost and 2 vehicles lost. So how did we attack 3125 men but only 2167 surrendered????

50 000 Japanese attacked 26 000 Chinese at Nanchang - and failed to achieve odds. I cannot explain the way combat works in this game - it is not like any other I have seen. 480 casualties and 19 guns lost. 363 Chinese casualties and 7 guns lost.

37 000 Japanese attacked 14 000 Chinese at HK - same story. 586 casualties, 46 guns lost, 4 vehicles lost. 131 Chinese casualties, 7 guns lost and 2 vehicles lost. Fort level still 4.

In spite of problems, 100 000 Japanese are about to join the fight in Eastern China - and we will clean this up in January. The Allied move was correct - challenge the land LOC.

Japanese ground bombardment at KL caused 3 casualties.

Undefended Luangprabang Laos fell to ground assault.

Allied bombardment at Ichang China was ineffective.
Allied bombardment at Wuchang/Wuhan was ineffective.

Allied bombardment at Manila cost 11 casualties and 1 vehicle lost to 16th Division.

The enemy failed to appear with carriers to defend Midway - so it is going - like Johnston Island - to be a forward post - no doubt bombed to smitherines - and subject to counter invasions in 1942. This serves our intent well - and we will run in CD, AA and supplies - but no major defense - permitting submarines and carriers to respond when and if possible - vs the invaders and their long LOCs. We love to fight over things we don't need.

New Year's Eve 1941 (Hawaii) New Year's Day 1942 (Far East)

The night turn began with an attack by 11 DD on USS Trusty at Cam Rahn Bay. No hits.

Troops landed on New Ireland to engage the remnants of K Force.

USN sub Plunger detected, attacked and sank AK Asuka Maru SW of Midway. Two other ships - an AK and a DD - are too badly damaged to scuttle and likely to be lost before they make port. The choice to defend with bombers and submarines was not able to save the island - but it did hurt the invasion forces.

Dutch sub O-16 missed AK Sanwa Maru in the Gulf of Thailand.

2 PC and 5 DDs detected, attacked and missed US sub USS Sailfish at Saigon.

17 Bettys scored 1 runway hit at Malacca. 26 Zeros ran into no CAP. 2 bombers lost, 3 damaged by AAA.

37 Zeros swept Manila - but no CAP to oppose them.

8 Blenheims caused 8 casualties to 18th Moriorized division in Malaya.

16 Ki-48s and 10 Ki-43s caused 33 casualties to the Indian Army 8th Brigade in Malaya.

6 P-35s failed to harm a MSW unit at Legaspi. 6 Zeros on CAP also failed to harm the fghters.

18 Ki-21s put one 50 kg bomb into an already damaged river tanker in the Bay of Bengal. Only the fact fuel cargo exploded and caused major fires may result in the loss of this vessel in due course.

Japanese ground bombardment at HK caused 4 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost.
Japanese ground bombardment at Manila caused 12 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost.
Japanese ground bombardment at KL caused 7 Allied casualties.

33 000 Chinese at Ichang attacked 6600 Japanese in a brigade at Ichang. 12:1 odds Fort Level 3 (don't ask how the fort level went from 2 to 3 in one day) - and the position was abandoned. The unit retreated to Wuhan - which was the intention - but a trail prevented it. Nothing remains at Wuhan except the supply sink - and we are letting the position rot in terms of generating supplies. We are going to take the RR and road LOCs parallel to the river before returning. Forces at risk due to isolation are beign cut out - this being the last one. 316 Japanese casualties, 9 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost. 131 Chinese casualties, 7 guns lost.

Allied ground bombardment at Nanchang caused 9 Japanese casualties.
Allied ground bombardment at Manila caused 18 Japanese casualties.

1 January 1942 (Hawaii) 2 January (Far East)

The night turn began with 11 DD detecting, attacking and missing USN sub Sailfish at Saigon. I love the revised ASW model of RHS - and the difficulty of engaging successfully - doubly so with ships dropping patterns of 2 small DC like these.

Japanese ground assault vs K Force on New Ireland achieved 3:1 odds and the unit retreated again. 8 Japanese casualties and 1 gun lost - NO Allied casualties.

Japanese ground assault with 4300 troops in central Malaya vs 2200 Allies achieved 7:1 odds. 23 Japanese casualties, 2 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost. The enemy did NOT retreat.

3 January 1942 (Hawaii) 4 January (Far East)

The night turn began with landings at New Ireland - hunting the remnant of K Force. 92 casualties.

SS Thresher missed AO Kyokuto Maru SW of Midway.
In the next impulse - 5 DDs attacked Thresher in the same hex - and also missed.

23 P-40s swept Canton - met 11 Ki-27s on CAP - and everybody went home undamaged!!

6 ROCAF SB-2s out of China failed to do anything in a raid on Luangprabang Laos.
12 more caused 2 casualties and 1 gun lost to the 2nd Reserve Regiment in South China.

30 Zeros swept Singapore. 23 Buffalos met them. At first the Buffalos did well - getting first blood - and repeating that twice. But then they got tired or something - and some bugged out. 3 Zeros lost, 6 Buffalos lost.

10 P-26s escorted by 2 P-40s attacked the 16th AA Regiment at Manila (not too clever that). 1 got shot down.

8 Blenheims caused 19 casualties, 1 gun lost and 1 vehicle lost to the 5th Motorized A Division in central Malaya.

A JAAF strike caused 80 casualties and 2 guns lost to the ROC 88th Field Army in China.

38 JAAF bombers of 2 types escorted by only 2 Petes and in company with 2 Ki-15 recon planes - caused 33 casualties, 2 guns lost and 1 vehicle lost to the Indian Army 8th Brigade in Malaya.

3 B-17s out of India caused 11 casualties to a detachment of the 33rd Pack Division in Northern Burma. We are flying in troops every day - and have complete control of the main RR and supply sources along it - so Burma will soon fall.

3 Beauforts (probably from Manado) missed a DD at Davao. 6 Zeros on CAP achieved nothing.
3 more missed a DM in the same place.
5 P-35s out of Cebu missed an AK South of Davao. That seems to be excessive range.
Then 3 more Beauforts missed a DM at Davao again.

Japanese ground bombardment at Nanchang Central China caused 160 casualties and 3 guns lost. About 100 000 Japanese troops from the Upper Yangtze are arriving in the Singapore area. Some will ship out - some will join a drive West along the main rail line.
Japanese ground bombardment at HK caused 48 casualties and 4 guns lost - to the JAPANESE!!!
Allied ground bombardment at Nanchang caused no casualties. Just as at Manila below - there are many Japanese troops here - so the chance of casualties is small.

Japanese ground bombardment at Manila caused NO casualties. It appears as the opposing force grows in size - the chance of casualties declines.
Allied ground bombardment at Manila caused 14 casualties and 1 gun lost for the Japanese.

Japanese ground bombardment at Kuantan Malaya caused 15 Allied casualties.
Japanese ground assault on the unit on the central RR line of Malaya - which probably cannot retreat - achieved 25:1 odds with 7600 troops vs 2000 Allied troops. 14 japanese casualties, 1 gun lost. 18 Allied casualties, 1 gun lost, 1 vehicle lost.

The night turn began with IJN mineclearing at Linguyan Gulf.

USN sub Pompano was attacked and missed by 3 ASW units at Maleolap.

12 Bettys followed up but failed to do any damage.

5 P-35s missed DD Tomozuru near Lucena - where it was part of an ASW group.

An IJN PC unit attacked and hit USN sub Stingray near Luzon - probably saving 2 APs in company.

71 000 Japanese attacked 25 000 Chinese at Nanchang - 1:1 odds (this is a Japanese city) - 1283 Japanese casualties, 53 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. 540 Chinese casualties, 21 guns lost.

Japanese ground bombardment at HK caused 5 casualties and 1 gun lost.

Japanese ground bombardment at Manila caused 34 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost.

Ground assault at Bhamo Burma drove the RAF No 4 Forward Air Station of only 170 men from the hex. 8 Allied casualties. 98 : 1 odds. The unit had been badly hurt by bombing and previous attacks.

Japanese ground bombardment at Kuantan Malaya was ineffective.
To the West of Kuantan, 7500 Japanese attacked an Allied brigade unable to move. In spite of 12: 1 odds - 46 Japanese casualties and 33 Allied casualties.
To the West of that battle Japanese ground bombardment at KL caused 10 Allied casualties.

Chinese ground assault at Wuchang China drove the last brigade retreating from the pocket BACKWARDS - to Hanyang - so we are going to rescue it by riverine operations. 175 Japanese casualties, 5 guns lost, 1 gun lost, 183 Chinese casualties, 8 guns lost.
Next door at the third Wuhan hex a Chinese attack on the supply sink (which has no supplies) caused 61 casualties and 4 guns lost to the sink.

5 Jan 1942 (Hawaii) 6 Jan (Far East)

The night turn began with Japanese minesweepers detecting and missing USN sub Pike in the South China Sea West of Luzon. Not sure how the sub got there - is he trying to track enemy TF movement?

Mines were detected at Kwajalein by a MSW unit - and PR Shiretaka in port for repairs sank at Bako - showing up on the Kwajalein report.

The day turn began with an AVG sweep of Canton by 22 P-40s. 12 Ki-27s on CAP.. 3 shot down - but they took 2 P-40s with them - not too bad.

8 Philippine Air Force P-26s caused 11 casualties to the IJA 16th Mixed AA Regiment at Manila. 1 was shot down in reply.

8 Blenheims caused 35 casualties and 1 gun lost to the 18th Division in Malaya.

12 SB-2s caused 11 casualties to the 3rd Mountain Gun Regiment in Southern China.

A JAAF attack caused 11 casualties to the ROC 74th Field Army in East China.
Another caused the same to the ROC 70th Field Army in the same area.

2 Kates out of Rabaul failed to harm the K Force remnant on New Ireland.

5 P-35s missed a DD at Legaspi. 1 Pete on CAP was ineffective.

70 000 Japanese attacked 25 000 Chinese at Nanchang and got 1:1 odds (!!!). 1454 Japanese casualties, 25 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. 693 Chinese casualties, 18 guns lost. Japanese units NOT demoralized, however.
Allied ground bombardment at Nanchang was ineffective.

Japanese ground bombardment at HK caused 10 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost. HK has survived 10 days longer than history and won't fall soon.

Japanese ground bombardment at Manila was ineffective.
Allied ground bombardment at Manila caused 63 Japanese casualties, 3 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost.

5800 Japanese in an airmobile RCT of 33rd Division drove an understrength brigade out of Schwebo. 17 Japanese casualties, 8 Allied casualities, 2 guns lost. We have three towns North and West of Mandalay -and the enemy is substantially isolated with little option or supply in the remaining towns. The unit at Schwebo retreated into Mandalay.

7500 Japanese attacked 1800 Allies in Central Malaya. 6:1 odds. 26 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost. Only 15 Allied casualties and no retreat. Why??? We will pour more bombers onto this target tomorrow.

45 000 Japanese attacked 52 000 Allies at KL. 1:1 odds Fort Level 1. Fortifications reduced to zero. 663 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost. 125 Allied casualties, 4 guns lost.
