AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/07/42

Mike, he tell me he changed a lot of his IJA LBA over to Bettys --- thus preserving his IJN Bettys for naval action.

156 fighters from Tavoy try to close Ye.

Allied aircraft

P-40E Warhawk x 4
Kittyhawk I x 6
Lancer x 11
Spitfire VB x 16
I-16 Type 24 x 9

Lancer: 9 destroyed
Spitfire VB: 7 destroyed
I-16 Type 24: 7 destroyed
LaGG-3: 3 destroyed
MiG-3: 20 destroyed
Yak-1: 14 destroyed

Losses are heavy on both sides but, again, over 60 enemy fighters and pilots are destroyed. It all adds up and with Rangoon due to fall in 2 days time the closure of Ye is no longer an important issue. At this stage it can close and my forces will still be perfectly capable of projecting power into the waters off Singapore.

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

IJA ground losses are very high also. They've doubled in the last month from about 500 to over 1,000. In my games I try for a 20:1 exchange rate in ground points. So far the Japanese in this game are down to a 7:1 exchange rate and this is likely to shorten even more in coming weeks. The various invasion fleets are in good shape and swinging toward their targets---- slowly, ever so slowly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Midway Island [USA] at 97,63

Japanese Ships
SS I-121

Allied Ships
AO Robert L Barnes, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

This AO is toast but overall I've gotten about 350 ships through sub-infested waters and this is the only one which has gotten spotted. We are go!!! I'm sure he'll be on to me before I get ashore but, hell, that's half the fun. The USN is about to get CREAMED but in the doing it will create an opportunity for the Australians.

I'm down to about 15,000 tons of supply but soon I'll have enough leeway to devote a number of four-engined bombers and Coronados to flying supply missions into Manilla. That ought to help eke the supplies out farther.

This is a minor attack on the Oiler which accompanied my Royal Navy TF on the way to PH. I think I have faked Damian into thinking this is some sort of cunning ploy as it traipses past just 240 miles from Palmyra as opposed to being a necessary shortcut as it is COMPLETELY out of fuel. [:D] He has told me that he won't "sacrifice" his remaining Betties to such an obvious trap. *Chuckle* The man sees traps which aren't there. Let's hope he doesn't see traps which are there.

Actually, in Japanese, they would be the same name. "Tu" and "Tsu" are just romanization of the same Japanese sound.
My Japanese teachers would be so proud of me...
Delete the trackerdb.* files.
Copy the pwsdll.dll file from the game folder to the WitPTracker folder.
Try running the WitPTracker.bat again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1087 encounters mine field at Midway Island [USA] (97,63)

Allied Ships
CA Portland, Mine hits 1

I've been rather cold-heartedly sending shipping into Midway ( which I know he has mined ) in order to generate a mine hit. Finally one did. I've sold this to him as the rotation of my surface combat TF at Midway with replacements. Obviously though there is no such thing and my fleet has already left Midway. It is important to try to pretend its presence though.

In the meantime Wasp is on a maximum speed sprint to San Francisco from Panama. It is unescorted and vulnerable but a 95% chance of having a ship in place to help with the battle ( and 5% chance of it being damaged in port ) is better than a 100% chance of it sitting 2,000 miles away from the battle in which far more than a single CV might be sunk.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/10/42

Well, it is time to unveil my next target........... Manchuria. It is time to push the Imperialist aggressors out of the Rodina and back from whence they came. Already Soviet Tank brigades are pushing across country behind the Imperialist forces besieging Borzya while one of our Workers' Rifle Divisions is slogging across country to Arshaan. If the first blow ( the one from Borzya to Hailar ) fails I still expect some measure of success from the attack through Arshaan.

Why concentrate on a deadlocked front like the Soviet Union?
Well, it was my target all along. If you look back at what I've done over the last month it has ALL had the effect of :
1. Eliminating really significant enemy ground combat formations in Burma ( as well a gaining a positional advantage etc ). I've basically removed 4 enemy divisions from his Order of Battle and tied down another 5 Divisional Equivalents.
2. Drawn his ready reserves from Burma and Western Japan in to battle both in Burma and Vietnam. I have identified 3 Division Equivalents facing my Chinese forces in vietnam and have rendered another Division Equivalent unsuitable for further combat without a period of rebuilding.
3. Drawn his ready reserves from Central Japan towards Marcus, Wake, the Marianas etc. I'm sure he has 1 to 2 division equivalents on each of these island chains by now.

The overall end result is that now, a couple of weeks before I unleash any major amphibious operations in the Pacific his ground forces are as stretched as his aerial forces. So now is the time to take a devastating chunk out of them as removing a substantial portion of his land forces could destabilise his entire front at a time when he no longer has either the PP or actual reserve formations available in Japan to set such a reverse right. I'm also quite sure that if anyone looked at his last 6 weeks of turns they would show an outflux of troops and supplies FROM Japan to Burma, Vietnam and Marcus/Wake, Marianas, Noumea with nothing going to Korea.

My intention is to remove some 3,000 AV from his forces in Manchuria, blow a hole in his front and rush through it and exploit deep into the Manchurian interior. This will tend to draw troops in the China Area Army eastward but, again, he won't have the PP to pay for this and will run the serious risk of enticing the Northern Chinese troops into stabbing him while his back is turned.

All in all this will serve to absolutely fully commit his ground forces and ensure that absolutely none are available when my major Australian and American invasion fleets splash ashore. In other words it should obviate the possibility of any amphibious counter-invasions during that period of time when my footholds will be weak.

Obviously it is all a matter of timing and if he retreats into a Fortified Region before I can encircle him my plan will come to naught but if it works then the Japanese position should just unravel ever more rapidly.

Not at all a bad turnaround from when I took over 6 weeks previously.

LOTS of transports. I think he is flying men out of Rangoon and the Taung Gyri pocket. So, time to eliminate that Taung Gyri pocket... Tomorrow my men will be ordered to attack there and push the Japanese into the jungle. They will then follow them and push through the trails into Thailand --- all the while threatening to come out behind the 3 IJA division equivalents forming a barrier at Moulmein. This ought to collapse the Moulmein position cheaply and allow me to add the Moulmein British and Indian troops to the attack whilst avoiding the ruinous losses of frontal assaults against an enemy with secure supply lines.

See, I'm not always bloody. When finesse is possible and preferable ( quicker, cheaper etc ) then it is employed. So here we have the indirect approach employed.

Since I do think that one of the prime purposes behind AARs should be exposition of thought, doctrine and planning etc I would like to state again that if anyone has any questions at all or counter-arguments etc then please feel free to ask them or make them here. After all, this Soviet attack might be something Damian has not only foreseen but also prepared for. I've shuffled forces around a lot recently to make it look like I'm reinforcing Skovorodino at the expense of Borzya but really I was just pulling them out of contact and prepping them for this attack BUT it may not have fooled Damian at all.

Anyways, I'm always happy to answer questions, criticism etc.... or if someone just wants the turn files to look at themselves feel free to ask....

Surprisingly small IJA garrison for such an important objective. After all, you yourself pointed out that this makes the huge effort to close Ye essentially wasted -- Allied air forces can now project power over all of Malaya. Do you think this was due to your "shaping the battlefield" or did you simply catch Damian on the back foot with his forces unable to react in time?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

RE: Defeating the Devil !!! ( aka Damian )

Post by Nemo121 »

I think it was due to several things:

1. He brought most of his forces from Rangoon to Moulmein to try to close that and when it came to making a choice between keeping them at Moulmein or sending them to Rangoon in the sure knowledge that whatever he sent there I could send a couple of thousand AV in if push came to shove he decided to keep his troops at Moulmein so they could retreat through the jungle to Thailand when the time came.

2. He did have elements of two divisions at Rangoon but had airlifted out most of those troops. I've shot down some 60 or 70 transports in the air over Rangoon over the past week.

3. I think Shaping also had a role to play as it prevented him from assessing the threats correctly and apportioning forces properly.

But really I think it boils down to the fact that with the surprise of the operation and its multi-axial approach he decided to accept the loss of Rangoon rather than lose a couple of more divisions. As I said, I've got 5 of his divisions trapped in jungles or in pockets they can't escape from in Burma so I'm sure he didn't have another 2 divisions to throw away just to delay me for another week or two. This is another reason why I think his IJA reserves are at breaking point:
a) he didn't sacrifice a couple of divs for Rangoon because he didn't have them and
b) his committment of 3 divisions to Thailand and another division to Canton has to have written his reserves down a lot. If he'd had those troops available I think he'd hae tried to delay me at Rangoon.

Well, that's that settled then.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/11/42

So, today I decided to put Damian out of his misery and told him my next attack will be through Hailar and Arshaan. I think he's still expecting me to land momentarily in the Pacific ( at least that's what he tells me ) and while I am at sea my recent testing and TF composition shaping seems to have had the desired effect in terms of keeping my TFs unspotted. At my closest I was within 12 hexes of one of his searching land bases without being spotted. Now I'm withdrawing, refuelling and then I'll return along this scouted route and stab him in the vitals.

Why is the time not right yet? Well, Damian has been waiting for major reinforcements for some time now and he's due to get them. He is getting about 1500 AV of reinforcements over the next few days and there's no point in attacking BEFORE he has sent those reinforcements to Manchuria. No, far better to attack after he has committed this newly constituted reserve. About 1 week should be sufficient time for this reserve to be bought out and shipped to Manchuria on an emergency basis. He may have them already, I didn't take notes but I did note that a big reinforcement was due in the middle of the month so I'm not attacking big-time until a bit after the middle of the month.

It all looks very much like another bombing raid to kill transports but it isn't. This is part of the preparation for the next great wave of amphibious invasions. Hyperwar is, very shortly, going to be introduced into the IJA's lexicon. This time the presence of fighter cover will allow me to achieve my goals at significantly lower cost.

LOTS of FlAK at Bangkok. Amazingly these 14 hits caused the destruction of 60 HI points. Weird. Damian has complained about it and I agreed that the current modelling of HI damage from bombing is unfair to the victim as repairs cost too much and are too slow, especially when compared to the findings of the USSBS. The Pe-2s are stood down and I think that, voluntarily, I will refrain from sending them against HI in the future.

I ordered 1 Bde to conduct a probe to see the adjusted AV the Japanese can muster. Amazingly it is only 2500. Hmm, if I Shock Attacked I could generate a lot more than that.... Must resist temptation. No, I'll stick to the plan and slip the 3 Tank brigades around between the Japanese troops and Hailar whilst pinning these 12 division equivalent with a 2-division pinning attack tomorrow. If it all works out then in 2 days time I'll have my breakthrough.

It is also almost time to move most of my troops from the Eastern blocking position. I figure I need about 1,500 troops to defend that position and can free the rest up for offensive action through Hailar.

Especially if Damien's IJA forces are as thin as you believe because of the Burma situation. (And I have no reason to doubt your calculations.) I wonder if he's short of Political Points to move forces around?

Harlock,

Oh I think he is very short on PPs to move forces around... Here's my math. In 45 days since the game restarted he will have gained roughly 5,625 political points. An IJA infantry division costs about 1,000 PP to re-assign. I forced him to send one division to bolster Canton ( 1,000 PP used ) and then to send 3 divisions to Hue to hold off my Chinese troops ( now re-assigned to UK South-East Asia... not entirely but we're getting there since it was something I offered to do only after the fact as I hadn't realised Damian would view an ROC command invasion of Vietnam as questionable).... That's another 3,000 PP used. So, I've counted 4,000 PP which he has definitely used to counter my Chinese thrusts. Between airgroups, engineer units, HQs, support units etc I'm sure he's accounted for the other 1600 PP.

So, I think he must be crucially short on PP. He may have enough to move the reinforcements he either has just gotten or is just about to get and that's why I want to hit him in the Pacific only AFTER he has committed those forces to combatting one of my other thrusts.

I assume you meant the Japanese rather than the Allies.[;)] Yes, it looked like a good idea -- but Bombardment attacks are looking better now.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Any reasonable person watching this would see my ships anchoring off Midway waiting for it to become a Level 3 Port ( as it should do in about 7 days). That's all entirely reasonable and sensible.... which is why it is a fake-out. I've told Damian that I need to refuel and so on and so forth at Midway and also send my damaged ships back to PH. Instead, now that Wasp has sprinted to Midway from Panama and my CV strength is now 6 full-strength USN CVs, it is time to move out quickly and certainly to the next series of targets. Where are those targets? Well, I'm going to take out the Aleutians and Kuriles and then, if things go well, I might land a couple of divisions on the Sakhalin Islands. I'm not too hopeful of taking Sakhalin though as my USAAF fighter pool is currently pretty low and I don't want to expose my USAAF fighters to excessive loss right now. Better to take what I can, fortify it and apply gradual pressure westward.

Now that Burma/Malaysia is going so well there's no need to risk the BBOSS in a strike at Shikula etc when I can achieve the first phase of such an operation so easily and cheaply right now. If I were him I'd resist this attack on the Aleutians with everything he has as once I take them and encroach on the Kuriles I can island hop under LRCAP all the way to the Home Islands.

Harlock... Oops, the dangers of playing a different side in each of your two PBEMs raises its ugly head.

No bombardment... I'm trying to husband my supplies in China... The Chinese normally have about 1600 resource centres which give them some 1600 tons of supply per day. I've opened the Burma Road so that's an extra 500 tons and I've also taken Hanoi which gives me another 1,000 resource centres. So, my Chinese have about 3,100 tons of supplies per day. Add to that the fact that I've bought almost 1,000 AV out of China and am buying more and sending it to Burma as fast as I can in order to reduce the supply requirements in China.... I work on the basis that 3 fully-supplied Armies do a better job than 4 Armies with 75% supply... and I think my supply situation is good but there's no point getting cavalier and ruining it all with loads of bombardments.

Some would but bombardments are unlikely to be decisive unless the enemy's supply lines are cut and since the Jap supply lines here are in good shape I amn't about to waste supplies on anything indecisive.

TF 1047 encounters mine field at Rangoon [Burma] (29,33)

And now he sees shipping off Rangoon. Will he respond? Not in strength... I think he is just target-fixated on Java right now. He has completely bought the dummy. In the meantime my Ozzies are going to appear off the coast of Burma in about a month's time just in time to really, really mess him up in Malaysia.

I'd be happier if they were there now but the realities of time and space conspired against me.

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

Well, well Ye is finally and incontestably mine. Definitely time to kick off the base-hopping campaign. I can only lift 1 division per bae at the moment so I'll have to conduct the campaign in series as opposed to parallel ---- hich is what I would really prefer) .

Today I tol Damian that Midway would be Level 3 soon and assured him that I wouldn't replenish there until it did.... Thus anchoring the belief that I WILL replenish there when it reaches Level 3... I've told him it could take up to 1 week as I'm frustrated with the slow pace of repairs.

This is all pretty true except for the fact that I won't wait around to refuel. No, instead my fleet is already steaming north toward its real targets. I am willing to bet though that the IJN CVs are all heading back to port right now and this should give me a couple of days advantage oer the Aleutians.

You'll pardon me for remarking that the troops you still have look well able to hold the place -- the Japanese attack didn't even lower the fort level.

Nice maskirovka concerning your dash to the Aleutians![;)]

Either he has no combat engineers or, more likely, they've bought the farm. Can't remember if 0 to 1 means 0 to 1 in all cases or if there's a threshold where the odds are so bad (like the 1 to 4 here) where even engineers won't bring down the fort level.

Nemo,

You mention your current lack of supply in China. How long do you think you'll need before you can launch another diversionary/holding attack from there?

As always, enjoying the aar.

Harlock.... Absolutely. I've pulled out about 1500 troops and left 1800 to hold the Japs. This should be enough especially since the Japanese are sure to be sending a lot of troops to Hailar.

Anarchy: I don't have a supply problem in China at present. In fact I'm at least 50% up on what most people have in China BUT I am always very cautious with the supply situation in China as it is very easy to get seduced into "being aggressive", burn through 30,000 tons of supply in 1 month and then find that when the Japanese really have a go at you all of your AVs are downgraded by 75% due to poor supplies. Once I have a secure line of supply running from China, through Vietnam and into Thailand ( I have forces on the jungle trails in between Vietnam and Thailand) then I can be a little more free with the supplies in China and expend them in offensive action --- and it will serve a purpose then in pinning forces in China and not allowing them to redeploy to other theatres - but not now.

I think that most people just see the big offensives and massive loss rates ( although I would still argue that these high loss rates result in lower overall losses by keeping the duration of offensives down ) and think that it is all about "attack, attack, attack". I think that most people fail to see how much effort goes into using seemingly quiescent theatres to shape the success of the attacking areas and prevent the enemy from successfully countering the attacks.

It is like watching a martial arts match and just looking at the flashy blows and posturing etc but never seeing the footwork etc. ANYWAYS...
