Battle of Makassar, Part 1
19 Jan 42
ASW/Subs: R0-61 is attacked by 3 MSW at Cairns, but is not hit. She will move down the coast to Townsville. I-169 is patrolling 10 hexes NE of Pago Pago when a heavily escorted convoy of transports come by. She is able to put a torpedo into an AP, but the 7 DD escort hits her hard (damage 53/87). There are a Glen equipped sub and another I-boat between the transports and Pago Pago.
Borneo: 4 Dutch PT boats attack my transports at Singkawang at night and after a brief round of combat, a single PT is sunk by my MSWs. The Balikpapan invasion TF leaves Tarakan escorted by a 6 ship ASW TF and a SC TF (BB Fuso & Yamashiro, CA Chokai, 1 CL, 6 DD). A daitai of Zeros is assigned as LRCAP while other LBA is assigned to hit Sumarinda (next to Balikpapan) from Tarakan.
China: After the losses over Wuchow yesterday, I add another daitai of Zero to Canton and send in a sweep of 50 A6M2 Zero to face off against 5 I-16c. Three are shot down without any Zeros lost.
Philippines: The Luzon bases LBAs hit Manila. 8 A6M2 Zero provide escort for 7 G3M Nell, 26 Ki-21 Sally, and 50 Ki-48 Lily, and 5 Ki-15 Babs. The AF gets 28 total hits. 2nd Division at Clark is hit by 17 B-17D Fortress.
Malaya: 34 Ki-21 Sally go into Singapore without their Oscar escort and the 5 Buffalo I are able to shoot down 2. Then another strike of 52 Ki-21 Sally try their luck and lose 2 more. [:@] I need to follow 2nd ACRs advice and get wimpy leaders for these LB daitais. [8|]
Singapore's deliberate ground attack does not go well. [&:] I have an Army HQ in the hex and the Southern Area HQ back on the mainland with both prepped for this base.

RE: Battle of Makassar, Part 2
20 Jan 42
ASW/Subs: 2 DDs from the Fast Transport heading to Namlea from Kendari to move the rest of a BF to Lautem, miss hitting S-36 120 miles due west. O-21 is missed by my 6 ship ASW TF 120 miles west of Kendari.
Burma: At Rangoon, I send in 3 daitai (65 A6M2 Zero) to sweep away the Flying Tigers. He sends up 39 Curtis H81-3A as CAP and the fur ball is furious. Losses are about even (18 Zero to 21 Tigers). I don't like losses like this, part don't see how to take them out otherwise. I had moved a daitai from Canton to Saigon after last turn and they will move up to Bangkok to see if another day of action can wipe out the remains. I will need to disband part of the weaker daitai into the others and downgrade to Claude before sending them off for training. My air losses have been heavy so far and my training program is in full swing. He sends in 3 separate attacks of Wellington and Blenheim to hit the 33rd Division at Moulmein.
Malaya: I do another sweep of Singapore with 35 Ki-43-Ic Oscar and find Stuart has moved in 4 Buffalo I and 8 P-40E Warhawk as CAP. Again, losses are equal (4 planes each).
Philippines: The Luzon base LBA visit Manila again (almost daily routine). 8 A6M2 Zero escort 9 G3M Nell, 78 Ki-21 Sally, and 6 Ki-15 Babs. Airfield damage is very light (5 hits total).
Borneo: The LBA from Tarakan hits Samarinda with 12 Ki-43-Ic Oscar escorting 8 D3A Val, 25 B5N Kate, and 1 Ki-15 Babs. They brush aside 3 Brewster 339D and destroy 3 Martin 166 and 1 PBY Catalina on the ground. The airbase gets 11 hits total.

Really surprised to see Force Z that far north without any fighter support at all. Has to be satisfying to know this will no longer be a threat to future moves.

The Battle of Makassar Ends
22 Jan 42 Air losses are in (?).
ASW/Subs: SS Spearfish (at Balikpapan) and O21 (120 miles west of Kendari) are each hit once by my ASW TF.
Borneo: Balikpapan is hit by CL Kinu, CL Yura, CA Chokai, BB Yamashiro, and BB Fuso with only 2 coastal guns firing back. Damages are: 584 casualties, guns lost 9, and vehicles lost 4. The base itself is: Airbase hits 4, Airbase supply hits 7, Runway hits 30, Port hits 11, Port fuel hits 6, Port supply hits 14. I can just hope the "dice gods" play nice this time and give me a base with the economic assets relatively intact.
My LRCAP of 19 A6M2 Zero from Tarakan over the TF at Balikpapan encounters 3 CW-21B Demon (1), 3 Brewster 339D (1), and 4 T.IVa (3). The sole surviving TB gets to hit an AP with a torpedo.
Malaya: CL Danae, which is heavily damaged does another bombardment attack, but does no damage. Stuart has pulled out his fighters again and my 60 Ki-43-Ic Oscar just loiter over the target while 101 Ki-21 Sally (1) and 7 Ki-15 Babs get 51 hits total on the airbase.
Singapore - The odds are slowly getting closer to the magical 1:1 to reduce the fort levels. They will rest for a few days and try again.
Attacking force 124516 troops, 1156 guns, 4 vehicles, Assault Value = 2048
Defending force 71746 troops, 413 guns, 23 vehicles, Assault Value = 843
Japanese max assault: 1714 - adjusted assault: 1053....Allied max defense: 853 - adjusted defense: 1238
Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 6)
Japanese ground losses:
2133 casualties reported
Guns lost 61
Vehicles lost 1
Allied ground losses:

Philippines: Manila sees 8 A6M2 Zero escort 6 G3M Nell, 53 Ki-21 Sally, 21 Ki-49 Helen, and 5 Ki-15 Babs gets only 19 total hits on the airbase.
Battle of Makassar:
Mini-KB launches at the survivors. 18 A6M2 Zero escort in 18 D3A Val and 9 Kate to find
CL De Ruyter, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage SUNK!!
Soerabaja sees the port hit from planes launched from Kuching. 25 A6M2 Zero escort in 45 G3M Nell (1) and find 9 Brewster 339D (3), 6 P-40E Warhawk, and 3 P-40B Tomahawk on CAP.
MSW Abraham Crijnssen, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage SUNK!!
The LBA from Makassar gets in the action as 23 A6M2 Zero and 3 Ki-43-Ic Oscar escort in 28 B5N Kate.
BC Repulse, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage SUNK!!
Mini-KB gets in another strike as 16 A6M2 Zero watch the actions of 15 D3A Val and 21 B5N Kate.
DD Peary, Bomb hits 3, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage SUNK!!
DD Parrott, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage SUNK!!
Note: My forces will retreat to Kendari to resupply and take on replacement aircraft and have the last CVL get her Claudes replaced with Zeros. Then, I will head over to Bali and close the southern escape route from Java. A Naval HQ from Formosa was loaded on transport ships and ordered to go to full speed for Kendari. I thought about using Tabbys to base hop, but this will be done in 10 days. Meanwhile, a loaded TK TF at Palau has my one and only AR added to the TF and they will head to Kendari. My 4 chutai of Tabby at Kendari are ordered to pick up an engineer rgt from Lautem to help expedite the port expansion - Port 4(2) 21% with 36 engineers present. Another lesson learned and passed on to other novice Japanese players - move your Naval HQs to forward bases where damaged ships may come back to and keep your ARs handy to deal with the Japanese damage control issue. [8|]
CA Suzuya has slowed down from 8 to 5 knots and is 3 hexes away from Kendari (see measures taken in note above to help ensure her survival). Her damage has gone up to 85/44/10 from 77/32/23. She will take two days to get into port.

3178 casualties reported
Guns lost 75

[/center]Dead Computer
Hello All.
I was just talking with Michael and he wanted me to relay that his computer died a horrific death today and he is having order a new one, He'll probably be out of things (except when at work) for a week or so.
He also asked if anyone has Stewart's PM to let him know what has happened too.
Thanks!
John

RE: Dead Computer
I'm in the office this morning looking at a Dell Inspiron tower (I have a relatively new 22" LCD monitor). My current computer is about 8 years old and came out when Windows XP was new and not getting rave reviews. I think I can get a new one at Best Buy and then get Microsoft Home and Office (I need Word and Excel for work). I'm also using the excuse that I need a new one as the "mirage" called AE may actually be real. [:D]

Balikpapan
23 Jan 42 - A new computer was puchased on Thursday at Best Buy. My 8 year old computer will be used as a dead weight. I lost my Combat Report, so i have only one thing written down to report.
Balikpapan: It was captured without any damage to its economic assets!![:)] The base has minor damage - 27/12/17. I needed this good news.

ASW/Subs: I-156 has a busy day at Tjilitjap. First, AP Van Overstraten get 1 torpedo hits and then she surfaces. She uses her 4.7" guns to sink AK Empire Confidence, Shell hits 4, Torpedo hits 2. I-159 survives an ASW attack at Soerabaja.
Philippines: At Legaspi, 4 Ki-43-Ic Oscar have to deal with 14 B-17D Fortress (no damage done).
Training runs: At Naga, 7 Ki-43-Ic Oscar escort in 9 B5N Kate. No. 101 RAAF Base Force in New Ireland sees 8 A5M4 Claude, 4 A6M2-N Rufe, 16 A6M2 Zero, 31 G3M Nell, and 2 Ki-46-II Dinah.
New Guinea: Hollandia is captured by one of my roving SNLF (who is getting a lot of frequent flier miles [:D]).
Screenshot: Please note my 2 CAs that have just arrived and disbanded in Kendari from the Battle of Makassar. The port is at 4(2) 26% with 180 engineers. My one and only AR is 2 days away and the Naval HQ is about a week away as she is coming from Formosa on APs at full speed. For the JFB, will she survive??

Seige of Singapore

ASW/Subs: None!!
Borneo: Since "some" Japanese general/admiral forgot to ship in any Aviation Support with the invasion forces for Balikpapan, I have had to attack the base next to it and provide LRCAP over Balikpapan. At Samarinda, 25 A6M2 Zero escort 72 G3M Nell from Kuching getting only 13 hits on the base total. The second wave comes from Kendari as 29 A6M2 Zero escort in 59 G4M1 Betty, but get only 6 hits on the airbase. [:(]
Malaya: Singapore gets 60 Ki-43-Ic Oscar to escort 105 Ki-21 Sally and 1 Ki-15 Babs. They get 77 hits on the airbase total while 4 Sally are damaged by flak. The ground attack at Singapore finally reduces the fort level by 1. [&o]
Note: Recon of Batavia for the last few turns shows he has 31 fighters, 44 bombers, 43 auxillary along 24 ships in port. Plans are being formulated within the Japanese General staff and will be revealed in an upcoming post. An Aviation Rgt finally arrived at Moulmein and 2 daitai of Zeros have moved forward along with some level bombers.
Screenshot: An experiment with my new software. i hope it looks good.

I-156 Sunk by Naval Gunfire ONLY!!
26 Jan 42 Air losses are in ( )
ASW/Subs: I-156 has the misfortune of running into 4 British DDs operating 60 miles off of Batavia. She does not get a chance to launch a single torpedo as DD Electra puts 22 x 4.7" shell hits into her during the middle of the night.
She sinks as a result.
I'm watching the replay and hoping the shelling will stop and she has a chance to make it back to port.
Burma: At Moulmein, 22 A6M2 Zero are on CAP as some unescorted bombers (27 Blenheim IV) from Magwe come in.
10 are shot down for no losses and the airbase gets only 6 total hits. The 22 A6M2 Zero are still on patrol when the second raid from Mandalay - 14 Buffalo I (5), 19 Wellington III (1), and 3 Curtis H81-3A PR hits the airbase. The runway gets only 2 hits. Meanwhile, 60% of the 2 daitai of Zeros at the base escort their attack on Rangoon's base. 29 A6M2 Zero (1) protect 20 Ki-48 Lily (1) and 9 Ki-49 Helen from the 14 Hurricane IIb (4) on CAP. The airbase gets 4 hits and the runway gets 15 hits.
Malaya: Stuart decides to move in some fighters as CAP over Singapore and comes out ahead. 34 Ki-43-Ic Oscar (6) escort in 51 Ki-21 Sally (2) and 1 Ki-15 Babs vs 11 Hurricane IIb (none shot down!!). I get 7 airbase hits, 4 airbase supply hits, and 16 runway hits.
Philippines: At Naga, 8 Ki-43-Ic Oscar escort 9 B5N Kate and 18 Ki-48 Lily to inflict 2 airbase supply hits. At Manila, the Luzon Air Force comes in with 8 A6M2 Zero, 8 G3M Nell, 70 Ki-21 Sally (1), 24 Ki-49 Helen, and 6 Ki-15 Babs. The airbase get 20 hits total.
China: The Allied Chinese LBA are increasing their activity. The 35th Division at Kaifeng gets some visitors from Honan 13 I-153c and 7 SB-2c. Haipong gets her visitors from Nanning 22 I-153c and 11 SB-2c.
Java: At Djokjakarta, 18 A6M2 Zero (1) escort 22 G3M Nell (1) from Kuching run into 6 P-35A (2) providing CAP over 3 MSW in the harbor. Two of the MSW are sunk.
Borneo: At Balikpapan, my LRCAP of 7 A6M2 Zero and 2 Ki-43-Ic Oscar face 4 CW-21B Demon (2), 9 Brewster 339D (3), and 3 Beaufort V-IX. The Beauforts miss getting any hits on CL Kashii.
Notes/Plans: A few days ago I noticed that Bataan has only 2 LCUs (see screen shot below). As a result, from Lingayen, I am moving in an engineer rgt and 3 tank rgt (AV - 170). I also have 4 chutai of Topsy moving the Kure 1st SNLF from Legaspi to Lingayen. I think he has a static CD and a BF there. "IF" and this is a big "IF" I capture this base, I can sweep the mines and place Manila under attack by BB TF to quickly reduce her surplus of supplies.

RE: I-156 Sunk by Naval Gunfire ONLY!!
27 Jan 42
ASW/Subs: SS KXV misses my transports 120 miles due east of Balikpapan as they head back for Tarakan.
Burma: At Moulmein, 24 A6M2 Zero and 14 Ki-43-Ic Oscar are on CAP when the British come calling. The same squadron of 13 Blenheim IV (5) as yesterday are rudely welcomed. I'm glad to face all these British bombers over my base as my experience levels continue to improve.
Malaya: 21st Mixed Brigade is at Singapore when 5 Blenheim rise from the damaged AF, but don't inflict any damage. Meanwhile, Imperial Guards Division is attacked by 4 more Blenheim and do no damage. Weather prevented my own strike to hit Singapore's AF as I had exchanged a daitai of Oscars with Zeros from Bangkok last turn after my Oscars got beat up by Hurricanes. I had hoped he wouldn't notice the difference in numbers. Hopefully, he will see it next turn. After a day of rest, I launch another deliberate attack on Fortress Singapore - engineers reduce fortifications to 4. Japanese max assault: 1784 - adjusted assault: 617 & Allied max defense: 827 - adjusted defense: 1288
Philippines: Naga - 8 Ki-43-Ic Oscar provide escort for 9 B5N Kate and 17 Ki-48 Lily to hit the airbase. I get 6 hits total. They are coming from Legaspi which is only a level 3 AF. Manila - 8 A6M2 Zero fly high abve 8 G3M Nell (1), 71 Ki-21 Sally, 24 Ki-49 Helenand 6 Ki-15 Babs. I get 45 hits on the airbase.
Borneo: Balikpapan - I have my transports unloading most of an Aviation Rgt that I forgot to send with the invasion forces and my LRCAP of 12 A6M2 Zero from Tarakan come up against 3 CW-21B Demon (3), 6 Brewster 339D (2), and 3 Beaufort V-IX. His fighters do their job as 2 Beauforts get through and an AP gets 2 x 500lb bomb hits and will spend some time disbanded in port.
Java: Soerabaja - seems a few overly aggressive pilots bring in 4 A6M2 Zero escorting in 4 G3M Nell to attempt to hit the ASW TF operating off shore. They run into 11 Brewster 339D, 16P-40E Warhawk, and 6 P-40B Tomahawk as CAP. No planes are lost and DD Kortenaer avoids the 4 torpedoes launched at her.
China: Wenchow - I have two divisions take the base with a deliberate attack (8:1 odds). A BF, a Field Army, and guerilla unit are marched into captivity (10299 casualties).
Notes: I have been having a series of PM with Stuart about House Rules (HR) over the need for Chinese LCUs to spend Political Points (PP) to leave China. I had noticed a build up of 8 units in the base 120 miles east of Hanoi, so I wanted clarification.
Has anyone ever played a PBEM without the Chinese needing to pay PP to leave the country??

No and it is the main reason that we met and became friends when you took over my first PBEM when my former opponent thought he didn't need to ... Moving troops out of China should be PP'ed. So good things can come of such things [;)]Has anyone ever played a PBEM without the Chinese needing to pay PP to leave the country??
RE: I-156 Sunk by Naval Gunfire ONLY!!
I concur with Damian. Those troops MUST be bought out to be moved. Only seems fair to me. I've been thinking about it myself in the Fleet the Gods Forgot AAR.
