Keep in mind Chickenboy that Manila is light urban, not heavy urban, but I too plan to defend Manila and Clark Field. As for Malaria, according to the manual, bases reduce the effect of Malaria zones, so wouldn't mjk's strategy of defending Soerabaja be ok?

Mjk, how do you buy base forces? I couldn't find that in the manual.
Good points, Scotters1976.

I think that with the non-malarial bonus to recuperation plus the potential to generate supply offset the light versus heavy urban terrain.

The manual for WiTP also stated that larger bases reduced the effect of Malaria zones, but this did not carry over into the actual game.

I will be interested in seeing if there is a base size effect on malaria in AE versus what is stated in the manual. That may change some of my approach.

Sorry for any confusion. My language should have been more precise.

I paid the Political Point (PP) cost to change their HQ to a non-restricted HQ so they could be loaded onto ships. Most of the units under restricted command in the Phillipines and DEI can't be changed. However if the HQ (in the upper lefthand corner) that they are attached to is "yellow", and not white, then you can click on it and change it.

As an example, I moved the Lautem base force on Timor to Merauke at the cost of 4 PPs.

Yep, I was going off of how it actually worked in WitP. I'd love it if building up bases decreases the nasty effects of malaria.

When I wrote the opening post I had yet to examine the new map. Batavia takes the place of Soerabaja this time around. Although at the moment they're about 60/40 in the Assault Value department. Not sure if I'll put all my eggs in one basket. The new movement rules allow me to be more flexible and wait to see how things develop a bit more.

I noticed though in the PI you *can* re-assign the B-17's and move them out.

yeah. and then they withdraw anyway! Is it worth the PPs??

He's just reiterating the experience of playing Witp. I doubt anyone can find links to people complaining of this in Witp.
