RE: The little destroyer that couldn't
By January 22, Japan has take Manila, Rebaul, Lunga and Tulagi. I suspect my opponent is also preparing a major attack on Changsa. Can't wait to see how this plays out, he has lost a number of AKs and APs but my Allied cruiser fleet has been battered.
Loss of the Lexington early in the game has limited my options. Since we are playing Scenario 2, I can see the Japanese high water mark being better than historical. But then I did want a challenge.[:)]

RE: The little destroyer that couldn't
Post war inquiries into the Clark Field Fiasco would reveal that the supplies had not been destroyed as no Quartermaster thought they were useful. Most ammunition dated back to the Philippines Insurrection. Stockpiled uniforms were WWI issue and infested with moths. The majority of the rations consisted of canned Beijing Baked Beans supplied by M&M Enterprises. Mysteriously the inquiry also revealed that the warehouses that contained the cans of beans were insured with Lloyd's of London. The insurance also covered contents of said warehouses against fire, flood and acts of war. It is unsure who granted such a policy or who collected on it...

RE: The little destroyer that couldn't
---- January 26-27, 1942. DD Le Triomphant depth charges a submarine near Yasawa. An oil slick is sighted. This marks a successful cruise for the French ship, three transports sunk, two escorts crippled and now a submarine likely destroyed. All with only cosmetic damage to the ships funnel. Alas there is no champagne for the homeless crew to celebrate with.

---- January 27-30th, 1942. Submarine depth Charged near Pearl, oil slick spotted. Attu falls in the N Pacific, hope those troops like winter. In NG Aitape falls, Japan is consolidating it's hold in the south.
American docks are busy refitting four Bagley, four Gridley and two Benham class destroyers. These vessels should be good escorts for my CV fleets.
The Alarm is raised in the Java Sea as a large Imperial cruiser fleet is spotted headed their way.

The fall of Balikpapan
---- Jan 31 thru Feb 1st. The Japanese fleet headed towards the Java Sea detours to Balikpapan. There a landing force assaults the port capturing it on the first day. Following the loss of the port the defenders capitulate on the first of February. Large amounts of oil, fuel and supplies are just handed over to the Imperial aggressors. A black day indeed. Over Port Moresby Australian fighters continue to wear down Japanese fighters. Le Triomphant is resupplied with torpedoes and heads off for her second cruise. Several cradles will be filled following her shore leave.

RE: The fall of Balikpapan
---- Feb 3, 1942. South of Pearl the DD Schley plays a game of cat and mouse with a Japanese Submarine. Each pass the crew thinks they got a hit and each time the contact maneuvers away seemingly untouched.
Over PM the P-40s continue to rise up and challenge Zeros flying out of Rebaul. While there are not that many confirmed kills the damaged Japanese planes have a long flight home.

RE: The fall of Balikpapan
---- Feb 4, 1942. While refueling at Ambon the CL Java is jumped by Zeros, Kates and Vals. In minutes she is reduced to a burning wreck. Her escorts attempt to tow her but the damage is extensive. In Burma Toungoo falls with barely a fight. In northern China Nationalist troops liberate Paotow. In the Aleutians more Japanese vessels are sighted in the frigid waters.

RE: The fall of Balikpapan
---- Feb 5-6, 1942. SS I-1 plays hide and go seek with ASW task forces south of Pearl, neither side scoring any hits. A Japanese sub lurking just 30 miles outside Pearl scores a hit on a escort. The ship is broken in half and sinks with nearly her entire complement. The incident is not widely reported but morale in Hawaii still suffers from the brazen attack.
Near Ambon the Java sinks while struggling to make port. The entry of the KB into the Java Sea causes great concern in Soerabaja.
Near Formosa SS Stingray torpedoes TK Kyokuyo Maru. Amazingly the fish detonates setting the tanker alight.
At Bataan the PA and US Army continue to hold out despite brutal shelling.
