Hi 1Eye

Very Interesting AAR. I've been reading both sides avidly. It's always good to have one maveric game which takes a different route to the majority.

It occurs to me that you will be shipping a lot of fuel for very little of HI on Hokkaido, so the demand must be for refuelling convoys. Rather than spending the effort and fuel in order to transport...er...fuel around the place, why not just refuel the convoys only from Honshu?

mmmm - I'm not sure the loss is from refueling TFs... I think - and this is just a WAG - that all of the fuel expenditures for HI on Hokkaido are being taken from Sapporo. The losses shown thru Tracker are steady every-turn-losses of 4200 fuel and only @ Sapporo.

I'm building engines @ Sapporo but I don't think fuel was involved in factory increases. I really don't know why it's 4200 every turn as it looks like my fuel consumption from HI production should only be around 180/per turn.
TTFN,

Mike

A mouse-over of Palembang shows 35 enemy units. Singapore shows 10. Fionn has moved most of the troops from Singapore to Palembang...

In an earlier e-mail when I saw all of those AK/AP he said he was building Singapore up and noted that since the losses he'd experienced from my subs showed no troops it showed he was sending supplies. I guess because it came via email and we'd been having some pretty candid discussions of the map and game that I just bought into his - uhm - yarn. He was even offering me suggestions - lol. I just assumed he was telling me the truth.

That rubs me the wrong way but - ok - I won't fall for any of his BS from here on out. I'm sure he doesn't see anything wrong with that and maybe most people don't. It's not something I've experienced with other players like Michael and Carl tho. Enough said - I'll find a way to show my appreciation.

Dont let it bother you.......Nemo will give valid advice to you during a game, but you always have to take some of his things with a pinch of salt. He will not steer you into bad moves so he can take advantage of it......ie "you should use your fighters at 100' to maximise damage" when he has 200 CAP waiting to slaughter you. But he will say "just re-inforcing the base" when he is actually removing etc. All pys warfare. Candid discussions only go so far with any opponent.

Discussions about percieved flaws in game are very candid and open. But always remember you are playing and talking to a shrink. Who plays mind games for a living......LOL

I should get some naval air support over there in a few turns to see if I can catch any merchies. Fionn said he'd landed only a small initial force so my WAG is he has a TF that'll make a quick stop to try and drop off troops/supplies to hold Marcus and build it up a tad.

I've noticed over quite a few turns you persist in flying sweep missions over bases which have no CAP.

I presume these operations are costing you some operational losses. More pertinently, as you clearly have air superiority over these bases, I wonder why you persist in these missions which seem to bring no profit to Japan and only some cost (operational losses, pilot fatigue and consumption of supplies).

Would it not be better to, once you have air superiority (say established after 2 or 3 unopposed sweeps) to either use those fighters to escort bombers (on the off chance that an occasional Allied air ambush using LRCAP is tried), or in the absence of available bombers use the fighters to drop bombs/used elsewhere? For example, in your last night bombing raid on Palembang, you encountered Buffaloes on CAP. You can't escort bombers on night missions, but you can IIRC, sweep at night. Once you have airfields in range of Palembang, an occasional night sweep might be quite beneficial.

Hi Alfred,

I'm experiementing with Training vs flying missions over enemy bases with fighters to see if I can gauge any advantage to flying missions VS setting a unit to train sweep missions.

I've been doing a lot of testing - this is what this particular game is s'posed to be about <grin>.

I've tested the sub warfare for Japan and how shallow/deep water affects ASW combat. I'm testing leaders and using patrol routes and the mini subs to see if there is anything I can do to increase effectiveness.

I've tested fighter ops with sweep and cap missions. I've examined the differences in altitude settings and have been actively testing to examin the difference in losses between normal and extended range combat. Setting altitude the same between FGs is rumored to have an affect on having two figher groups sweep an enemy base at the same time but so far I've had little luck with that.

Leader settings - specifically agression - have been rumored to affect which of two fighter groups sweeps first. I've tried @ Singapore to get my zeroes to sweep first instead of the Oscars by setting a more agressive leader for the Zero fighter group. So far I've seen no success by changing leaders in determining which FG sweeps an enemy base first when you have multiple FGs @ the same home base.

I've tested night bombing and am looking at altitude settings and how they affect night bombing. The accuracy for night bombing is really low - I'm checking to see if training increases the accuracy. I had tried to get my fighters to escort my night raids in the PI but nothing happened. In truth, I've been suprised to see the Buffalo work Night Ops as CAP over Palembang. Since I couldn't get my zeroes to escort in night missions over Clark/Manila I'd thought that I was limited to specially designed night fighters (like the A6M5d-S Zero, which Japan won't see for quite some time) for night missions with fighters. Now I'm trying to get zeroes out of Singkawang to escort bomber groups to Palembang. So far, no luck but it's only been 2 turns.

Where did you see in the manual that fighters can sweep @ night but not escort?

I'm learning the economy and production process for Japan - which is a real headache for me. In truth, I think I'd already be in trouble with supplies & fuel @ bases if we hadn't agreed to use scenario 2.

I'm testing armor and rails. There is real potential to drive fast moving armor up along rail lines and take out lightly defended bases so you can strategically move your large divisions, engineers, and artillery units quickly to address your objectives. And LB support looks like it will be very complementary with an armored tip, providing heavy disruption to defenders that the armored units should be able to take advantage of.

I've been testing the effect of mass DB/TB attacks on ground units and playing with altitudes to see if there is a difference in enemy units actually destroyed vs disrupted.

I had moved a bunch of arty units to Malaya. I was planning on testing artillery vs forts/ground units in a siege war similiar to some of the battles taken place in other games and discussed in AARs and threads. It's a major reason why I pulled KB from the area around Singapore and moved it to the PI. Maybe I can get my arty to Palembang and see how it works against forts/LCU in Sumatra...

1EyedJacks,

On pages 158-159 of the manual, there are two tables which list which type of operations are available to each type of aircraft, depending on whether they are used on day or night missions.

The manual is silent on whether a dedicated night fighter is more effective at night operations than a dedicated day fighter which is shifted to night operations. However the dedicated night fighter can undertake a few more missions at night than can a dedicated day fighter. For example, a dedicated night fighter can undertake at night naval attack or city attack, both missions not being available to a dedicated day fighter shifted to night operations.

Thanks Alfred.

Sorry I haven't been updating regularly - work has been unreal so far this month <grin>.

So the thumb nail version is Fionn seems to have withdrawn his carriers after trying unsuccessfully to bag my mini-kb. His carrier DB were pretty pathetic - I'm guessing due to poor training levels but that is a WAG. 1 Japanese BB took a torpedo but the damage is light and it's off to Japan for repairs.

Fionn also attacked and invaded a few of the Kurile Islands. It has been kinda funny to watch because while he did get his units there, they have been either so disrupted or too small to attack - rofl. No shock attacks on the 1st day of landing were made by the allied troops. He's got a few BB in the area which are the rightull prey of carriers. <grin> We are on day 3 and only one of his landings has actually been able to make an attack. My WAG is that Fionn's days of trying to slip in a few squads to take undefended bases have come and gone <bigger grin>.

I've been doing a lot of expeimenting with pushing and pulling supplies to my bases and think I've got this part figured out. Now trying to figure out which bases on this bloody board need resources/fuel/supplies and which ones I need to remove resources/fuel/supplies from - that's a bigger challenge.

Things are proceeding nicely in the PI. I'm building up the Marshal Isles. I'm pushing to Singapore and prepping air and air support units to be deployed as soon as Singapore falls. I'm already deep into my planning for Palembang and am moving troops for an assault in Sumatra.

In China I've got Fionn in a rough terrain hex about 150 miles east of Sian with lotsa INF and HQ. I brought arty LCU to the fight and am pounding him with LB. The LB are disrupting his LCU and my arty are turning his LCU into hamburger. I hope to drive him back to a base where I'll be able to see how the difference in hex types affects my arty attacks.

I've been thinking about trying to screw with Fionn's mind and thank him via email for the extra 1500AV of troops I've received in Japan as a result of his invasions in the Kuriles (no - I haven't received anything - lol) but I just can't go there. It would be funny if he bit to give him a taste of his own medicine. It's just not my thing tho.

And that's about all I can fit on this thumb nail - lol.

Fionn is talking about making some changes to the units on both sides of the table. He's still looking into what he can/cannot manipulate while in a game but for me it'd be cool to see anything that drives towards the goal of an EA version of AE. Any toys would be cool to see but if he can take off the restrictions on all units on both sides of the table plus increase the accumulation of Political Points, I think that would be a good start (at least in my opinion).

I turned off the bomber air strikes in China to see the effect of arty by itself. I've been softening up his 83k+ troops that are in a shared hex east of Sian with LB and then hitting them with arty. I want to see the effects w/o air support.

Troops in the PI are very near to driving into Manila where Fionn has forted up. Once I'm in position I'll drive my forces into Manila and with the cover of lotsa air support we'll see what a few rounds of siege warfare look like.

I'm finally in Singapore and will have that shortly. Lotsa supplies, fuel, and amphibious TFs moving to Malaya.

500 AV of troops set for a deliberate attack - LB out of Kuantan set for G. Atk, Escorts in case Fionn tries to disrupt my LB...

KB off to Takao for refuel/refit. I probed enough a few turns back to see I don't want to hit Palembang. I think I'm gunna come in behind and work my way up. Palembang is too shallow for me to use large ships to suppress his base and he has lotsa aircraft in the area between Pelembang/Oosthhaven/Batavai. I took some tough losses with a few squadrons from KB. And I'm pretty sure all the LCU that was at Singapore is now @ Palembang...

I'm thinking about Soerabaja and work my way back up. Java has an excellent rail system and that'll take me up to Batavia. With the air support I have in the area I should be able to gain air superiority and shut down any shipping from Soerabaja north to Palembang. If I do this I think Fionn would have to split his forces to cover both Palembang @ Oosthaven. And Oosthavan will lemme use bigger ships for bombardment if I come to shore there.

In Manila I caught ships in the harbour. Nemo must be trying to do another evac. Not this time. I sank a few ships in the harbour last turn with DB and I've lotsa Betty/Nell in Formosa. In truth, I kinda thought he'd try this again. I'd let the area go quite for about two weeks and then took Tarakan. Sub patrols were also sent and are now in the area. And now I've got air units @ Tarakan to CAP and go after enemy shipping. It's nice to pay him back for lieing to me earlier around Singapore. Misdirection I'm good with. Talking shit I'm good with. A bold-faced - naw - I'm not pulling my units outta Singapore - that pissed me off.

Troops are also in Bataan and very close to being in Manila. I've lotsa Sally/Lilly now in Legaspi/Aparri/Vigan. They'll be hitting Manilla as my troops move in. KB, after it hits Takao to replenish, will make another swipe or two @ Manila if needed and then KB is off to support my operations in the DEI.

Fionn landed on 4 of the Kurile Isles but in very small force. I've finally got my Para units to Kushiro and will take back two of those isles in rapid fashion. I'll have a couple of amphib units take out the other two. There goes more of my PP. PP are really hamstringing most of my options for rapid deployment of troops. Thank god I can move the Kwantang troops to China w/o PP or I'da been screwed.

In the Marshalls I've got mini KB in the area and have moved quite a few fighters into the area. LB are on the way too but I've been really concentrating them in China/Malaya-Borneo/PI - not a lot left to send into the Pacific. That'll change as soon as the PI falls.

Basically I'm gunna strap on a 3-headed monster - China/DEI/Pacific. I wanna strong defensive ring in the Pacific, drive into and take the DEI, drive through China and maybe into India depending on troop strength, and then set up a rapid deploy force of strength that I can use in some soft spot when I think I've got Fionn fully engaged. What I'm not sure about is garrison requirements in China but I think - as long as I don't bring Russia into the fray - I'll have more then enough LCU to take China. The advantage of going for Inda is that I won't havta spend PP - lol.

Lotsa air losses are gunna happen - but I'm really trying to keep latest/greatest fighters in high production so I can replace out all of those Claudes and Nates. I'm concentrating on Sally/Betty production for my LB.

Ship-wise I'm pushing DD/SUB/TK/AO/AK/AP.

Political points are pretty much spent moving LCU & Air units to SAA HQ.

Hey - I've been playing with the Autoconvoy system and it isn't half-bad. I've been told that I'll be able to use PB with that system when we patchup. I'm still waiting on Support to help me with licensing problems but I'm actually looking forward to the patch. The patch will pull more teeth from arty - which I'm kinda opposed to - but there are some other advantages for Japan. I'm really learning a lot about the game and units - testing and trying things out. My weak spot is production and the economy - but I'm learning here too. Thank god for Tracker - that really helps to figure out where supplies\fuel\resources need to go. Auto-convoy seems to fill in the cracks quite nicely.

Did you receive the Japanese invasion reinforcements (depot divisions arriving at some big cities in Japan) as a result of him taking bases in the Kuriles? Have forgotten what exactly triggers them but could be that invading the Kuriles does.

Hi Kereguelen,

I did not notice any additional Reinforcements. Since the language is pretty specific to Japan I'm assuming they mean the homeland of Japan proper.

Yes, should be Japan proper. But Canoerebel claimed in his AAR that his opponent received reinforcements when he invaded the Kuriles.

In the Marshalls:
- A pair of subs are off to Osaka for repairs.
- I’m still in the process of building up fort/airfield/port levels.
- Currently I can’t load torpedoes on my subs… I’m assuming on account of my AS having no supplies. I’m loading up my AS with supplies from port to see if that takes care of the problem.
- I moved some Mavis to Maloep and changed the search arc to 90-190 degrees.
- I’ve sent pickets back to Kwajalein to refuel
- I’ve got a few TF unloading fuel/supplies @ Kwajalein
- Another 36 zeroes are now @ Kwajalein

I’ve bumped up production of Ha-35 and Ha-32 engines. I’ll be ok with the Ha-35s and fighter production but my Betties will be bottlenecked for a while until I get more Ha-32 factories on-line.

Infantry finally marched into Bataan so I’m attacking there this turn.

In Manila I have 3ARM/3ART/2ENG/6INF for 1263AV. They are bombarding this turn.

@ Cabanatuan I’ve got 4ART/2ENG/1HQ/1INF for 95AV moving to Manila. Results of Arty in China looked really-really bad with the patch. I think I might need to beef this up… Fortunately Singapore fell but this could slow me down a little. I based force deployments on the strength of my arty. Patch 3 looks like I’ll have to revisit my troop levels.

I’ve got almost 300 LB in Manila so maybe that’ll help.

NOTE: I was seeing much heavier losses to Fionn's troops prior to the patch. I'll continue to monitor but right now arty looks hosed...

Near Formosa I have a pair of sub sightings and am sending ASW TFs over for a splash.

KB will make Takao next turn and I’ll get my air units back up to strength.

The 2nd Para unit will be dropping @ Shimushiri-Jima next turn. Interesting that @ Ketoi-Jima when my 1st para unit landed his troops there died w/o engagement. Fionn said he had pulled supplies out as the isle was undefendable. Probably another story. I would have really been interested to know if his unit really had no supplies and just died or if my landing there had something to do with that. In WiTP fragments seemed to live forever – which is why I’m curious…

Allied Unit(s) Wiped Out at Ketoi-jima by attrition!!!!!!

I’m sending an INF and ENG unit from Tokyo to hit Shimushira-Jima.

Some of my air units have heavy operations losses. Default of air units is Extended Range. I’m wondering if they are actually flying @ extended range when training or on Commander’s choice of target… This would explain the losses… According to the manual I will see heavier Op losses and double the support costs for extended missions. Anyway – I’m standing down a few units to build them back up and have reduced range on all aircraft to normal range. I’ll monitor losses and see what happens.

I’m moving all remaining ART/ENG/ARM/AA out of Manchukuo. And some INF & HQ. I’m gunna draw down from 11016 to something close to the 8000 minimum limit and move it all to the upper thrust I’ve got going in China. I need to push somewhere and this will be a strong effort on my part. I want to keep the same LCU with the same support structure to see if I can notice any increase in efficiency through maintaining a valid command structure.

I’m moving the 9th Base Force by air to Tarakan for air support from Camranh Bay.

Troops @ Tarakan are marching next door to Tandjoengelor to give it a bash.

The 2nd Fleet HQ @ Sama is off to Singapore

Railways are pretty cool. I’m sending troops from Indochina to Singapore by rail – too cool! lol

2.2.42
Port Size is killing me. I need to really build up ports to increase my loading/unloading speed with TFs. @ Kwajalein it’s taking 4ever to unload fuel as I can’t dock my Cargo TFs.

Some of my CV air units are literally so shot up that I can’t just refill my air groups from Takao like I would have in WiTP. I disbanded my CVs into Takao to get the size of my units to go back up to a size of 24 or 27. The size had dropped to 18 on most of my air groups while just docked. I don’t understand why I have to disband them to get the group size to go back to default. Anyway – the next surprise was that I couldn’t just keep adding aircraft until the units were filled to size. I am limited in adding aircraft to about 6-9 per air group. And then I get a message saying there’s a 3 day delay for some of the air groups the next day. This really slows things down. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a better way to refill my air groups to capacity? Would things speed up if I move my air groups to the airfield to rebuild them?

Well - still 2.2.42 but I'm making some major changes in troop deployments.

I had been depending on arty and air support to assist with about 1500 AV in the PI. With Arty now in the toilet I'm deverting additional troops to the PI to try and nock out Manila quickly. My plan had been to take out Fionn's troops @ Manila and then use those troops to push through Makassar Strait to take out the south end of Borneo, drive another pressure point in the DEI for Fionn to defend, and bounce some of my smaller units into the pacific to bolster the island defences and create a buffer ring. W/O arty I figure I need about 3000AV, plenty of supplies, and some good air support to really disrupt his forces and take Manila quickly.

Over by Palembang I'm gunna quickly move my air arm into Singapore, create a fighter base @ Singkawang, and prep units for an invasion. I'm still not sure where to hit but you can bet your sweet arse it's not gunna be Palembang - lol. Lotsa-lotsa AV getting ready. KB plus about 200 Zeroes/Oscars ought to be enough to CAP/LRCAP/Sweep with. I dunno how many aircraft he has here but it looks like lots. And since he doesn't have many to begin with that means he's gotta be light almost everywhere else.

I've got supply air units dropping supplies for my troops that were run out of Moulmien. Fionn has a lot of troops there so my concern is a push down into Malaya/Thailand. If he tries this I'm pretty sure my troops will be able to perform a delaying action - but they'll get tore up something fierce.

In upper China I've goty lots arty coming in. I'm gunna see if the more-is-better option works. If nothing else it should occupy Fionn while infantry units from Kwantang arrive.

In the Pacific I'm sending additional troops and supplies to the area but truth be told - I really don't have the LCU to defend islands if Fionn makes a push. I'm pretty sure he will - I'm just not sure if he'll go for the Marshalls or maybe try to hit the Kurile Islands in force? I'm mining the heck out of the Kurile Islands and have troops moving in to push his little pint-sized units out.

Not much else to say... Sub Ops will pick up shortly as I concentrate patrols in the DEI and around Oz. There was some lite surface action near Singkawang where Fionn sent in a CA led TF to disrupt my TFs that are unloading supplies/troops. It musta been a suprise to see a pair of BB waiting for him - lol. I'd pulled my BB and CA from KB and left them guarding Singkawang while KB made a resupply run. It was pretty much a draw from my viewpoint. One of my BB took a torpedo but the damage is really lite. In return I raked over a CA and DD pretty good. So all ships will spend some time in a body/fender shop and I expect my BB will be out in short order.

Well, Fionn's CVs showed up S of Kusaie Isle and thrashed an ASW TF today. It makes me wonder why he's west of the Marshall Isles... Going for Truk? Or maybe just a smash-n-run? Or is this more mis-direction? What a tricky chap my opponent is...

Other than his carrier strike of my ASW unit things are pretty quite on his part this turn. I'm as defended as I'm gunna get @ Truk and Kwajalein. I'll modify my search patterns in the Marshalls to see if he is "showing" me his CVs while an invasion force hits the Marshalls from the east but the truth is, w/o intel it's probably just as good to sit tight.

I've got quite a few TFs floating about in my back waters with troops/supplies/fuel that I'll devert until I have better intel.

My KB is still in Takao loading up aircraft so it's way out of position to do anything in the pacific.

I do have an augumented mini-KB in port @ Kwajalein. I'll pull it out so I don't lose it in a port attack and seek targets of opportunity. I'm kinda thinking about making a run straight west to try and tap his CV force. It looks like he did not split his CV force as one of his strikes @ Kusaie had 54 DB... So far he attacked only with DB so he's hording his torpedoes...

I have this other opportunity that would be really-really fun to do... It would at least mess with his head I think...

I managed to take out a few xAK/TK near Balikpapan this turn - and there is a whole series of TFs and LCU that I'm in the process of setting up to change my force levels in China and the PI.

Post by 1EyedJacks »

Well last turn was pretty quite in spite of Fionn tagging my ASW TF @ Kusaie Isle. I put all of my Mavis' & Bettys on Naval Search while CAPing Roi-Namur heavily.

I got this e-mail from Fionn saying

--- Snip ----

Kusaie? Really, I think your recon pilots need their eyesight checked.
I only see a couple of TFs, big ones but only a couple of them ;-)

Interesting though that you don't seem to have seen the guys coming in
from the north or east... Did you have ANY recon at all operating out
of the Marshalls?

--- Snip ---

I guess his lead TF is designed to suck any attack I send from Roi-Namur. And his CVs are at the tail-end of the string of TFs.

I-122 is moving to Eniwetok along with RO-61.

With that many ships in his TFs any attack I can send from my bases or mini-KB will be dispersed over a butt-load of ships. My chances of tapping his CVs will be poor indeed. But it appears he's not after Truk. In truth I thought he might be headed there @ first since he popped up on my radar so far east of the Marshalls.

I'm trying to get my BBs and CAs over from Truk. I'll try to suck his CVs away with a BB/CA sighting and then strike @ his invasion TFs with my Mini-KB. He must be going after Kwajalein/Roi-Namur - right?

That's one mighty big invasion force. He must have been planning this for a while. I feel flattered.
