Why didn't you just maneuver to isolate him up north instead of trying to attack that infantry stack? Did you run out of movement points?

I didn't use my panzer to attack his cav and rifle unit.  I only do that when I absolutely have to.  I used a combination of infantry rotaing out do try and displace him.  The panzers ran out of movement, execpt the SS division but I didn't want to give him a easy out for some units.  The ZOC penalties and traffic should keep him in place for me to finish the job next turn.

I use MS paint for the screen shot, then use JASC paint shop pro for all the rest. I'm sure I could do a lot more with PSP but it so complicated for some stuff.

I browsed the internet for paper and came up with a lot of diffenet types. As far as the font go to http://www.dafont.com/ and download what ever meets your fancy then go to your windows files and drop in the font file in the folder labled "FONTS". You might need to adjust your folder options to 'see all protected files' to find the font folder.

Operation Barbarossa is officially closed

I'm starting localized operations due to the changing situation on the front. I'll come up with some new operational plans here when time permits me to.

Novograd Front

Post by CarnageINC »

This is an area I recently have over extended my panzer corps to have them isolated a turn. If you look at the map you will see there is infantry east and west of my axis of travel and I know he'll cut me off. It will slow me down at a critical moment! I must be more cautious of these errors.

I do believe the only major concentration of forces in the area are around Novograd and Leningrad itself. I'm thinking of by passing Novograd to try and isolate the forces there if he will let me. I'm not going to grind my panzer's against units dug in swamp area's. I would like to get them to better maneuvering ground to the east but we see about that in a few weeks.

Im also concerned about the heavy line to the east of my axis of advancement. He has a lot of units to contain but I'll have fewer and fewer units to contain him with.

Smolensk Front

Post by CarnageINC »

Here is a major breakthrough in this front! I have Smolensk and it was free for the taking! I think Red is not taking my panzer's seriously enough to not have more coverage to their front. He is determined to keep heavy forces on the Dnepr river which invites some encirclement if he's not cautious. But I think he'll leave enough to make it an easy crossing and pull back the rest.

Kiev Front

Post by CarnageINC »

This is another area of me making an over extentment of my panzer's. No real damage done but it did limit most of them to smaller movements. I'm currently resting them and refueling one panzer corps for operation to the south. Kiev will have to be taken by infantry alone.

How does he not have an entire reserve army digging in Smolensk...?

Sheesh. You don't just put everything on the landbridge and call it a day.

I'm noticing a tendency among many Soviet players to overcommit on Southwestern Front. Yet there comes a point where piling stuff up behind the Dnepr down there stops making sense, since these forces cannot do anything of an offensive nature behind the river, and packing the bulge around Kiev offers hostages to fortune.

I like piling it on in the center by Smolensk and fighting hard there. The terrain is just good enough to slow the German down without becoming impossible for the Soviet to counterattack.

Odessa Front

Post by CarnageINC »

No real changes here. I plan on using some German infantry to take Odessa. He garrisoned them with Airborne Inf., those are tough bastards to dig out from my experience. I hope he's not to dug in with major unit in the Crimean peninsula. I expect him to pull back to the next line of defense soon. If not my panzer's will force him to!

His mistake is my gain. I think we both have made our mistakes, his are costing him in men, mine in time. Given time I'm sure many Soviet players will find a balance. I think the Axis players will have some hard lessons to learn and a very steep learning curve to make any ground.

The only comment I would make on your opening moves is I like to kill all the soviet fort units during the initial turn because it saves reducing the pockets on turn 2.

Why do you kill all forts on turn 1? Wouldn't you rather attack the troops in forts after they are weaker and more likely to be pushed out on turn 2?

Just curious. Thanks.

I think the tendency to pile troops in the Southwest is because that's where the bulk of the original units are ( Soviet ).  There's also that fear of losing the river and a panzer rush in the southeast.

The opponent would disband the forts on his turn with all the parts going to the replacement pool. It would be a costly mistake.

Carnage it's your goodluck that he's used the airborne to defend Odessa.

IIRC when destroyed they don't come back.

Randallw, as Southwest Front falls back towards Dnepr, you should spread those forces out and help take some of the load off Western Front especially. SW Front can take over large parts of the Dnepr all the way up to Gomel or so, allowing Western Front to shift northwards.

Accumulating the lot in and around the Kiev bulge is generally a bad idea.

all the forts he's talking about are don't have combat units in them. Easy kills that you don't have to make next turn. I missed one and he caught it [:-] [:D]

Several reasons to kill forts on the first turn. It takes less movement to kill them under the surprise rule, so that means you can get more done. When attacked, they are all going to surrender anyway. You can also free other units that have not moved yet from their zone of control, depending on where you want to move those units. You also reduce the pocket size because you "take over" the hex when you win the combat.
