I had to reduce this one slightly to get it to upload

Next will be an arc from the Warfield tower.

From Warfield Ridge Observation Tower
Looking at this pic again, I am not confident of my ID of the Seminary building. I'm going to have to study this some more. However I'm pretty sure the monument in the distance center left is the Eternal Light Peace Monument.

see edit below the photo
Image

edit: Yes that is the seminary. In this pick it looks like there's a great big brick tower on a wide base of a building. In fact the "tower" is the entire seminary building seen lengthwise and the "base" is just the rooves of surrounding buildings.

Looks like you had a good visit. I think one of the best things about living in the DC area is the close proximity of many CW battlefields. Sharpsburg is my personal favorite. I like to fish for smallmouth bass just below Burnside's bridge.

That was a really neat way to do it. Thanks for the "then and now" perspective. Wish I had thought of that on my trips to Antietam and Gettysburg ( I live in Md). Again, three cheers!

The following two shots are from a position 100 feet north of the Warfield Ridge Ob. Tower. This was the position of Alexander's battery prior to G. Hood advancing on the round tops.

My notes on the next shot are that it is "a view from Alexander's battery", it is clearly to the NE

This sat view will show "a" the position of the last two shots, "b" the approximate location of the next shot, and "c" the position of Latham's battery.

Before I get to the next shot, there is some confusion here, as well as with the next shot. The next shot is marked as being at (the intersection of) Plum Run and Confederate Ave. This is completely impossible, as the only place those intersect is immediately SW of Round Top. My notes also say that prior to that pic a march was conducted from W Confederate Ave to Plum Run that began at 12:40 pm and concluded at 12:50 pm. I can recall doing this just to see how long it would take for Hood's troops to cover that distance. I do not recall whether one of us (my friend or I) did the march while the other brought the car around to pick him up at the destination (I doubt this scenario) or if one or more likely both of us marched, timed it and then marched right back (most likely in my mind). Further confusion comes from which Plum Run was being referred to. The main branch originates somewhere to the NE of Devil's Den near the Little Round Top heading south then crosses west south of DD and then heads south again. A branch of it originates to the NW of DD and heads south joining the main line. I believe this branch is what was marched to. Anyways here's a view from the sky of the area.

Here's the pic claiming to be from Confed. Ave by Plum Run.

Now, here is the position of Latham's battery of Henry's battalion 300 feet south of the intersection of Confederate Ave and the Emmitsburg Pike.

Sorry about the stains in the upper right, don't know where they came from. They are not UFO's.

The next four pics are from the same location and represent "Hood's jump off point". For some reason I didn't take down compass bearings here but it doesn't seem necessary.

The next pic is noted as being from Hood's right flank looking to the round tops. Somewhere south of the last pic.
