Movement phase now and a German corps heads for Gdynia to overrun the Polish naval units. There is a roll for each to decide their fate:

The Destroyer Flotilla is destroyed
The Convoy Point successfully flees to Harwich.

There is no point in requesting HQ Support or additional air support as these are pretty straight forward attacks:

1. The first north of Warsaw is automatic
2. Likewise the second against the unit in Krakow
3. The attack against Poznan is 7:1. The Poles choose the Assault table to try and inflict some damage on the enemy. The Germans roll a 3 (4 with the +1 modifier). Although the Polish unit is destroyed, the Germans are at least disorganised.
4. The Germans can choose the Blitzkrieg for this one so the 7:1 should be straightforward - and it is (despite another 3 being thrown).

The Germans use HQ Reorganisation to bring most of their disorganised units "face-up".

In other news, the Japanese land an HQ, an Infantry and an anti-tank unit in China.

The Italians do not move any units.

The Impulse moves on by one (sometimes the Impulse can move on by more - more of this later) and its now the Allied impulse.

The Commonwealth and France declare war on Germany (as per the rules) and there is a US Entry throw (only one throw). The Allies have a bit of luck there. The throw is 10. Had it been 9 or less (-9 is the cost of CW/France declaration) then a chit would had to have been removed from the Ge/It pool. The high throw means that this does not happen.

The German reserves are called out. These are placed in German cities and are disorganised. Most are placed on the Western Front as there are sufficient units in the east to finish off Poland.

For the Germans I can scrap all three weak fighters + the 2-range sub. I decide not to scrap any Land units.

Image
The 5-4 Mot deserves to be scrapped in my humble opinion but I am sure that many do not agree with me on this.

Scrapping motorized units is less common when playing with the 2d10 land combat table but since this is with the 1d10 table then I think it should be scrapped.

But I must confess that I do not always scrap it.[8|]

With careful calculation of the attack strength I suspect that all these attacks could have been automatic.

I agree - stupidly forgot that the forest hex was a city called Poznan and so the Assault table would apply [8|]. Even so - the Germans throwing two 3's didn't help [&:]

The USA and USSR have to take combined's (as neutrals).
Although I am concerned about the convoy routing I will play as though this works and therefore the CW will need to defend their routes accordingly. As a result I take a naval with the CW.
The French do a combined as they need to get their units in Syria and Algeria to France.
China do a land.

I liked michaelbaldur's thinking in the "Breakthrough In France" thread. He suggests that faster moving French units be put in the Maginot Line in order to allow for their speedy retreat when Paris is threatened. Never thought of that before - but have reflected this in my French set-up.
The down side with this is that if you place the garrisons in the Alps then they will be disorganized if you need to move the units.

The RAF and the Armee de l'air, taking advantage of surprise, try a bit of Strategic Bombing. They were both spectacularly unsuccessful...

The rest of the turn consists of US units debarking in Hawaii, the French Infantry from Syria landing in France and the BEF loaded aboard TRS and sitting in the North Sea waiting to land.

I simply have to ask. What is the current location and disposition of one HMS Warspite? [;)]

A very good question Mr Rearguard. She is currently with the Home Fleet, the Flagship of Admiral Charles Forbes, and based at Scapa Flow. Rest assured if Admiral Marschall attempts to poke his nose into the Atlantic, The Grand Old Lady will make sure he wished he hadn't.

When the Home Fleet is based in Scapa Flow you should always guard against two things that could be embarrassing.

1) Germany makes a fast invasion and thereby overrunning the entire Home Fleet. And if some of the ships are disorganized this can be truly devastating.
2) Germany puts the base out of supply. This is usually not that bad since it is often easy to put the base back in supply but this could still be annoying at the wrong moment.

The game advances one impulse and moves on to Impulse 3. The weather roll is an 8 - which means the weather takes a turn for the worse. There is rain in both the North Temperate Zone (Poland and the part of China where Japan has massed its forces).

It also means that the Impulse Advance will be 2 not 1 next time around.

Italy remains neutral and so choose a combined Action (their only choice)
Both Japan and Germany choose a Land Action

Sept/Oct 1939
Impulse: 3

The impulses moves briskly through the various phases without any action being taken until we come to Ground Strike. The German checks the remaining Polish units to confirm that they are both already disorganised - they are - so Ground Strike is not required. This is good as the German will have more air rebases at the end of the impulse.

The Japanese occupy Chenchow in the north of China and this means a throw on the US Entry chart. Its a 1. In Central China Yammamoto and his army group march toward Wuhan.

I must have missed this. Why did the Japanese set up their units so far from Wuhan and Nanchang? [&:]
