Lest we forget...here is the end of Warspite.
Better to have gone down surrounded by enemies, with all guns blazing.

Not for the crew.

On the other hand the reason for 1786 clicks and counting could be all those people are searching for hints on "how to make their life complete" as well. Something like the metaphysical safe haven of the WitP AE forums.

Indeed so. I recall the words of Admiral Fraser, aboard HMS Duke of York. As he stood on the bridge watching the blazing Scharnhorst sink beneath the icy waves, he turned to his no.1 and said "Oh damn bad luck, what? I wish that was us. Knowing our cursed misfortune, Duke of York will be scrapped at the end of the war"....

Similarly Rear Admiral Lee felt much the same way as he watched the burning hulk that was once the battleship Kirishima fighting her losing battle for survival. He turned to his XO and lamented "S***! Nimitz will have me court-martialled for this! If only I had allowed Washington to be pummelled into oblivion... but oh no, I had to go and win the battle...what a schmuck..."

I can't fault your logic once again Zorch - oh, except for one tiny detail.... its total sloblocks [;)]

No I don't like it - its very sad [:(]

Having said that, her refusal to go to the breakers - and to stubbornly make her own end, is all part of her wonderful story [&o]

Why didn't we keep her? Well its very simple - after two world wars, the UK was absolutely stoney broke. There was no money for proper forces let alone museum ships. It was a real shame, but…….

This is very much in line to what are commonly assumed to be the last words of RADM Shinoda, the skipper of Yamashiro, who, when finally the old battleship was hit by those last 2 torpedoes launched by Newcomb, turned to his XO Cpt. Ozaki Toshiharu and said: "Now I feel better. I already feared our great ship would escape and return home to rust in Tokyo Bay with the other remains of Combined Fleet due to fuel shortages. Disgrace has been averted."

On a similar note, rumor has it that Cpt. Edward Howe Watson, overlooking the row of upturned destroyer hulls at Honda Point, mumbled to himself: "At least we did not have to sell them for scrap metal..."

The Honda Point disaster in 1923. A number of US destroyers were lost after running aground in bad weather.

So, after 70+ posts and over 2,000 hits, where have we got to?

Well I think it's clear we have reached two conclusions upon which we can all agree:

1. HMS Warspite is THE greatest, the most beautiful, the toughest and the most ballsy of any warship, of any type, in any navy, EVER. FACT.

2. WITP-AE is, on the surface, a complex and realistic computer game. However, scratch the surface and it is apparent that the game is no more realistic a depiction of the Pacific War than Ker-plunk.... The game designers have embarrassed themselves with a most basic error that renders the game totally unplayable.

Just to let you know, I have sent my bin by UPS to Zorch. Could the next person please post their name and address here so that Zorch can forward the bin to them?

OK. Zorch, send it my way when you're done. I'm at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington D.C. Address it to "Chickenboy in Charge" or "CIC" for short. It'll get to where it needs to be.

BB Warspite, Torpedo hits 4, on fire, heavy damage, but just like at Jutland, off Crete, at Salerno and in the English Channel, the old girl took the punishment like the old trooper she is - her fire control parties fought the fires, brought them under control and quickly restored her to fighting effectiveness.
