There were several photos and diary entries from some of the men we had first learned about by watching the Spielberg/Hanks series “The Pacific” … men like Eugene Sledge and Robert Leckie.

There were also interesting Japanese propaganda pieces, bragging about the damage they had been inflicting on US forces in that part of the world.

Next stop: the Peleliu Peace Memorial Park on the southwestern tip of the island. The Japanese government built this memorial in 1985 for those who died on the islands of Palau during WWII.

From here, we could see Angaur island to the sw 7 miles away(now called Ngeaur). Our guide, Jerry, said the Germans had introduced monkeys to the island back in their day when they were mining phosphate on the island. Now, the monkeys rule the place!

On Sept 17, the 321st & 322nd Infantry Regiments of the 81st Infantry Division land.

[...] Japanese powerful air force had sank their 19 aeroplane carriers, 4 battleships, [numerous] cruisers and destroyers...

Just like 'Tokyo Rose' in game! [:D]

Then, it was off to lunch. We went to a public picnic area and ran into a contingent of foreign guests(not pictured) who had been invited to Palau to celebrate the inauguration of the President. It made for crowded conditions.

I spotted a tent with a photo of bombs on it so went inside and found “Cleared Ground Demining.”

This is an amazing non-profit group of people who has been training Palauans to recognize, clear and dispose of unexploded ordinance buried since WWII.
