October 17, 1938 : China

China is in a huge fight. The Japanese are very strong and are causing more losses than they are taking. We have brave cadres of conscript infantry that we can call on to fill the lines as they march on. They are a cruel enemy, and the world realizes it and continues to help us.

Here you see the advance the 1st Communist Army has made. Our advances are, in many ways, the result of the aid from the Soviets, and other friends.

November 14, 1938 : Soviet Union, France, Great Britain, United States

The watchers, the waiters, continue to build up their military as Germany does hers. Some nations are able to aid the Chinese in their struggle. All are looking to vulnerable spots where strikes might come from the sea.

Those nations with engineering teams are working on roads, improving the civilian infrastructure and facilitating defense.

November 14, 1938 : China

China pushes out of the mountains. It needs to be remembered that China is a weak nation, up against a much stronger one. Thanks to the aid of our friends we have been able to make some progress up here in the north. The Japanese are bringing some fine armored units to this area and this will slow our progress. They also have some long range fighters which will drive Chinese aircraft from the skies. Japanese anti-aircraft guns are showing at the front also.

December 12, 1938 : USSR, France, Great Britain, and USA

1938 has proven to be a peaceful year in Europe. Germany has become the land power in Europe, and all wonder what intentions she has. Her central European neighbors are nervous. The Soviet Union continues to send forces to help China, although she is reserving material for her own security.

France is busy training and upgrading her forces. Germany is strong, but has not been making threats.

Great Britain has a widely distributed Empire to prepare. The major constraint is shipping as commonwealth forces cannot get where they are desired.

The US military is looking to the Pacific frontier as Japan is becoming more powerful each month.

January 9, 1939 : Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

Happy new year. Except for the festering war in the Far East 1938 saw peace. Let it continue!

Santa did not have much in his bag for the Red Army. We continue to make the Soviet people more secure. We have plans for new weapons, but want to be sure we maintain a sufficient deterrent at all times.

The Reich continues to purchase fuel from us. We are beginning to become impatient at the slow pace of naval technology scheduled to arrive from Germany. The Red Navy wants to learn from German advancements.

Nations will always be tempted if their neighbors are seen as weak. We are striving to not be an attractive target for the Axis.

A quiet winter turn. The Japanese are really too strong to attack unless we get favorable circumstances.

February 6, 1939 : USSR, France, Britain, USA, China

No new wars, no major attacks anywhere. Some infrastructure improvements including roads.

The Soviet Union is building up armored strength. They have been sending some to the Chinese.

France and Britain are building up strength, even though they currently think the Germans will leave them alone and head East.

The USA has engineers overseas building roads.

China makes some small attacks.

March 6, 1939 : USSR, France, Britain, USA, China

No new wars, no major attacks anywhere. Some infrastructure improvements including roads.

The Soviet Union stood down this turn in the interest of promoting peace. Germany will do so next turn. While Germany and the USSR will never be allies, we want to show peace is possible.

France and Britain are building up strength, but will not attack first.

The USA is preparing for Philippines independence by building up the country.

China has a map of the Japanese forces in the south.

Why is there a border to northern part of that map behind Japanese lines?
Favoritism is alive and well here.

China had run some small units out through Japanese lines changing the control. The Japanese have never bothered to move a unit that way. The hexes may even be from the beginning of the game. In any case it is unocupied.

April 3, 1939 : USSR, France, Britain, USA, China

The Soviet Union is pleased with the peace in Europe. The German buildup on Polish and Czechoslovak borders is worrisome because the USSR has no desire for a common border with Nazi Germany. These middle European states deserve their homeland.

France also wants stability in eastern Europe. We are dedicated to Polish statehood, and are worried about the German exploits there.

Great Britain calls on the Commonwealth to prepare to defend the Empire. The continuing war in China is disrupting Asia.

The United States also is concerned by the Pacific, and is taking steps to protect its interests there.

China continues to suffer from the strong Japanese attacks.

To observe the worker's celebration we show a map of the western defenses of the Soviet Union. Now that we have Fascist neighbors in Romania we must be even more prepared for trouble.

29 May 1939 : All "allied" nations.

USSR : We look with awe at the German buildup. How do their people support this abundance of arms?
France : France notices some offensive (Panzer) units near our borders. Do the Germans plan to come west now?
Britain : The Benelux nations joined us. This entails a large amount of integration work, and it is worldwide, from the Congo to the East Indies.
USA : So little we can do.
China : We attack south of Taiyuan, and exploit, but not as far as we could.

26 June 1939 : All "allied" nations.

USSR : The USSR is forming the 3rd Mech Army to address the Italian presence in Romania. We do not expect the Italians to attack, but best to prepare.
France : French armor moves to support the Benelux forces.
Britain : We reinforce the DEI positions we formed last month.
USA : We are building infrastructure, but Congress is keeping a very tight hold on the purse strings.
China : The Japanese forced us to abandon our exploit south of Taiyuan. They are very strong and lightning strikes will not work yet.

24 July 1939 : All "allied" nations.

USSR : The 3rd Mech Army is ready to address the Italian presence in Romania. The Italians are really Romanians, under Italian command.
France : A French Mobile force is now located in Benelux.
Britain : Lots of reinforcements in the DEI positions. Australia is in strong shape.
USA : We are building roads in Panama. Exciting stuff for our engineers.
China : A quiet turn, and we pulled back a bit.
