Dec24.41
Lots of turns going on, we are doing ~3 turns per day since Saturday. This is good, but takes away time for AAR
so what has happened?
- He captured Brunei, he just landed on Manado and Rabaul; I didn't react to Manado or Brunei, I tried to hit Rabaul TFs, but found the cruiser distant cover; they dispatched CA Louisville and left CL Adelaide burning and in no position to escape
- KB is near Baker and it is moving back to Japanese controlled waters; it didn't hit anything (other than Catalinas), in the last 2 turns
- He captured Lingayen and Georgetown. Taiping was abandoned and will fall tomorrow
- Hong Kong still holds, will probably fall in the next few days
- No air war... other than China and a cap trap from time to time, there is minimal dogfighting.. there has been no attempt to bomb Manila, Clark or Singapore... really surprising; the consequences are that I have already repaired and withdraw all B-17s, around 50 P-40s and both Clark and Manila are at fort level 2; might get into 3 with some luck by the time he attacks. I have also repaired and withdrawn 4 DDs, 1 SS, a few AMs (they were destroyed). tomorrow PG Tulsa will run the gauntlet and probably will sink

Late to the discussion, but isn't Durability also a factor for whether, or not, a ship takes system damage when moving through deep water hexes?
Those tiny ship or boat types with a durability of 1 get beat up pretty quickly traversing deep water hexes.
PT boats are a good example of this.
I hope someone jumps and confirms, I don't know
I think Hans is right about durability being a factor, but the other one is speed. Just send the Queen Elizabeth or Queen Mary on a long voyage and note how much system damage they accumulate. The ships are huge, but their very high cruise speed always means damage from any water that gets above the gunnels.

I don't know.. I just sent QE from Australia to East Coast; I set it on turn1 and it reached east coast this turn (dec25)... it only got 1 point of system damage

No damage is accumulated off map. I was referring to on-map movement.

I think there may have been legal issues with sharing the maps on this forum, perhaps brought up by 2X3 or whoever owns the rights to the game. Anyway, Chemkid had to remove all access to the maps on this forum but he does make them available on other sites. I don't have a link because I don't use them.

Again, durability is not a factor taken into account. You are all attaching to much importance to ship durability. As a game metric it really is much more restricted in its application.
Any ship travel can result in damage. There are other things which can occur as part of the travel (eg refuelling) which can also generate some damage. Short legged ships are more likely to encounter these other factors.
The incurring of damage also can take into account the size and type of ship, plus the nature of the cargo.

a few slow turns, this is the update on Baker island
other news:
Manado battle still ongoing, it will take probably a few more turns to be captured
Same for Hong Kong, it will fall next time he attacks
Japanese TFs massing at Miri/ Brunei. I expect it to move to Singkawang very soon

Thanks for the clarification, Alfred.
I find it rather disappointing that durability is such a non factor in taking damage during sea voyages.
Just seems logical to me that small, less durable ships should take more damage from heavy seas than larger more durable ships, but I have never been a seaman so my view is based on pure speculation, rather than real experience.
I am not a seaman, but from what I have read, there are several ocean going small craft that can handle heavy seas well.
Looking at the flower corvette; from wikipedia:
They had a reputation of having poor sea-handling characteristics, most often rolling in heavy seas, with 80-degree rolls, 40 degrees each side of upright, being fairly common; it was said they "would roll on wet grass". Many crewmen suffered severe motion sickness for a few weeks until they acclimatised to shipboard life.[14] Although poor in their sea-handling characteristics, the Flowers were extremely seaworthy;

The Flower class were based on a whale-catcher design and rather than try to cut through the seas they bobbed like corks (high freeboard, shallow draft). Their low speed (14 kt max) also meant less impact when they did have to plow a heavy swell. A DD trying to do that at max speed would be asking for heavy damage to the forward superstructure and boats/davits along the sides.

Last turn I decided to evacuate some LCUs from Kuching, decision was based on the fact it is end of Dec and he has not yet invaded it; I thought there was a risk of bypassing it AND there are a few coastal guns there that I can use somewhere else, with better results
So... the evac TF was spotted, but only when it was already at Kuching; and since I was expecting him to react, I decided to send Pallisers' TF (CL Mauritius + DDs + DMs)...
Things went very well, surprisingly, the evac TF escaped with the precious coastal guns and I didn't lose any ship; moreover, it was the Japanese who left the battle, which is not very common.. maybe they were low on ammo?
Other than that, IJN submarines were on fire; several attacks and several ships, including one AP, sank

He is finally starting to move, after many turns of not much happening; he is most certainly behind schedule

- Hong Kong finally captured, after an heroic defense; very happy about this delay
- Ternate captured, it was long abandoned
- PI: battle for Manila should start soon, it is at level 3, so I hope it won't be taken easily
- Malaya: he is slowly advancing; he is near Kuala Lumpur/ Temuloh

- Very slow Japanese advance after the debacle at Soc Trang; he is now taking his time, and only invading with very strong supporting forces
- Light ship losses for Allies: 1 USN BB& CA, 2 DDs, 2 SS, 1 CL seriously damaged. Passenger ships, freighters, Aux and tankers within reason, nothing else to worry about. Because I still control Manila, Soerabaja, Singapore and because he dislikes port attacks, I was able to repair almost everything not lost during battle
Japan: heavy AK, AP, xAK losses otherwise only a couple DDs and a DMS at most
- Light aircraft losses for Allies: maybe with the exception of British; I tried to slow him down on Malaya, and that cost me many Blenheim/ Hudsons. USA intact, for some reason he didn't attack Clark, so after it reached level 3 fort, I simply withdrew or redeployed bombers and fighters. Some of these P-35s and P-26 are ready to be shipped to North Africa; Ike won't be happy
USN: only worried about Cat losses, he kept the KB near Canton for several turns, I had to keep track of it, even at a high cost of patrols shot down
Japan: I am happy with his bomber losses, as most were due to CAP traps
- I have a new name for this AAR; but because FOW, I will reveal it in a the next few turns.. a hint: I still control Singkawang

So what do you think he's doing with the KB? He going deep in SOPAC - Noumea, Suva?
KB was seen, in full form (6 CVs), around 4 turns ago, moving on direction to Kwajalein. This after several turns (more than 5) trying to raid close to Canton.. This raid yielded poor results, only around 5 empty xAKs sank
When he invaded Baker island, with KB support, I thought he was doing a big surprise invasion; I was expecting following fleets to capture Christmas island, Canton and Palmyra soon after. He would had captured them easily, as I didn't have the time to reinforce them at all by mid Dec41... but he didn't, instead he raided with KB and forced me to rearrange convoys to move in a much southerly route. Baker alone is not sustainable and I will capture back in a few months
Thinking about Noumea/ Suva; by now some of the convoys have arrived, I think I can defend them, or at least defend Suva. This of course, depends on the level of forces he brings, 3 or 4 divisions and he will succeed easily. That being said, as per intelligence, he doesn't have those divisions, he can't bring that level of troops, not right now, maybe after Singapore. I think he has already committed 4th and 21st Divs to Malaya in addition to those starting there (Imp Grds, 18th 5th). PI invasion looks at historical level, 33rd is moving to Burma. He just freed one division in HK, but he will most likely use it for DEI. If he comes with regiment sized LCUs or SNLFs, he will be defeated
You raised a good point, I have been focused too much on the Canton area, and I don't think I have a proper naval search in place for SoPac. He has evidenced an inclination for raiding with KB, and he might be moving on a southern course; There is a big GAP between Port Moresby and Canton that he can easily exploit, I will need to set up patrols ASAP, as I really don't want to discover the KB when it launches strikes
Use the B-17Ds for Naval Search. They have the range even if their ship identification is currently poor. Even consider using the other 4Es as well as the Hudsons. Have the units partially train on naval search when they do search to improve their ship recognition skills.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.
I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are missing!

No, those are "my precious" [:D]
I am hoarding B-17s. I don't want operational losses. So as of now they are used for training, but in a not so distant future, they will bring just retribution to the Japanese enemy, plus there are several Cat squadrons, many were on training mode in PH, I will just need to move them to forward bases
The good news is that it is really difficult to hide a big KB; a dozen per base, with the correct arcs, will be enough for KB warning, ideally I would like a 2nd squadron at lower altitude for submarine spotting, as I have had losses in the Brisbane-Noumea-Suva line; but at this stage of the war, I need to put priorities
