RE: "We want the big ones!" DBB-C vs IdahoNYer (J)
January 13/14, 1942
Highlights:
KB now cruises off Tasmania, bombed an empty port at Melbourne and managed to sink the lone AKL still at sea in that area - little ROI so far for the fuel expended. There have been multiple fat convoys carrying ground and air reinforcements bound for Melbourne in the area between Tahiti and Wellington - they have all turned around as soon as KB showed up off New Zealand. Luckily I saw it coming, those Kiwi Hudsons on naval search have prevented a major disaster. Ed is going for the oil now - Tarakan falls, Samarinda and Balikpapan invaded.

RE: "We want the big ones!" DBB-C vs IdahoNYer (J)
January 15/16, 1942
Highlights:
Noumea captured by Japan. US carriers bomb oil centers on Sakhalin.
Bases lost / invaded:
Japanese forces CAPTURE Nanyang !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Sandakan !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Samarinda !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Balikpapan !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Noumea !!!
Dinagat is occupied by the Japanese
Madjene is occupied by the Japanese
Amphibious Assault at Madjene (65,103)
Amphibious Assault at Loewoek (71,101)
Allied ships lost:
Netties sank a bunch of HDMLs at Singers
Enemy ships sunk:
PB Takunan Maru sunk by CA Chicago east of Paramushiro
DD Murasame torpedoed by SS Sealion - sinking sounds heard
Naval war:
"IJN-KB" has engaged cloaking device - no idea if it is heading W from Melbourne (unlikely), NE or E.
"USN-KB" has engaged cloaking device as well and sneaked into the Sea of Okhotsk to hit the oil centers at Shikuka in a hit-and-get-the-hell-out-again raid. Accompanying CruDes-TF has dispatched a picket ship on the way in.

Air war:
The usual bombings of Singers, Bataan, Wenchow, also of Port Moresby, Koepang, Kolaka (near Kendari) and ground forces in China.
Ground war:
Japanese forces have retreated from Wuchow in South China. No contact around Changhsa. Offensive in China seems to concentrate on the Central Plains - Sian corridor. Manila and Bataan still uninvested, enemy concentrating at Clark Field. Mindanao garrison slowly being grinded down in the mountains. In Malaya, enemy forces at Johore Baru still not showing any movement arrows in direction of Singers, while Japanese units are hunting remnants in the jungles of Central Malaya. Fall of undefended Pegu in Burma imminent.
Housekeeping / Preparations in Rear areas (soon to be front areas):
With Noumea lost, Allied reinforcement convoys at sea are being rerouted to New Zealand to defend the LOC US-Oz and to prepare to counter-attack.
Pago-Pago garrisoned by Marine Rgt with more Marines on the way, but no air cover (the four available Marine Fighter units are deployed on my four available CVs).
Port Moresby defenses build around 23rd Australian Brigade (of the 8th Aus Division) plus local forces - total AV 239 behind level-3 forts and 53k supplies. Being bombed daily and now also naval bombarded - seems to be next on the list of Japanese conquests. Aussies expected to sell their lifes dearly.
First Australian Brigade returning from the Middle East has boarded fast APs at Aden and is heading for Oz, but probably arriving too late to reach Port Moresby in time.
Diego Garcia, Addu Atoll "secured" and garrisoned with very green Indian Brigades (44th-46th) - I hope these locations will remain rear training grounds.
Ceylon evacuated except local garrisons and most of the supplies and fuel drained - unfortunately I can only do a "Sir Robin" and not a "Scorched Earth".
Defenses taking shape at Madras, Diamond Harbor, Chittagong and Imphal with an Indian or Burmese Division at each base, but of course won't be able to resist a determined Japanese attack. 18th British Div in reserve. No air forces worth mentioning.
"Fortress Palembang" holds remnants of Commonwealth and Dutch air forces - 115 fighters, 9 level bombers, 9 torpedo bombers - and ground defenses build around the 11th Indian Division, two brigades of the 9th Indian Division (its third brigade is waging guerilla war in the jungles near Kuantan) and assorted British and Dutch Bn, most of them air-evaced from Borneo and Singers - total AV 650 behind level-3 forts and 43k supplies. Malaya Army HQ in the process of being airlifted from Singers to provide more support. Bracing for impact.

And the situation in Malaya, where remnants of the North / Central Malaya garrisons having been cut-off from Singers by the Mersing gambit are now playing cat-and-mouse with pursuing Japanese forces.

SitRep:
My intention is to keep my carriers as far away as possible from KB until at least after the April upgrades - guess I cannot do much better, with KB off Auckland and the US carriers off Paramushiro. The US Fleet will return to base for some debriefing and gathering of lessons-learned. While the damage caused by the carrier raid was light, some valuable combat experience has been gained. It may also insert some caution into any Japanese plans to invade in the Aleutians. Lacking ground forces to defend, the Navy will have to be ready to intervene.
The US West Coast ports are almost void of shipping - everything available is at sea pushing reinforcements, supplies and fuel into the PTO. Only the lack of PPs prevent a shipping bottleneck. I have three full Infantry Divisions (27th, 40th, 41st) sitting at San Diego awaiting PPs to be bought out. I *may* have enough for one of them when the first convoy returns from the South Pacific. But there are so many bad leaders to be changed...
In the South Pacific, the life-line to Australia is almost severed - with Noumea and Norfolk Islands in Japanese hands and KB roaming between Oz and New Zealand, convoys must pass to the south of New Zealand. Now KB is uncomfortably close again - in strike range of Auckland. A USN sub tender which has just arrived will try to flee under the cover of the night. The five S-Boats she has just serviced will venture out to seek battle. Convoys at Wellington will stop unloading and head back into the open sea, convoys en route will go sight-seeing in French Micronesia to bid their time. Worse, KB is not alone, there are at least three other TFs in the same hex. Naval search indicates an "AMC" type in one of them. I hope this is not an invasion convoy!

January 19/20, 1942
Highlights:
Japanese TFs off Auckland have vanished.
DDs sink more pickets in the North Pacific.
Defense in the mountains of Mindanao crumbles.
Bases lost:
Japanese forces CAPTURE Kaoping !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Malaybalay !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Kolaka !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Buna !!!
Japanese forces CAPTURE Efate !!!
Tandjoengpinang is occupied by the Japanese
Tagbilaran is occupied by the Japanese
Bases invaded:
Amphibious Assault at Donggala (68,99)
Amphibious Assault at Batan Island (85,70)
Allied ships lost:
None?
Japanese ships sunk:
PB Okuyo Maru, PB Heiyo Maru, PB Higashiyama Maru, AS Nagoya Maru - all by DDs Dewey and Hull in the North Pacific.
Intel:
2/4th/C Division is loaded on xAP Haruna Maru moving to Kendari > staging point for operations against Koepang, Makassar, Darwin, Java ?
Air war:
The usual heavy bombings of Singers, Bataan, Wuchow. Scattered bombings in China, unescorted or only with Nate escorts - the Flying Tigers are finally on their way to China after a month of training in India to extract a price from this raids.
A handful of B-17Ds from the PI are now based at Java for night-bombing the oil centers at Balikpapan and Samarinda - no success so far, Nates and Oscars provide night-CAP!
First flock of B-17s is on the way from PH to Auckland via Pago-Pago to start recon / bombing of Norfolk Is.
Naval war:
KB and accomanying TFs off Auckland have engaged their cloaking devices and vanished - that is ok, means no invasion of New Zealand. Mini-KB is supporting the invasion of Bandjermasin - Dutch subs are being repositioned to intercept. Almost all US subs - except the pig boats of the S-class - are engaged in supply runs to Bataan. Allied cruisers and DDs have been hiding at Oosthaven to be ready for a dash against potential landings at Palembang, but so far no preparatory bombings / bombardments and the Japanese fleet units observed earlier at Singkawang seem to have left. It seems likely that Ed will take Singers and Java first to eliminate the danger of Allied bombing attacks against the Palembang oil - the classic approach. I will reorganise the ABDA surface forces into Western Java and an Eastern Java strike force.
Land war:
The fall of Malaybalay has freed-up a Japanese division for duty elsewhere - Luzon, Darwin, Port Moresby, Koepang, Java?

Ships sunk:
xAK Izumo Maru, xAK Senko Maru by PTs at Iba
Land war:
On Luzon, my forces are split between Bataan and Manila. The Japanese have concentrated at Clark Field. Problem - Bataan is running out of supplies and although dozens of Fleet submarines haul supplies from Java, it is a drop in the bucket. I still have 56k supplies at Manila, so I have ordered almost all fighting units from both Bataan and Manila to advance to Clark Field, hoping that the can retreat together to Manila. Alas, one tank units went ahead of everybody else and is currently facing the enemy at Clark Field alone. However, the other units should arrive next turn (2 miles to go for the Bataan gang, 15 miles for the Manila units). If the Japanese decide to attack the lone tank unit, they may find the entire Philipine Army in a meeting engagement - could get bloody.
The stack of Japanese units at Johore Baru finally shows movement arrows in the direction of Singers - bracing for impact!
Naval war:
Japanese carriers popping-up all over the map:
1. KB or at least a large part of it (KB-1) has been spotted a couple of hexes west of Pago-Pago, luckily a convoy dropping off Marines has finished unloading and left in time, it is no retiring at full speed towards my main staging and refueling base in the SoPac - Tahiti. The Japanese operational report for Jan 23rd includes the information that I am expanding the Tahiti base - my biggest fear is now that KB will pay a visit!
2. Carrier planes have been spotted by TFs off New Zealand, and an AMC patrolling the air search gap between Auckland and Rarotonga has been sunk by Vals south of Raoul Is. So, there is at least one carrier (KB-2) prowling the approaches to New Zealand. My convoys plying between Wellington and Tahiti have been ordered to clear the area at full speed, but some of them have been picked up by carrier search planes and submarine-launched float planes - my second-biggest fear is that KB-2 will hit Wellington, where the liner Queen Elizabeth is slowly unloading a base force into lighters - she's too big to dock...
3. Mini-KB is covering an amhib force unloading at Denpasar (just east of Java) to secure the (undefended) airfield. The Eastern Java strike force which has been organised two turns ago is in range to intercept - but has been spotted by air. As bad luck would have it, I also discover that USS Houston and HMAS Perth are "hors combat" with torpedo hits, Perth is even in danger of sinking. It seems they have been attacked by search planes - I cannot find "normal" air attacks in the replay or the report files. Anyway, I have reorganized the Eastern Java Strike force into two groups, one will rush full speed to Denpasar and the other the location of Mini-KB, with reaction range = 6 and retirement/disband orders to Soerabaya.
What else:
Japanese ships bombarding Port Moresby, good old gunboat Soerabaya again bombarding Johore Bahru.
A xAKL blockade runner has managed to slip through the Japanese net to deliver a few hundred tons of desperately needed supplies at Manila - and to return to Darwin alive!
More importantly, the runner also delivered a bunch of PT boats (well, that's how I explain the fact that I have spawned a dozen PTs from the Manila supply stocks).
These freshly arrived PT boats have surprised two small Japanese convoys unloading reinforcements at Iba, sinking two xAk while losing one PT.
Air war:
The usual bombings of Singers, Bataan, Wuchow, Port Moresby, Palembang.
B-17Ds get an oil hit at Samarinda.
Japanese air strikes have ceased in range of the Flying Tigers - they have been ordered to rebase.
The busiest Pilots are still the transport pilots :

Naval war:

Naval war:
SS Cachalot lays minefield at Umboi Island ( 100 , 125) and sets course for Sydney
SS Triton lays minefield at Izu Oshima ( 113 , 62) and sets course for Pearl Harbor
Japanese TBs hunt PTs in the PI, the surprise is gone. The PTs will hide at Manila as a fleet-in-being to force the Japanese to assign assets to keep watch.
The two groups of the Eastern Java strike force failed to engage Mini-KB, but ran into two SAGs, suffering and inflicting heavy damage - but couldn't prevent the Japanese from landing on Java.
Mini-KB entered the Indian Ocean unmolested, sinking cripples HMAS Perth and USS Houston.
Air war:
The usual bombings of Singers, Bataan, Port Moresby, Palembang, Wenchow.
B-17s based at Soerabaya scored another oil hit at Samarinda.
B-17s arrived at Auckland to augment naval search looking for enemy carriers in the area.
Ground war:
Rescue operation at Clark Field seems to be a success, Japanese attack beaten off with acceptable losses by the Bataan gang alone, Manila troops arrived half a say too late. The entire stack will now moveback to Manila.
Rangoon has been abandoned, the garrison tries to reach Akyab and the city has been occupied by Japanese forces without a fight. Force preservation seems to be more important than some symbolic "last stand" without chance of success.
Rear areas:
Shipping in the South Pac still suspended, with KB in "rush range" of Tahiti, tenders and AOs at that base are being ordered to hide at atolls of French Polynesia
Intel:
Previous report of sinking of DD Nagatsuki incorrect. Ship sighted and engaged at 62, 103

RE: "We want the big ones!" DBB-C vs IdahoNYer (J)
February 02/03, 1942
Highlights: Convoy spotted south of Rabaul heading SW - invasion Port Moresby? Norfolk Is. bombed by Allies. Japanese ground attack at Tsiaotso - issue in doubt.
Bases lost:
Japanese forces CAPTURE Lomblen
Japanese forces CAPTURE Palopo
Japanese forces CAPTURE Munda
Japanese forces CAPTURE Babar
Bassein is occupied by the Japanese
Meiktila is occupied by the Japanese
Ships lost:
SS KIX sunk by DD Nenohi near Bandjermasin
Air actions:
The first operational and full-strength group of B-17s has made its combat debut. Based at Auckland, it has conducted milk runs against Norfolk Island (which is slated to be the location of the first Allied counter-offensive - ground forces are deploying to NZ for this purpose).
Ground actions:
Unexpected Japanese ground attack at Tsiaotso which caused heavy losses on both side - the Chinese won't be able to withstand a second attack and are ordered to fall back towards Sian. This is a dangerous developement, reinforcements can be made available only by abandoning Yenan.
Naval actions:
The USN is pleased to announce that the drydock Dewey has escaped from the PI, having been towed all the way across the Pacific by three small merchant ships. All have arrived safely at Midway, putting an end to Japanese boasts of having complete control of the Pacific.
The USN is contrite to admit that an administrative SNAFU has left two divisions of four-stacker DDs in the DEI with orders to upgrade on Feb 01 - they are now stuck for 9 days in a location under threat of enemy invasion. Some heads will roll if they have to be scuttled...
