The game has old programming running on your new hardware and operating system. To make them work well together you need to set up text "switches" that help the program find the right OS locations and get them through the new hardware. See the Tech Section discussion on 'slow performance' for descriptions of the switches, what they do and where to put them on a shortcut that points directly to the game engine (NOT the Autorun.exe that the base game installs on your desktop).

Re: This is How I install WITP-AE
Hello,
New want to be player here. With the game on sale now, how can I download it, not install it, get a new computer in a month or two, then move the game over to the new machine? Is it just a simple matter of moving the file folder? Or is it more complex than that?
Thanks,
limpetmine

Re: This is How I install WITP-AE
I am not sure my experience still applies but way back in 2009 I got the base game on DVD. I then downloaded the latest patches as they came (the compressed file). I then made a copy in another folder in case of issues and double clicked the patch file to get it installed. About 3 years ago my hard drive crashed and I was not able to recover any game data so - using my game serial number- I downloaded the base file again from Matrix and also the latest patch. I copied and installed them.
So, as long as you are able to download the file and patch (as opposed to starting the installation from the Matrix site), you should be able to copy those two files to your new computer. Double clicking the base game first will install it on the new computer and then double click the patch. Save the copies of those two files offline if you want them as backup.
You can also just download and install them on your current computer and then, using your purchase registration number do it again on your new computer. If you already started playing the game on your old computer you need only copy the files in the SAVE folder to the new install on your new computer.
You cannot move a complete installed game by just copying it from one computer to the other. It needs to be installed on the new computer to update the registry which tells the new computer where to find the game file. PS - never change anything in the Registry file!

No you can't move the installed game from one machine to another. The game needs to install correct on every machine it is on. You can of course move the setup files and you can make a copy of the game on the same computer obvious with a different folder name.limpetmine wrote: Wed Nov 26, 2025 3:00 pm Hello,

When you buy the game from Matrix there give you a serial number that is used to install. You can go back to Matrix anytime via the my page link and re-download the game at anytime using this serial number.

Re: This is How I install WITP-AE
I've got the game downloaded and the 26a and 1128 patches downloaded.
Are there any other patches/beta/?? that I need to download before I attempt to extract and install the game?
With this game being as old as it is, and a the depth of commentary and responses in the forum, may I suggest that a sticky be created that has the most current install requirements listed? I've started with the newest comments first, and have been working newer to older. Kull has some great posts and I look forward to digging into this massive game.

Re: This is How I install WITP-AE
26a is the last official version and it comes with a patch 26b and is stable (stables a bt strong, lets say has fewer bugs). 28 is the latest beta but is playable but makes some significant changes to 26 and more bugs still being ironed out.

Wow! Thank you very much for this post. Up and running! Now just have to finish the super "Gaming DoJo" tutorial and start playing.
Re: This is How I install WITP-AE
You will make many mistakes your first few times starting a game, so be sure to save (forever) your first turn setup to modify when you want to restart the same scenario.

Re: This is How I install WITP-AE
I just purchased WITP AE to use on my new computer. A couple of problems.
1. I cannot contact Tech Support at Matrix.
This ID and PW do not work. When I try and use a new one I get Email already used.
Edit: I guess I got through with a slitherine password. Sent email to tech support.
2. After downloading AE I try to 'Update' and get an error.
Update feature does not work? Is this game still supported by Matrix? This is in the "Start Box" for AE 'Update'
The Beta skips over the Start page.
3. The Operations Report and Intelligence report do not appear on the heading bar.
The "O" and "L" hotkeys do not work. The other menu's show up just not these two.
I have not even added the Beta updates yet. The game runs and I have not found any other bugs.
BTW Hotkeys don't work on the Beta either, but the game will run.
Any solutions/ comments are greatly appreciated.
Updated for "zebrazwo" Post below. It happens in plain vanilla before I even update the Beta's.
I will let you know when I get a response from Tech Support.
It is so annoying after I figured out how to update for Windows 11, that Matrix couldn't even include an update
for Windows.

2. How are you trying to update? The 'normal' way is to download the original version installer, run that, then download the version you want to install (last official 26, 28(beta, which has a bunch of errors that need to be fixed) and run that.
3. What version are you talking about? 27 beta should be ignored because of the extra (useless according to many, bases) and 28 beat, well, if you really want to. Personally I run a version called 27, but not the beta 27 (just to make things easy to follow of course

Re: This is How I install WITP-AE
Hi ,
I'm sorry to hear you are having problems with the download of your game's update. Usually this issue is caused by the interference of a Internet security program (a firewall, an anti-virus, an anti-malware, etc.) with the game update feature. Please check if any of your Internet security programs is interfering with the download from our ftp servers.
Alternatively, you can manually download and install the updates from your account's "MY PAGE" download area (*) or from the DOWNLOAD section in the game product's page.
Regarding the issue with the hotkeys, I cannot reproduce it, but I have the game updated with the last non-beta update 1.01.26a.
(*) You can download games and patches/updates from your account's download area provided they are registered to the account. Please see the forum post below which explains how to do this:

Kind Regards,
Edited: Thx Slitherine for the quick followup. I think I found a workaround below

Re: This is How I install WITP-AE
Are you using any of the switches to run the game?
Assuming you are running Win X version.
I can't reproduce any of the problems you have mentioned.
I have even tried in a base version (the original installer)

Re: This is How I install WITP-AE
I have a workaround solution, totally in game.
In the toolbar "Preferences "Combat Report O/N"
It pops up on the tool bar and hotkeys work if you leave it "ON".
I thought that was only while the turn is running, and it is WAD.
Am I that stupid? Technology F's with ME, all the time. Can't wait for AI because I will be their Kryptonite.
My "New" PC is from 2017 and it was the best Nvidia had at the time. I never touched anything internally.

Re: This is How I install WITP-AE
This indicates you started the game using the Game Shortcut placed on your desktop by the install program. There are many warnings not to use the one from the original program (the 1126Beta one is OK) because it points to a defunct Menu Program called Autorun.exe. That menu fails on updates and does not work with switches among other things and should never be used. Create your own shortcut by right clicking on the game's .exe file and choosing Create Shortcut. Move (drag and drop) or copy/paste this shortcut to your desktop. Then install your switches per other threads about the subject and start the game.Bullshark: 2. After downloading AE I try to 'Update' and get an error.

And yes, the toggle for Combat Reports is for during game execution. Some people prefer to have the turns execute as fast as possible with no pauses to read reports. Ops Report and Combat Reports used together tell you about how the war is going. Ops Report and SigInt reports together will help clarify what you have detected about enemy movements and plans but FOW will still mess with you a lot of the time - yet it's better than knowing nothing.

"D:\Matrix Games Scen 2\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -SingleCpuOrders -cpu2 -f -deepColor -dd_sw -altFont -cd –pxf1680 –pyf1050
Start In "D:\Matrix Games Scen 2\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition"
I just created the shorcut above. Same situation.
Thx for the reply BB but I am still confused about what I am doing wrong?

The game is installed in this folder?
Code: Select all
D:\Matrix Games Scen 2\Re: This is How I install WITP-AE
Thanks for the replies, the game is running fine. Alienware zips through the turn.
I create a unique "Scen2" WITP for those games. Not sure how I added an apostrophe, but once again as
long as the names match the shortcut will take me to the right place. This is for my new 28 Beta games.
