Personally think was a good choice.

I know a guy serving in the USN (USS Stout), and he tends to agree.

Didn't HMCS Protecteur (should be spelled Protector) have to cut short a Gulf deployment a few years back because half the crew "were expecting?" Pretty sad. Getting the clap was not a big enough deal to effect a ships operational readiness. This is silly. Same as having all French speaking crews in the Canadian naval service. Let's purposely complicate communication issues. Political correctness blows the big one.

Bilingualism is ANCIENT, basically it was a part of Cnfederation. And I agree, a dumb idea. Although apparently, despite a high vote for the Bloc in the last election, feelings are that Quebec hasn't been more pro-Canada in 50 years.

I'd say why, but it would probably start a fight that we don't need.

As for the smoking, that one I agree with. We recently instituted a rather strict non-smoking policy in this city, and a lot of us are happy (and actually, California already had a similar ban before even TO did it, so its not like we made it up or anything). And much to he chagrin of coffee shops and bars, people still go to them to drink coffee and beer, just without the polution.

The reasoning for it is sound. There is a saying, your right to throw a random punch ends at the begining of my nose. So your right to fill the air with toxic gasses ends when I might breathe that gas.

Now if we could just pass a law about flatulence!

A lot of people are always talking about their own rights, but forget that other people have rights as well. The crux of rights discussions is where your rights end, and my rights begin. Its something that I notice a lot of political extremists (both on the right and the left) in the US and Canada seem to forget.


Although in general I understand your complaint. As Canadians we tend to be too nice. And often the government - doesn't matter if its PC, NDP, or Liberal - tend to muck about too much in business that they shouldn't be involved in.


Anyway. I'm hijaking the topic here.

I agree, warships should have 'poetic' names, or good martial sounding names (so naming after Military leaders or famous battles is good). Cities and states (provinces) are good to, because these are ships of your country.
But some bloody politician? Yuck.

I was always under the impression that the Navy never swallowed JFK, because he escaped being court-martialled when he lost his boat and got a medal instead...

I may be wrong, but I don't think Navy liked JFK nearly as much as they liked Nimitz, Halsey and other real sea dogs.

The USS Essex also has a namestake from UK-US wars, she was captured by the RN and turned into a convict ship. IIRC she was armed with powerful, but short ranged, cannons. The RN ship that captured her kept out of her range and pounded her until she lowered her flag.

I guess as a CV she didn't need to be worried by being outranged by surface ships.

Perhaps starting with the top five sub aces of the war and work from there. Instead we get VIRGINIA... no offense to that great state, but it's just not right!!! Not that a really dislike JFK as President (lousy personal life, but as Democratic Presidents go, really one of the best), nor do I question his service to his country or his courage . . . but . . .

That was really some trick getting a 80ft 38ton PT Boat rammed by a 378ft 2100ton destroyer. A corageous man, but not necessarily the greatest PT-Boat skipper of all time. Actually, President Kennedy probably said it best when asked how he became a war hero: "It was absolutely involuntary; they sank my boat."

If Ike were just a mere general of his time I can see the point but he was the ultimate commander in europe basically, while his being president might also have come in play he was the Allied commander who won in europe.

I believe it defines Nuclear powered CV's?

CVN came out when Nuclear powered CV's were launched, I recall the CV tag for Carl Vinson while it still operated when the first CVN's came out.
