RE: The Chinese syndrome

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

The entire Chinese central front is collapsing. What was unexpected and unpredictable has happen. In the Zenit of his power the Japanese Empire has to face the first real crisis, where it was less expected. The Chinese armies are sieging Chagsha. No way to brig in reinforcments, as all my units are still wandering in the rice-fields.One brave tank rgt managed to get onto the railway , but due to the fatigue and the overwelming enemy forces it has been pushed back with heavy losses. The 2 regiments that defend chagsha will face tomorrow more than 50,000 chinese, with no forts to count on. The air units have already been evacuated, but the loss of this capital city will mean something like the loss of Rostov for the Germans in 43......A DISASTER[:(]
All this happens while Manila and Singapore are falling in japanese hands, but these good news won't put in a scondary position the incredible and terrible chinese affair.
The The Invasion of Kendari and Palembang are still on the list and in 2 weeks both these bases should be in my hands. I still have to consider what to do with Timor and with PM...but i really can think quitely to this goals while my men are trapped in the bloody fields of China...........

LOST VICTORIES-The chinese offensive

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

What to say? I'm living a nightmare in that damned asian continent. The chinese took back Chagsha and now my entire army is cut out of the supply route. i do not have anything to trow in the battle and now my whole railway line is treathened. I'm still stuk in the fields and now he can advance wherever he wants with something like 60 units!!!!! Really do not know what to do...and if this is not enough, he's putting more troops at Canton, and i spotted 3 units moving towards Nanning....incredible:the chinese that push back Japan in early 42[:@]
At Reaghen now there are 50,000 allied men and the same at Mouleim...i think in 2 more weeks he can move sothwards and manace Bankok and my Malaya pensinsula.
Singapore finally fell. Now i'll take out those 200 mines from the port and then lounch as soon as possible the BELMONT-2 operation, hoping that by that time he would not already had overtaken my positions at Tavoy and Reaghen-_-''[:-]
My first pbem match is prooving me how challenging could be a human opponent.......[:o]

RE: LOST VICTORIES-The chinese offensive

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

Well, i've read some other AARs and few threads on the main forum...it's embarassing! It seems like i'm the only one who has experienced these problems with China! I have to say that my opponent surprised me with his aggressive tactic many times. While in the pacific his aggressiveness costed him more than what damaged me, in China my stupidity and his boldness are making the unbelivable happening.
So, as a summary:
-Burma front:- stalling-if i do not do something REALLY smart( like op.BELMONT) i will face, for sure, a counteroffensive from Rangoon.
-South east Pac front:- still waiting for his carriers to come up and play. in the while i'm hunting his unescorted convoys with my KB2.Tarawa and lunga are being fortified, while i still have to decide what to do with Lae and PM. I'm still unsure about that.
-South-Southwest pac front:- Singapore fell, Manila nearly. Palembang will fall in few days. Java is my next big obj. As soon as the PI front will be enmy-free i will lounch this invasion. The problem is that, at the moment, i doubt i can effort 2 big operations, like BELMONT2 and JAVA, at the same time.
-China front: collapsing[:(]
the VP situation is not good at all. A/c losses are exactly equal, and this is an allied Victory. I've been using my zeros too much, and, with this new patch, the AVG is a tough nut to crak, even with 80-experienced zero crews.

Any advice mates? Priority goes to Java or to Burma front?

Well, I must say that this is a first for me to see.[X(] I hate the new AVG rule, it is not even historical, the AVG never faced the Zero in combat nor naval pilots. They faced Army pilots and Oscar 1B's.

2 divisions plus a brigade prep for Java, 1 division head for Burma and everything else needs to head for China to help stabalize the situation. If the main PI has fallen, then all those divisions need to head to China also.

China- You can release the division in Peking by moving 2 mongol Cav divisions in. Move the 110th division (in the base right next door to Peking) to Peking to get on the rail. Look for any divisions anywhere that are free. Do not worry about the garrison factor at this point in China. Strip everything and move it forward. Form every available unit into a army and move to halt his advance.

Good luck.

Whoa, I disagree totally. The Chinese are not very strong, do not overreact like this. The supply cost to repair these damaged bases will be very costly later on. Japan has plenty of extra units they can free up without stripping garrison requirements. Try dividing a few units and leaving behind enough to maintain the garrison while moving out the extra formations not needed. Bases without any industry do not need garrisons of course (for now anyway), but do not allow your industries in China to get damaged due to inadequate garrisons; it could ruin you from a supply standpoint.

So far it only looks like a couple regiments have been defeated. Pull back to your starting off point and hunker down while you extricate the off-road armies. Move them southeast across the rice fields if you have to, the Chinese will have to come off the roads to get to them. BUT, if possible, move them back onto the rail east and then move east back to your own territory to recover once you reach friendly lines. Even though they're off road, they can still trace supply unless surrounded by enemy zocs. So getting back to friendly territory shouldn't take too long unless the Chinese move off-road too.

Thanks for the input guys.Really appreciate them. I ordered to my stuck-army to divide in two blocks. The main one( 1500 assault points) is something like 35/40 out of 60 miles away from the railroad between Chagasha and ...do not remeber the spelling , the city just south west of Chagasha. This should interrput the supply lines of the chinese, so that he will be forced not to advance towards my interior bases from Chagasha, but come out and face my men. The other smaller sub-army will move (0-60 miles) to the rail-hex just east of Chagasha, hoping he does not advance there.
I cannot move anything else at the moment. My divisions in the PI are still involved in the Manila affair, and i already have moved towards the front all the available garrison units. If i conquer Yenen soon i could move some more divisions to the south. At Canton i'm still waiting that my units become ready to fight again.3 of them have 74 out of 400 squads available[X(]
Burma rapresents another headhace. As soon as i come back from office i'll post some screenshots. my armies are facing now something like 150,000 well dig-in men. If he will advance southwards i'm sure i'll have some problems holding the line. My only hope is to follow the footsteps of Pzg and try an Indiav adventure behind his lines . I agree this new rule for the AVG is just crazy! They're nearly better than my 80 experienced navy pilots rinding on zeros![:-]

At this conditions, the victory for Japan becomes just dream...[:(]

Sorry, I meant the bases without industry/resources do not matter damage wise. I spoke to soon and too vague. Without knowing what units you have already moved etc, it is hard to give advice.

At start, you have 4 divisions on the coast which can be freed up by replacing with small SNLF's. One Regiment can be freed up by dividing a brigade, Peking division can be freed with 2 Mongol div etc. But I do all this on turn 1, so it is hard to compare.

I do disagree about not fearing the Chinese though. Once they start routing Japanese forces, they can steam roller you. Not sure how all those Japanese units got off road though, I guess you were chasing individual units. I leave them alone and keep 1 reg/brigade or Armor units on the rails behind my main armies to keep them from cutting off my armies. Sooner or later I will cut them off by taking the cities or they will become weakened by lack of supply and easily routed.

Burma, you will probably have to either go on the defensive until China is sorted out. I guess you have 3-4 divisions in Burma? Alot of those troop numbers you are facing will be the Chinese forces assigned to Southeast Command. Ron did the same thing to me in Burma and sucked me into India where I faced 1 Aus and 1 Brit division well dug in at Dacca. I guessed wrong, I thought he had moved them south to impede my advance to cut the supply to China. India will take 4-6 Divisions IMO. That is just to punch through at Dacca and supplying them will be a bugger if he still holds Akryba (sp?).

You will not have enough PP's to release any major combat forces from Japan or Manchuria, of course you do not need to change HQ's to march Manchuria forces to China and use them. I self impose a rule on myself for this though.

Your points are good mate.Later in the afternoon( European time) i'll post a detailed screeshot of my units in china and their positions. But, in the meanwhile, believe me: every single unit has been mobilized since turn 1.Bases without industry have been left without garrisons and many big units have been divided so to trasfer the not-needed men up to the front. I've already reconed some of the units that the allies have placed in Burma. I did not see any chinese unit so far. I have to find where the 18th UK div is placed, but, looking at the HUGE ammount of ships he's being sending to Rangoon in the last month, should show that he has moved a lot of indian unit sown to Rangoon. At this moment in Burma i have the Imperial Guard Div, the 55th and the 33rd plus 2 mixed brigades. 2 paras unit and 4 snlf units are sitting at Tavoy and Bankok waiting to be dropped at Pagan to cut his supply routes. But this must be done in a complex operation that involves and advance towards rangoon and a Big Landing a Chadumpur(sp??).If not, my paras will just be cannon fodder.
My fear now is that when my chinese army will be back on the railway it will be too tired to face a Chinese shock attack( to which he's particularly used to). If this happens i can only sit down, pray my Gods, and wait for the slings and arrows of this outrageous fortune....

Well that answered the China question for me. looks like you will have to see what shape the army is in after they reach the rails. Might think about keeping them together until they recoup their strength though.

I take it the AVG is playing around in Rangoon? I smell a couple mongo bombardment groups heading to Rangoon and resupplied from Tavoy. Round robin the place over and over again. LRCAP the task force at all times to help keep his a/c off them. Use Zeros for CAP, not Oscars. You can do this, now that Singapore is yours. That will help shut down his airfields and destroy a/c plus cause huge casualties. Maybe move 2+ CV's up to stop his shipping in Rangoon. If he has placed that many forces into Rangoon, if you block his supply efforts and retreat paths, starve him for awhile at the same time bombard with ships the whole time.

Well, i'm puzzeled. The Burma front is far from stabilizing. He's massing so many troops there, and i was not able, even if i sunk so many ships, to stop that flow of reinforcements and supply. BTW i took the suggestion given me and prepared a strong Bombardment TF(2 BBs, 5CAs , 2 Cls and 6 dds). This will sail from Camabara bay. The aim is to knock down the AVG and to burn some supplies at Rangoon. I'm quite sure he has mined the whole port, so i expect heavy losses. Tavoy is in danger of being bombed to...so i must wait for a retaliation. Today my entire air army( more than 450 planes between Bankok and Tavoy) stayed down, cause it need to get back to high morale and low fatigue levels. Something like 150 army bombers will begin, from tomorrow i guess, to bomb the AFs at Rangoon and the enemy positions at Reaghen. Here, as u will see in the screenshot, there's a strong enemy army with 2 big armoured units. I do not think my 33rd div and a mixed bde will hold the ground there, but, at the moment, i have no choice of moving back...my whole front could be broken if reaghen defensive line comes down...WHAT A MESS!!!!![:@]
In china...well in china you will see from the shot that i'll post-_-''
Terrible, just terrible...

Dont worry your not the only one, its happened to me aswell, although not on your scale.

My oppenent caught me flat footed in China, which i had taken very little interest in aparty from marching 6 divisions towards Yenen then Sian. And the same stuck in a bloody battle for Changsa.

So now hes counterattacked at Canton, Kaifeng and Hysinyang.

I pulled a lot of my garissions out of Port cities, and a division out of the Manchuko garrison, the reinforcements from the above has haulted the chinese attack at Kaifeng and we will counterattack soon and Canton is being held solely by the 104th Divison against great odds, and another Division is 60 miles out which should hold Canton for good. He took hsinyang as there where no combat troops there, but Wuhan is being reinforced b those 2 divisions that are stupidly on the road NW of Wuhan, so it should be held.

All in All the Chinese counterattack was limited, and it has cost them a lot more men than it has us, we should soon be pushing the Chinese out of Changsa also so my inital panic of,

"O NO THEYLL KICK US OUT OF CHINA AND INVAD SIAM AND SAIGON, THEN ATTACK THE MANCHUKO AND REDUCE IT ENOUGH OF ACTIVATE AND RUSSIA AND JAPAN WILL BE INVADED BY CHINSE AND RUSSIAN TROOPS IN 1943. Where mere panic.

Dont panic, get those troops back on the rail asap, and pull your troops up from the coastal cities, you can afford the supply loss.

I think you're attributing too much ability to the allies, 70,000 allies are far from as effective as 70,000 Japanese in 1941/42. Everything that starts in Burma can easily be held off by one of your divisions (as long as you don't let him surround you). If he's brought in the Karachi units, another division can hold them. The trick is not to let him sit and gain experience. Get a third division up and start attacking ASAP. Burma is very easy to cut off and isolate and he can potentially lose everything he's sent there. The Chinese will start arriving by March, so try to get an attack underway by mid February if you can. Don't let the Chinese link up before you attack him and you should be alright.

All I will say is "HOLY COW" after looking things over. Burma does not worry me too much, but China is a bugger bear.

Way too many split divisions scattered around. Way too many off road units. Time to buy some time to re-group.

Email on the way back to you Hoepner.

So you're saying it's not good to split divisions in regimets? does this change their combat effectiveness( i mean: does a DIV/A worths less than a single regiment not attached to a bigger unit?)

Thanks for supporting this poor japanese fan boy

Well, I am something of a organization nut. But IMO, yes the split units are not as effective as full divisions even when in the same hex. They seem to lose some of their punch, at least in my games.

Hurts my head to look at all them split units.[:D] Would drive me insane.

In my experience splitting units does not affect them unless the newly drawn leader is worse than the old leader. Of course I've had better leaders drawn as well. So simply upgrade poor leaders and splitting units has no detrimental effect.
